    Cosmetic regulations in South Africa. We all know that the cosmetics industry plays a significant role in our daily lives, offering a wide array of products for personal care and grooming. However, the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of cosmetics are subject to strict governing regulations to ensure consumer safety and product quality. In South Africa, the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of cosmetics are set forth under the Medicines and Related Substances Act (Act 101 of 1965) and the Regulations Relating to the Labelling, Advertising, and Composition of Cosmetics (GN R. 429 of 22 December 2017). These regulations are designed to ensure consumer safety, product quality, and fair-trade practices within the cosmetics industry. Compliance in the Hair & beauty industry is essential for ensuring safety, health, and consumer protection while maintaining high professional standards Understanding Cosmetics Cosmetics encompass a diverse range of products intended for personal care, hygiene, and grooming. This includes skincare items (lotions, creams, anti-wrinkle creams, serums, shaving products) and haircare products (shampoos, conditioners, and hair dyes) as well as oral hygiene products (toothpaste and mouthwash). Additionally, cosmetics extend to fragrances, deodorants, makeup items, and sun protection products. It is important to note that substances intended for ingestion, inhalation, injection, or implantation into the human body are not classified as cosmetics.   Safety Standards and Compliance The Regulations mandate that cosmetics must not pose any risk to human health when used under normal or foreseeable conditions. To ensure compliance, the responsible person/s, typically manufacturers or importers, are required to conduct thorough safety assessments of both finished products and individual ingredients. These assessments must adhere to qualitative and quantitative composition standards, taking into consideration, factors such as product composition, microbiological quality, toxicity profiles, and potential adverse effects. Maintaining Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and keeping a product information file for each cosmetic for at least ten years is a clear requirement in the industry. Product Claims and Advertising Cosmetic advertising must adhere to strict guidelines to prevent misleading or false claims that may misinform the consumer (Regulation 9, set out in the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972). The regulation prohibits claims that imply characteristics, effects, or qualities that a product does not possess unless scientifically substantiated. Terms like “clinically proven” or “recommended by doctors” require rigorous evidence to support their use and are strictly regulated. Furthermore, advertising must not convey the impression of medicinal properties or promote unsafe practices. Post-marketing Surveillance A robust system for post-marketing surveillance is essential to monitor and address any undesirable or serious adverse effects associated with cosmetic use. Responsible persons must promptly investigate and record such events, taking corrective action as necessary. Penalties for Non-Compliance Failure to comply with cosmetic regulations can result in significant penalties, as outlined in Regulation 12 of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act of South Africa. Offenders may face fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the severity and recurrence of the offense.   Additionally, responsible persons may be held liable for the cost of destroying non-compliant products, further incentivising adherence to regulatory standards. When it comes to choosing a hairstyle, knowing what works for your clients face shape will help them look their best. Here are my top tips when it comes to choosing!   Round - round faces often lack definition, adding sharpness and dimension with the hair will help elevate the look. Opting for haircuts with more length on the top will help elongate your clients face and help add some volume. Quiffs  are a great option, as well as a side parting with the hair parted to one side of the head it instantly adds length to the face.   Diamond  - diamond faces are a little wider at the sides and narrower at the chin, so adding some roundness will make the face appear a lot more oval. With this face shape, you want to add a little bit of height but not too much. The textured crop  is a great style for this face shape. Adding texture on the top gives much more dimension to the hair, therefore looking fuller without elongating the face. Heart  - people with heart shaped faces often have a natural widows peak. Therefore, slicking the hair back will only accentuate this more. Keep the hair light and airy will embrace texture and work best for this shape. With the cheeks being wider, keeping it shorter at the sides will help keep the face looking narrow with more height on the top. I also advise sporting a light stubble with this face shape, nothing too wild that will emphasise the chin.   Oblong - oblong faces often have stronger jawlines than others, making their faces extremely symmetrical. A buzz cut is great for anyone with an oblong face, little length on the top and softness helps create a more rounded look to the face. Having equal length on both the sides and the tops helps balance this out well. Goatee beards work amazingly for this face shape, as a full beard will only widen out the jaw.   Triangle - this face shape is extremely sharp, so using the hair to soften the features works well. Longer hair looks amazing, as well as, adding a fringe helping to de-emphasise the chin and jaw.
