- Simon Forbes, Founder of Dome Hair Extensions, Passes Away
Contributed by Michael Conlin, South Africa SIMON FORBES … HIS DREAM BECAME A REALITY It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Simon Forbes. He passed away on Saturday the 9th May after a very long battle with cancer. Fortunately, he was not hospitalised until the last hours of his life. We send all our sympathy and condolences to his daughter, Lucy and son Callum. He was with Callum to his passing but unfortunately, Lucy is living in California and has not yet been able yet to return to London. We know that apart from his family and friends this news will leave many hairstylists across the globe very saddened. His influence spread to every continent in the world — rightly credited with his invention of hair extensions, nearly 40 years ago, which changed the face of hairdressing. Simon rose to fame in 1980 after opening the Antenna London salon in Kensington. It catered for the youth market and it was here where he applied his creative concepts and produced some of the most iconic images that define the decade. From females with shaved sides, to guys with sharp and strong looks, and, of course, his invention of Monofibre hair extensions. Antenna London was the heart of hair fashion and attracted clients and influencers of the generation from all over the globe, including the likes of Madonna, Boy George, Annie Lennox, Cher, Toyah Wilcox, to name a few. This influential clientele continued into the 21st century with celebs such as Peaches Geldof, Elle MacPherson and Cheryl Cole. Simon, along with his partner, Eleanor Donaldson, set up Dome — manufacturing, distributing and training hairstylists globally. Simon toured tirelessly, educating and amusing audiences, with his brilliant sense of humour combined with his forthright views. He went on to have a successful TV production company and the first viewing was that of The Hairdresser featuring Lee Stafford. The last years of his life were spent quietly fighting his illness but still involved with Dome. We are delighted that he lived long enough to see his latest development, Monofibre JNR Tape (not officially launched yet). This is a quick easy way to give clients Monofibre extensions without having to master the technique required to apply the Original Monofibre. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him, but also, so many others whose lives he touched with his game-changing creativity and intelligence. It was his desire that his creation of hair extensions became a staple service within the industry. The fourth accepted service. Without a doubt, his dream came true. You might also enjoy... - Major Professional Hair Industry Suppliers Offer United Plea for Reopening of Salons At Level 3
Supporting The EOHCB, Bargaining Council, UASA and SAAHSP In A Call for Safe Reopening at Level 3 FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. EBRAHIM PATEL, MINISTER OF TRADE, INDUSTRY AND COMPETITION 27 May 2020 Dear Minister Patel RE: Support for the re-opening of the salon industry in level 3 As key suppliers to the hairdressing industry in South Africa, we write this letter to you in support of the call by the collective grouping of: 1. The EOHCB (Employers Organisation for Hairdressing Cosmetology and Beauty) 2. Bargaining Council (for the Hairdressing. Cosmetology, Beauty & Skincare Industry) 3. UASA (United Association of South Africa), on behalf of the Hair & Beauty salon industry. 4. SAAHSP (South African association of Health & Skincare professionals) To permit the re-opening of salons - all key stakeholders in the industry, namely suppliers, salons and professional organisations are collectively advocating for the reopening of hairdressing salons at level 3 of the national lockdown. The salon industry is a large sector in South Africa with more than 21,000 establishments and a relatively dense territorial network (1 establishment per 2820 inhabitants) as well as thousands of workers. Salons welcome a million customers from across the country into their doors every day. Our industry, especially the informal sector provides employment for individuals who are sole breadwinners in their households. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hair maintenance has proved to be a major concern to South Africans, as evidenced by the numerous petitions and the media attention. A hair salon is a source of beauty for men and women, across all demographics. It is also a place, which allows them to regain their selfesteem and to feel good about themselves. We strongly believe that it is possible to operate salons in a responsible manner. Services provided will not only go a long way in uplifting our society’s mood; it will also save many small businesses, their employees and extended families, who have lost their incomes. Under strict conditions that support all the required COVID-19 preventative and hygiene measures, we believe that salons can be operational. We remain committed to supporting the Ministry and the profession with the safe re-opening up of hair salons. Our preventative activities will focus on: The provision of Protective Personal Equipment, sanitizers, gloves and face masks Clearly displayed safety measures and frequent disinfection Ensuring strict social distancing at all times Only permitting customers with pre-booked appointments into the salon Mandatory temperature checks and wearing of face masks for anyone entering the establishment Employee training and enforcing safe working procedures to protect both workers and clients. All work carried out will apply to both the formal and informal salons in the sector. Our reach as the local representatives of the largest global hairdressing brands, L’Oréal, Wella, Schwarzkopf, Goldwell, Moroccan Oil, Mizani and many more, enabled us to take guidance from the protocols and safe working practices implemented by the hairdressing industries in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany and Denmark who have successfully re-opened hair salons. We thank you for your support in this process and remain at your disposal for any further information. - Wella Professionals National TrendVision Awards Cancelled
Bon Jovi’s lyrics “ooh, living on a prayer” seem to summarise the collective feeling of our industry right now. COVID-19 has had many implications, and one of these is that Wella Professionals National TrendVision Awards (NTVA) 2020 is cancelled. NTVA is a prestigious competition on our local hairdressing calendar that allows our winners to move on to the International TrendVision Award Creative Retreat (ITVA). It gives them recognition from their peers and the global hairdressing community. Internationally, the competition will continue but will be entirely digitally driven. In South Africa, however, we want to give our stylists time to focus on their businesses. COVID-19 has been devasting to many salons, and this directly impacts our stylist’s ability to participate. The expectation on NTVA finalists’ creativity and excellence is tremendous, and the added pressure of reopening salons, gaining business, and recouping financial loss while competing, divides focus. Modern Hair & Beauty, who hosts the NTVA competition for Wella Professionals has decided to cancel the competition in favour of supporting our stylists during this tough time. We want our stylists to enter when their salons are thriving again; when they can focus on pushing their creative limits, bringing their unique vision to the NTVA stage. Flo Neacsu (Wella), Carla Klue (Sebastian), Fabio Macchia (SEBMAN), and Charles Junior Louw (Wella) will remain the winners of their respective categories and will attend ITVA in March 2021. Charles Junior Louw, who won the Global Gold award for Creative Artist, an incredible feat making the local industry incredibly proud, will represent South Africa on the global stage at ITVA and the 2021 Destination Event. Thankfully, and as if Bon Jovi knew, “oooh, we’re halfway there”! We look forward to seeing next year’s entries, to renewed creativity and hairdressing excellence. Stay safe. - Letter to Hairnews from Anny Britz, Images 1, Port Elizabeth
Life is about choices or so we hear, from when we are young and our parents advise us to always do what is right to when we grow older and utter the same words to our children. The narrow road as they say is narrow for a reason, not many people can join you in your walk, its winding and treacherous and more often than not you drag yourself along in the hope you made the right choice when you arrived at the cross road. Covid-19 brought about a crossroad for hairstylists and I have to keep reminding myself that everyone just does what they feel is right, but I am angry as I am sure we all are. I am angry that we can’t work, I am angry that our salons are closed, I am angry that a virus has turned our lives upside down, I am angry at the loss of life But mostly I am angry that as hairstylists we have allowed a virus to divide us, to break apart the sanctity of our trade. To allow some of us to be blinded by what we feel is adapt and change and in that minimize and discredit the years of experience, education, blood, sweat and tears we pour into our skill to perfect it. Call me a cynic, but I’m holding on to my skills, my secret colour recipes, my special foil placement techniques, my colour applications that adapt with each client to ensure I give them each exactly what they need. Has Covid-19 changed the world, Yes Of Course it has but it has not changed the pride with which I say “My name is Anny Britz and I am a hairdresser”, it has not been easy, my hands are not your hands and no I will not share my trade secrets with you, because you have not walked along side me, you have sat in my chair and honoured me by allowing me the freedom to create the best “you” that you ever wished to be. Don’t make a mockery of our trade, stand firm, stand proud and ask your clients to wait for you. You are worth it. Images 1 Facebook | Instagram You might also enjoy... - EOHCB Update: Seeking Level 3 Clarification from Government
An update from the EOHCB, along with the presentation and video which was jointly submitted to Government on behalf of EOHCB, Bargaining Council and UASA. Dear EOHCB Member and Industry, The EOHCB awaits a copy of the Government Gazette outlining the level 3 regulations of the Disaster Management Act. Just like our members and the industry, we also seek clarity concerning the restrictions pertaining to the personal care sector during level 3 of the lockdown, in relation to social distancing. In the submission made to Government (COVID-19 Command Commission), the parties and the council outlined the protocols of social distancing within the workplace for the industry and displayed it to be aligned with the current health, hygiene, and safety protocols required by the commission. As soon as the regulations for alert level 3 have been published, the EOHCB will provide our members and the industry with clarity about the regulations and the necessary steps/actions to be taken within the workplace to resume operations within the permitted alert level for the personal care sector. Please click on the link to access the agreement entered into between the EOHCB and UASA The Union through the council, which was submitted to the commission along with the visual display of the industry’s health, hygiene and safety protocols. - Hair and Beauty Industry Seeks Urgent Clarification on Level 3 Regulations
After the President’s speech last night, many hair and beauty salons were left feeling confused and disappointed. The draft regulations for Lockdown Level 3 stated that hairdressing and beauty would be allowed to open only if 1.5 metre social distancing between customers was complied with. The Presidential Twitter account published at the time of the speech, stated the same. However, the President’s speech did not make mention of the social distancing regulation and simply stated that hairdressing was not permitted. The industry organizations are urgently seeking clarification on this from Government and a copy of the gazetted rules which will provide full detail. There may be two reasons for hair and beauty services being excluded in the speech: 1.There was a last minute change made to the Draft regulations and Government decided to exclude hairdressing and beauty after all. 2.The speech writer made an error in interpreting the clause “Personal care services, including hairdressing, beauty treatments, make-up and nail salons and piercing and tattoo parlours, where adequate social distance of at least one and a half meters between customers is not possible.” As it is set out under Economic Exclusions, and is confusingly worded, it could have been a simple error in comprehending what the paragraph really meant. Hairnews urges the industry to please: Be Patient – the industry organisations are are seeking the correct facts asap. Once these facts are available and confirmed, they will be communicated asap. Don’t Make Decisions Yet – please hold off on cancelling lease agreements or any other decision regarding your business, until the Level 3 regulations are fully understood and finalised, and any additional negotiation and engagement has occurred. If this is taking place you will be informed asap. Be Positive – now is not the time to “vent” on social media even though it is an incredibly frustrating and confusing situation! Your clients need you to be calm and positive. Vent in private, not in public. Don’t Advertise Illegal Services – Please do not advertise on social media that you are doing, or intend to do, any services which are illegal during current lockdown laws. Social media is forever and publishing this can have lasting negative consequences for you and your business. You might also enjoy...
