Two talented hairstylists were named as champions at the recent EOHCB Western Cape Championships. Mia Crous was the overall senior winner and Farazaanah Abrahams was the Stylistoftomoro winner. EOHCB interviewed both these winners – below is Mia’s interview, and Farazaanah’s will be published tomorrow! Full competition results and photos will follow soon! Mia Crous – 2018 EOHCB Western Cape Overall Winner Was the competition preparation difficult? Finding the right model is always a challenge. I entered 7 sections which was a lot. Planning around that closer to the competition, to colour the model's hair, what they should wear and to accommodate them to fit their and my work schedule was not easy. Where did you get your inspiration? My creative nature and hair complement each other. Daily trends and fashion, asking designer friends for upcoming fashion trends and starting with a mood board, my inspiration sets fire. Did you learn a lot through your experience in the competition? Yes….any competition is a learning experience. Never doubt yourself, as it was my first time I competed against experienced Senior Hairdressers. Do you have any tips for competitors in other competitions across SA? • Start with a mood board, eg. Nature, structures, patterns, architectural inspired, etc or latest fashion trends and colour. • Choice of model and availability is most important. • You have to think out of the box. • Stay focused and be calm on the floor and you must be able to improvise if things don’t go according to plan. • Practise and timing goes hand in hand. How long have you been in the industry? I started hairdressing in 2013 and qualified in November 2017. What do you enjoy most about being in the Hairdressing industry? Every client/model has a different facial shape, desired result and taste and I like that challenge. Is there anyone you would like to thank or mention? I would like to thank my parents for supporting me during the competition as well as Erina's Hair & Beauty for the opportunity to grow and develop my skill. With the closing date for the Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge on 31st May, there’s still time to enter. For those who are rushing to get entries in before deadline, here is a handy checklist to help ensure your entry is correct: 1. Use Goldwell’s Elemental collection as inspiration, creating your own style. 2. Choose your category – Global New Talent is for junior stylists with less than 5 years’ experience excluding apprenticeship by submission date. Global Creative Artist is for stylists with 5 years or more experience excluding the apprenticeship, by submission date. 3. To maximise your score, remember the judging critiera includes 40% of the marks for trend interpretation, 40% for technical execution, and 20% for the total look including make up, fashion, professionalism and aesthetics of the model and photography. 4. Read through the rules – they’re really important! Key rules include: • using Goldwell products only • no extensions, wigs or hairpieces may be used • photo should be full colour, head and shoulders or head and chest but not full length • please retouch sparingly • the model you use can be male or female but must be 19 years or older • only one entry per stylist, so make sure it’s fabulous! 5. Submit your entry according to the rules, with a detailed description of your colour technique and placement, and Goldwell products used. 6. Then hold thumbs... national winners will be announced in July 2018, and the Global Zoom finals in Toronto will be held on September 30 2018. Here’s some great advice from the 2016 international winners: “Showcase your creativity and your professional skills... impress the jury with your cutting, colouring and styling expertise” “The model is the representative of your style. He or she needs to have the perfect fit for your style. Choose your model wisely.” “Keep in mind as a national winner, you have 3 hours to recreate your look including colouring, cutting and styling. That’s a tight timeframe, so make sure it’s doable.” “An amazing overall look is the combination of everything... hair, make-up, fashion, styling. Your style needs all of these.” “Make sure the photo represents your work at its best. Concentrate on the look, the light, the model. When client Tamaryn tried to cut her hair at home, she thought it would work out – but after making a ponytail and chopping a big piece out of it, she ended up with a style that had many different lengths (as opposed to layers) and the ends started to split, which she then couldn’t fix. Luckily Jeauval Sanctuary, Somerset West, came to the rescue! Tamaryn was invited into this glamorous salon for the full experience, and after a consultation she bravely agreed to let go of her ends and allow Damian to cut them off! Blue Tit salon in Clapton, UK has launched its latest collection: Pure. Using favourite Instagram accounts as inspiration, the shoot was based on a very pure, pared-back feel.
