  • Train With London Wellness Academy and Boost Your CV

Embarking on a career at sea is the adventure of a lifetime, but what happens after you complete your nine-month contract on board ship? Here are some career options that are available to you. We take a look at the life skills and career skills that are gained when working on board a cruise ship, and how this enhances your CV and prospects for the future, and how the experience can supercharge your career as a professional.   What are the biggest benefits of doing a cruise ship contract?   It’s the most rewarding way to travel the world and earning money. With a huge amount of self-discipline and entrepreneurial skills developed while gaining experience working on international waters with a diverse clientele of multiple of nationalities that takes you out of your comfort zone and teaches you people skills that you will just not experience in a spa on land at home.   How will London Wellness Academy training help your future career?   The training is strict and professional. You are trained to look and act professionally at all times, while the independent working environment builds your confidence and business acumen. Your business experience receives a broad range of training not only in running a business with specific column management, but you get to perform an array of many different services.    In a land-based, fixed location spa or salon, treatments can be more repetitive, with less of a range in different services. Because at the academy they are trained in the tailor-made treatments, products and procedures used in the spas onboard that set us apart. An important factor in the quality we train for is striving to provide guests with the same quality treatments in any of our spas on any of our cruise ships. Personal Business Skills Development Being confident and comfortable with achieving targets plus having the ability to be adaptive in all scenarios is fundamental in team building and in your own success in the business! In an onboard experience, you work in a 5-star spa, needing to deliver 5-star quality every day, with a far more intensive, inspiring atmosphere. On land, you can set your own pace, but onboard it’s a fast-paced, challenging work environment. You need to be flexible, energetic, and positive.  You gain so much experience and become goal-driven and expectations become higher, encouraging you to always strive for more. When employers see on your CV that you have worked onboard, they know that you are used to working under pressure of time and quality of services, that your personal skills and etiquette in dealing with guests is of the highest calibre. What sets our staff aside is a sense of providing the best quality at all times. Career Options Available once you’ve accomplished your First Contract Onboard! • Renew Your Contract Many hairstylists find that they love the experience so much that they sign up for another contract, and often end up doing three or more. The advantage of this is you have a choice of ships after your first contract, and can start to plan your worldwide travels to include all the destinations you long to see. The more time you spend working on board, the more you will earn tax-free with all expenses paid, and the bigger your nest egg of savings will eventually be. • Becoming a Cruise Ship Spa Manager Yourself If you are keen to advance in your career on board ship, and you love the challenge of managing a team, then once you have gained sufficient experience, you can progress to managing an onboard spa. • Landing Your Dream Salon Job – At Home or Abroad! London Wellness Academy-trained staff are highly sought after, and top salon owners all over the world know what calibre of person they are and also the skills and work ethic that they possess. As a result, you can apply for a job at your dream salon, or in a related field such as an educator or technician, with a far greater chance of being accepted because your contract on board is a CV highlight that sets you apart and is internationally recognised.   • Opening Your Own Salon If you decide to open your own salon after you complete your contract, you will have a nest egg of savings to invest in your venture and your skills, independence, retail experience, and work ethic will give you a great advantage in the world of business ownership.  • Welcomed Back as an Incredible Asset to your Former Salon with a Whole New Business Skillset! More and more salon owners are supporting their staff in the decision to take a “gap year” and work on board, and are keeping their job open and welcoming them back into the salon after their contract. This is a win-win, as the salon benefits from your upgraded skills and expertise, and you are able to resume your career and continue building your clientele – while your incredible experience on board will also have prepared you for a salon manager, or art team, role. Your career options after your contract are literally whatever you choose! Completing a cruise ship contract superpowers your career, opens doors and brings new opportunities to your dream job. It’s the adventure of a lifetime, offering experiences that you will remember forever and is a huge asset to your CV that is respected by top salons worldwide. • Style Inspiration: Frequency by Shelley Lane

Every movement produces a sound, and every sound resonates with a FREQUENCY . The intricate designs in this collection draw inspiration from the fluid and dynamic nature of sound waves. As depicted in the images, each style encapsulates the essence of frequency, translating its vibrations into unique sculptural forms. The meticulously crafted curves and lines in the hair echo the patterns of sound waves, while ornamental details infuse a futuristic and ethereal quality.   FREQUENCY  delves into the interplay of light and shadow to amplify the visual drama of each look. Light backgrounds enhance the richness of dark tones and shimmering highlights in the hair, creating a striking contrast that mirrors the balance between high and low frequencies.   This collection is not merely a celebration of frequencies and their inherent connection to movement but also a profound artistic exploration of contrast and rhythm. Each sculpted style offers a distinctive interpretation of sound, where visual design harmonizes with the emotional resonance of vibration. • EOHCB: Digital Marketing for The Hairdressing, Cosmetology, and Beauty Industry - Essentials Skills Development for Business Owners

In today’s competitive beauty industry, mastering digital marketing is no longer optional—it’s essential. Whether you’re a salon owner, cosmetologist, or hairstylist, building a strong online presence can significantly boost your business by attracting new clients, enhancing customer loyalty, and keeping you relevant in an ever-evolving industry. Why Digital Marketing is Crucial for Salon Owners   The beauty industry thrives on visual appeal, personal connections, and trust—all elements that can be effectively communicated through digital platforms. From showcasing your work to engaging with potential clients, digital marketing provides salon owners with the tools to: Reach a broader audience through social media and search engines. Build trust and credibility by showcasing customer testimonials and before-and-after transformations. Establish consistent communication with clients through email marketing and social media. Promote services and products online, reaching potential clients who are searching for beauty-related services. With the right digital marketing strategies, salon owners can increase bookings, sell products online, and grow their client base. Below are key digital marketing skills every salon owner should develop.   1. Social Media Mastery The beauty industry is inherently visual, making social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube essential for salon marketing. Here's how you can leverage these platforms: Instagram & TikTok:  Focus on creating high-quality photos and videos showcasing your work. Before-and-after transformations, client makeovers, and tutorial videos tend to perform exceptionally well on these platforms. User-Generated Content:  Encourage your staff and clients to tag your salon in their posts or share their own beauty transformations. This not only builds social proof but also promotes your salon to their followers/friends. Hashtags and Trends:  Stay updated with trending beauty topics and hashtags to reach a broader audience. Engage with your followers through comments and direct messages to build relationships. 2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) SEO ensures that your salon appears in local search results when potential clients are looking for services you offer. If someone searches "hair salon near me," local SEO can make sure your salon is visible in the top results. Google Your Business:  Ensure your salon’s profile is up-to-date with accurate information, such as your address, operating hours, and phone number. Encourage satisfied clients to leave reviews to improve your local search rankings. Website Optimization:  Incorporate relevant keywords related to your services (e.g., “bridal hairstylist,” “skincare treatments”) across your website content, including blog posts, service descriptions, and meta tags. 3. Content Creation and Marketing Content marketing is a powerful way to build your brand and showcase your expertise in hairdressing and cosmetology. Regularly posting relevant content helps you stay top-of-mind and positions your salon as a thought leader in the industry. Video Tutorials:  Share hairstyling, makeup, or skincare tutorials on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or your blog. This helps potential clients see your expertise and engage with your content. Blogging:  Create articles on trending beauty topics, product recommendations, and salon updates. Blog posts can boost your website’s SEO and provide valuable content that keeps your audience informed. 4. Paid Advertising (PPC) Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is a cost-effective way to get your salon noticed. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram allow you to target specific demographics and promote your services to a highly relevant audience. Targeted Ads:  Use Facebook and Instagram ads to promote special offers, seasonal promotions, or new services. By targeting specific geographic locations, age groups, or beauty interests, you can ensure that your ads reach potential clients in your area. 5. Email Marketing Email marketing allows you to communicate directly with your clients and maintain relationships with them even when they’re not in the salon. A well-planned email marketing strategy can drive repeat business, promote new services, and increase product sales. Loyalty Programs:  Send exclusive offers, promotions, and discounts to your regular clients to encourage repeat visits. Appointment Reminders:  Automate reminders for clients to book their next appointments. You can also send follow-up emails after appointments asking for feedback or reviews. Seasonal Offers:  Use email marketing to promote special offers tied to seasonal trends, such as holiday discounts, back-to-school haircuts, or bridal packages. 6. Online Reputation Management Online reviews and testimonials are crucial in the beauty industry. Clients often rely on reviews to decide which salon to visit, so maintaining a positive online reputation is essential. Encourage Reviews:  After providing exceptional service, ask clients to leave a review on Google or Facebook. Positive reviews improve your online reputation and can boost local SEO. Respond to Feedback:  Engage with both positive and negative reviews. A thoughtful response to negative feedback can turn a dissatisfied client into a loyal customer and show potential clients that you care about their experience. 7. Influencer and Affiliate Marketing The beauty industry has a strong influencer presence, and working with local influencers can boost your salon’s visibility. By partnering with influencers who align with your brand, you can reach new clients and build credibility. Influencer Collaborations:  Offer complimentary services to local beauty influencers in exchange for a review or feature on their social media platforms. Choose influencers whose audience aligns with your target market. Affiliate Programs:  Implement affiliate marketing by offering influencers a commission for clients they refer to your salon. 8. Client Relationship Management (CRM) Tools CRM tools help you organise client information, track appointments, and manage marketing campaigns more efficiently. They are particularly useful for maintaining personalised communication with clients and keeping them engaged. Client Databases:  Store information about clients’ preferences, past services, and contact details. Use this information to send personalised promotions or reminders. Appointment Reminders and Loyalty Programs:  Many CRM tools allow you to automate appointment reminders and loyalty program rewards, making it easier to encourage repeat business. 9. E-commerce for Salon Products If you offer beauty products in your salon, consider setting up an online store. This allows clients to purchase products directly from you even after they leave the salon. Instagram and Facebook Shops:  Create online stores through these platforms to sell your products directly to your followers. Link these shops to your website for easy access. Product Promotions:  Run exclusive online promotions to incentivise clients to purchase products. For example, offer free shipping or discounts on their first order. Digital marketing is a powerful tool for salon owners in the hairdressing, cosmetology, and beauty industry. By developing skills in social media marketing, SEO, email marketing, and paid advertising, you can increase your salon’s visibility, attract more clients, and grow your business. Staying informed on digital marketing trends and regularly assessing your strategies will help to ensure the long-term success of your business. • My Salon Software Business Insight: Implications of the Vat Increase

Implications of the Vat increase from 15 - 15.5% on 01 May 2025.   From 01 May 2025 you will be paying an extra 0.5 % Vat on everything you pay to run your business. In addition, your clients will be expected to pay an extra 0.5% for the services and products they buy from you.   The increased cost of the 0.5% is easy to adjust. For those salons and spas using My Salon Software the changeover in the calculation on your costs will be done by us, by increasing the Vat value on your system.   As the salon owner you have the option of keeping your charges to your clients as they are and absorbing the 0.5% in reduced profit or adjusting your selling prices to collect the extra 0.5% Vat.    On your retail products the suppliers will probably provide you with updated price lists reflecting your new cost prices for both professional and retail products including suggested selling prices.    As pointed out by long-time client Stephanie Teal, owner of Red Lipstick in Cape Town this could present an administrative nightmare.   For example, for a service that currently cost your clients R300.00 at the current Vat of 15% you would now need to charge clients R301.30 after the increase. Considering that all changes in both cost and recommended selling prices have to be done manually, line by line, this could provide a challenge… or maybe it actually presents an opportunity.   It has always been best practice to 'round up' prices to avoid having to keep a lot of change in your till. For example, when a product has a recommended selling price of R113 round up to R115 or even R120  -  always to the nearest R5 or R10. Never price this to includes cents e.g. R159.95, round up to R160.00   In these times it is even better to have a 'price adjustment' due to the change in Vat of R20, R50 or R100 on your services knowing that this increase will absorb the increase in Vat at the same time not forcing you to start handling small change. Clients are aware of the increase in Vat and will accept a small 'price adjustment' just to keep things simple. For the sake of correct messaging for youe clients refer to this increase as a PRICE ADJUSTMENT  and not a PRICE INCREASE. • EOHCB: Unlock Business Success – Empower Your Team with Skills Development

Understanding the Differences Between Short Skills Development and Learnership Programmes in the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry: A Guide for Employers In the competitive hairdressing and beauty industry, staying ahead of trends and maintaining high service standards is crucial. For employers, investing in staff development through training is key to achieving these goals. Two primary avenues for enhancing employee skills are short skills development courses and occupational learnership programmes. Understanding the differences between these options and selecting the right one can significantly impact your business's success.   Short Courses: Quick and Flexible Skill Enhancement Duration and Focus:  Short courses are brief, typically lasting from a few days to a few weeks, focusing on specific skills or knowledge areas, such as advanced hair-cutting techniques or specialised beauty treatments. They are ideal for addressing immediate training needs or filling specific skill gaps within your team. Flexibility:  One of the main advantages of short courses is their flexibility. Employers can choose courses that align with current business needs or employee interests, ensuring that the training is relevant and immediately applicable. These courses can be delivered online, in person, or through a combination of both. Certification:  Participants receive a certificate of completion, which enhances employability and provides a mark of professional development. While this certification may not equate to a formal qualification, it still adds value by demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained.   Benefits for Employers: Quick Skill Enhancement:  Short courses allow for the rapid up-skilling of staff, leading to immediate improvements in service quality and customer satisfaction. Cost-Effective:  These courses are generally less expensive and require less time away from work, making them a cost-effective way to enhance employee skills without disrupting business operations. Employee Motivation:  Offering short courses can boost morale and motivation, as employees feel valued and supported in their professional development.   Learnership Programmes: Comprehensive and Structured Training Duration and Structure:  Learnership programmes are more extensive, typically lasting between 12 and 24 months. Unlike short courses, learnerships combine theoretical learning with practical, on-the-job training. This holistic approach ensures that employees gain a deep understanding of their occupation, from foundational knowledge to advanced skills.   Qualification:  Successful completion of a learnership leads to a nationally recognised qualification registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). This not only enhances the employee’s professional standing but also adds credibility to your business.   Benefits for Employers: Comprehensive Training:  Learnerships provide thorough training that covers both theory and practice, ensuring employees are well-rounded and highly skilled. Formal Qualifications:  The qualifications gained through learnerships are nationally recognised, which can elevate the reputation of your business and build trust with clients. Retention and Loyalty:  Investing in a learnership programme can increase employee retention and loyalty, demonstrating your commitment to their long-term development. Incentives and Grants:  Employers participating in learnership programmes may be eligible for financial incentives and grants from Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), which can offset training costs.   Choosing the Right Training Programme: 1. Assess Business Needs and Goals:  Identify specific areas where your team needs improvement. This will help you decide whether short courses or learnerships are more appropriate. Set objectives, such as improving customer satisfaction, increasing service offerings, or enhancing employee retention.   2. Consult with Industry Bodies and Authorities:  Engage with the QCTO to understand the accreditation process and the standards required for occupational qualifications. The QCTO provides a database of accredited skills programmes, which includes details about various providers, particularly for the hairdressing and beauty industry. You can explore the QCTO Skills Programmes page  for more information.   3. Explore Training Providers:  Look for accredited training providers that offer short courses and learnerships in hairdressing and beauty. Seek recommendations from industry associations or peers who have successfully implemented training programmes.   4. Apply for Funding and Incentives:  Utilise the skills development levies you pay to access funding for training programmes through the Services SETA. Apply for grants and incentives offered by SETAs to support the cost of learnership programmes.   Making Informed Decisions for Business Growth Both short skills development courses and occupational learnership programmes offer valuable opportunities to elevate your team’s capabilities and enhance your business’s success. By carefully assessing your business needs, consulting with industry bodies, and exploring available options, you can choose the training path that best supports your business’s growth and your employees’ professional development in the competitive hairdressing and beauty industry.
