This ensures that every business operating from the premises is compliant and correctly registered, providing peace of mind for all parties as well as clients! Please contact the Bargaining Council for any assistance in this regard. www.hcsbc.co.za Contracts and Agreements A chair rental agreement is only as good as the contract that governs it! A proper contract will protect all parties and ensure peace of mind and a harmonious working relationship. As part of the EOHCB membership, assistance with contracts is offered – please contact them for more info and assistance. www.eohcb.co.za Rental vs Employment There are many salons at this time offering two options: chair rental, or to be employed by the salon. If you prefer to work as an employee then please get in touch with the salon and discuss whether this is an option.

  • Hairnews 2021 New Year Message

What a year it has been! Who would have thought when we welcomed 2020 in, that it would overturn our lives in so many ways, bringing the toughest, most testing year for everyone in the hairdressing industry. We are full of admiration for every single person who has remained resilient, positive, and kept doing their utmost in very difficult circumstances that have often meant hard changes. We feel for every salon owner who has been forced to close or downsize their beloved business. We hope that you will be able to reinvent yourself and rebuild in the coming year and that better times lie ahead. Thank you to every single salon and hairstylist who has embraced the need for safety, sanitisation and mask wearing, doing your bit to control the spread of the pandemic and get things back to normal faster. Thank you to the EOHCB and Bargaining Council for your ongoing communication with government and the industry, allowing us to stay open after the initial level 4 and 5 closure. 2021 is going to be a challenging year, there is no doubt about it, but we know that our amazing industry will regroup and grow, while adapting to the new reality that we find ourselves in. Wishing everyone a safe, healthy and successful 2021. From the Hairnews Team

  • Salons Take Covid Seriously: Shelene Shaer, Prashen Chetty & Baylee Strike Speak Out

With cases surging, three leading hairstylists – Shelene Shaer of Tanaz, Prashen Chetty of Silver Clippers Hair and Beauty Salon, and Baylee Strike of BStriking Hair Design, explain how they have stayed away from work and even closed their doors, in order to help manage their own safety and the safety of their clients, during the pandemic. Baylee Strike Baylee Strike of BStriking Hair Design, Durban, explained on social media: “So as you all know and if you don’t know yet... I am a high risk patient. I opened Bstriking because I need a safe environment to work from - and with the rise in cases on a daily basis and the presidential speech last night, we have decided to extend our holiday till the 15th of Jan 2021 to help curb the infections and keep our staff and clients safe. This does NOT MEAN I am closing my salon - it means I am taking an extra holiday and isolating during this time. By doing this I am hopefully saving my clients’ lives and myself. Thank you so much for the support and if there is anything needed please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Baylee - BSTRIKING HAIR DESIGN 074 822 5624.” Prashen Chetty “The reason I closed Silver Clippers for two weeks, was there were a lot of clients coming in with family members who tested positive for Covid-19, and I did not want to chance anything. I rather made the decision to close for a time. With so many people coming to Durban for the holidays there was always going to be a surge, and I also had a premonition that tighter lockdown restrictions were coming” Prashen explains. Shelene Shaer Speaking from self-isolation due to quarantine, Shelene Shaer of Tanaz explains: We have a responsibility with the people we work and to the industry. I am shocked at how many people disrespect this disease – whether you believe in it or not is irrelevant. This is not an “I” but a “we” situation, at no point can we think only about ourselves. The next two weeks are going to be very concerning. When people come back from holiday we are going to have a ton of positive people who might not even know they are sick. Rules and regulations must be followed more than ever. I had a client last week whose hair I have been doing for a very long time. This client was keen to remove their mask during the service but I insisted it must say on. That is the problem with long term clients and the familiarity in the relationship – people know each other and feel comfortable with each other – I got a call from this client two days later to say they had just tested positive for Covid and were very grateful that we had followed all the rules. In this pandemic, we can look for the negative or the positive, and there is a lot of positive. Most importantly, although business has got slower, it has got stronger. The clients that we are seeing are getting superb, one on one service, and I have actually startedto ot get referrals based on this. Improved customer service is something we keep speaking about over the years and this has forced us to do what we have always been meaning to! I have been following a lot of international hairdressers and you don’t feel so isolated and angry with your own government or community when you are reminded it is a global challenge. It has alleviated my stress to keep up with what people are experiencing internationally and to see the bigger picture.

  • Adjusted Alert Level 3: EOHCB Confirms Protocols and Opening

Dear EOHCB Member, As per the president’s address last night, Monday, December 28, 2020, South Africa has moved from lockdown level 1 to adjusted level 3 as of midnight. The EOHCB awaits the publication of the updated adjusted alert level 3 gazette and will provide members with comprehensive advice as soon as its available, but as we interpreted the address, the personal care sector (Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare industry) has not been affected by this change in alert level as all businesses are allowed to continue with operations as long as all relevant health protocols and social distancing measures are adhered to. Night clubs remain close and businesses engaged in the sale and transportation of liquor will not be allowed to operate for the next 14 days or until such time that the regulations have been reviewed. Whether permits to travel to and from work will be required during adjusted alert level 3, is still unknown to the EOHCB as we await directive from Government. Our industry remains in operation and the current personal care sector-specific regulations as published and gazetted, 19 June 2020 remains in place and must be adhered to. A significant change in the risk level adjustment to alert level 3 is that; every South African is now responsible to ensure compliance with regards to the wearing of face masks in public places, and no longer does the onus lie only with employers and or business owners but every citizen of the Republic of South Africa. Employers/Business owners must continue to ensure that every employee or member of the public when entering the workplace: Wears a face mask covering both the nose and mouth at all times; Social distancing of 1.5 metres is kept and or physical barriers are present; Hands are sanitised before entering and leaving the workplace; COVID-19 contact tracing and symptom screening is conducted and recorded before an individual enters the working environment; An employee or member of the public who presents or experiences any COVID-19 symptoms or flu like symptoms to remain at home or return home and self-isolate for at least 10 days and seek medical attention; Only clients being serviced may be inside the workplace and no visitors should be allowed; Employers/Business owners are to determine the floor space of their premises and calculate the allowable number of individuals inside the workplace per 1.5 square metres. The national curfew has been extended to 21h00 – 06h00. All citizens must be confined to their place of residence during these hours. Kind Regards, The EOHCB Team For more information please contact your local EOHCB office or representative – you can find your local agent or office HERE. • EOHCB Urges Salons to Keep Covid Protocols In Place

Given the recent surge in cases, this is an urgent reminder from EOHCB of how salons can reduce their risk in the festive season and beyond. No salon wants to be subject to another lockdown, but if we all play our part in helping control the virus and be responsible at all times, we can help ensure that our industry remains open. What practical measures should an employer implement to mitigate the risk of an COVID-19 outbreak in the workplace during and after the festive season? • Send communication to all employees encouraging them to adhere to all health and safety protocols outside the working environment for the duration of the festive season. • Remind employees throughout the festive season of the mandatory health and safety measures as required by government. • Require of all employees who will be visiting hotspots as declared and published in the regulations during the festive season, to disclose such visitations to the employer or the human resources department or the COVID-19 compliance officer ahead of the commencement of annual leave. • Ensure that all employees returning from annual leave after traveling to a hotspot area, provide either a negative COVID-19 test or observe the mandatory 10-day self-quarantining. Remember that an employee who can work from home during the 10-day period, must work from home and be remunerated for such work performed. • Encourage all employees who display any symptoms of COVID-19 to remain at home and in serious cases, to submit themselves for testing. • Maintain strict COVID-19 screening protocols and adhere to contact tracing requirements. The same should apply to members of the public. If a client is displaying any symptoms or upon screening the client to enter the working environment and symptoms are experienced, rather reschedule the appointment to mitigate any possible exposure in the workplace before the client even enter the establishment. Best to conduct all screenings outside if possible and remember that visitors are still prohibited and clients should be attended to through a booking system and wait outside the working environment before entering to be serviced. This is to avoid any congestion in a waiting area. All the personal care sector-specific protocols must be observed at all times. Ensure that all health and safety measures are strictly adhered to, as many employees or members of the public may be asymptomatic. For more information please contact your local EOHCB office or representative – you can find your local agent or office HERE. www.eohcb.co.za

  • “Get the Look” How To from Nestor Sanchez, HOB Academy, UK

A fabulous step by step illustrating how to achieve this edgy “snapshot image” style from Nestor Sanchez from HOB Academy, who won the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Snapshot Image of the Year. Cut by Nestor Sanchez at HOB Academy, London Colour: Chris May and Warren Boodaghian Photo: Jake Unger CUT 1 Divide the front and back of the head by taking a section that travels from the crown to behind each ear. Then split the back area with a vertical section into two equal sides and finally decide the angle of the desired weight line as this will dictate the shape of your sectioning pattern. 2 Now using your fingers, elevate each section gradually to create a classic graduated shape with a seamless build up of weight. Once the back is completed, refine and create an outline that is sympathetic and works in harmony with the neutral growth patterns. 3 To connect the sides, overdirect the hair to the last section from the back using the previous angle and elevation. Tap the ear to release some of the tension and avoid the dreaded hole in your shape caused by the protrusion of the ear. 4 Once the internal shape has been completed, working from the back continue your outline all the way to the front, making sure that whatever shape you are creating, complements and enhances the bob structure and facial features. In this case, a curved/triangular line was created to show off the model’s neck and make the lips the focal point. 5 The fringe was cut using pivoting sections from a middle parting. A round layer was used to create a juxtaposing effect of strong outlines with a dishevelled fringe. 6 Finally, the hair was prepped with oil, conditioning spray and a wrap-drying technique using a Vess brush. Irons were used to give the hair shine and that winning photo finish. COLOUR 1 This colour technique is approached by creating two areas of the head. Start by isolating section A, work an inch into the hairline at the fringe area creating a curved section that sits underneath the occipital bone. 2 This creates section B (top) and section A (bottom) 3 Start by lightening the ends of section B using Wella Professionals Blondor Crème with 4%, processing until achieving a result that is two levels lighter than section A. 4 Rinse and remove the lightener following manufacturers guidelines. 5 On damp hair resection the hair back into A and B. 6 Section B is recoloured with a deep magenta shade using Color Touch by Wella Professionals 20g 55/65 + 10g 10/6 + 2g 0/68 + 64mls 1.9% Color Touch Emulsion 7 Section A is recoloured with a black grape shade using Color Touch 20g 33/66 + 3g 0/68 + 46 mls 4% Color Touch Emulsion 8 The colour has then amplified by using High Magenta from Color Fresh Create mixed with conditioner.
