  • Styles: Polaris by Christian Rios

Polaris by Christian Ríos is a collection inspired by the northern lights, that gives prominence to soft and harmonious colours, which at the same time are strong and eye-catching, with feathering and soft finishes. His work transmits the force of nature and its coldness, and explores how different effects of light influence us. The collection features a cold image, with pale skin, make-up with a “gloss” touch, and changing clothes with gel inside that give a futuristic feel. An editorial result that gives importance to fashion, both in the images in general as in the clothes, and in which hair recreates a new presence thanks to its shapes and colour. • Clicks Advert Withdrawn After Outcry

A recent advert from Clicks, depicting Afro hair types as problematic and only Caucasian hair as “normal”, was removed and Clicks issued an apology after the advert caused an outcry. Hairnews is glad that this advert was removed as it is wrong, and insulting to the many beautiful and healthy heads of well maintained Afro hair, to imply that this hair type can only be problematic. We hope that Clicks learns from this and that any such advert in the future shows that all hair types can be maintained optimally. Better still, we hope that clients are encouraged to purchase their products through salons, no matter whether their hair is curly or straight, in order to get the very best advice, and the highest quality of care products so that everyone’s crowning glory looks and feels not just “normal” but “wonderful!” Support Salons – Purchase Professional, from the professionals!

  • The Role of Hairnews in the Industry

A quick “refresher course” for those who would like to learn more about the role Hairnews plays in the industry and how the company works: Hairnews was previously the SA Hairdressers Journal, a print publication. Three years ago the magazine changed to an online format and also changed ownership. Previously owned by Carol-Ann Jamison of Trade Focus Publications, today Hairnews is owned by Jassy Mackenzie of Ukufunda Publishing. It is one of the few publications that has always been privately and independently owned. The Hairnews team is proudly South African. We are all South African citizens residing in this country who are passionate about making a positive contribution towards our country and our industry and committed to being part of a better future here for all. As a “trade” publication, Hairnews specialises in the hairdressing industry, with articles on new products, services, trends, industry personalities, business advice, and industry updates, as well as articles of interest on related topics such as beauty and nails. We do not publish content that reflects negatively on the industry as we are aware that information online is also available and viewable by consumers, who deserve to see the industry in its best light! As a “trade” publication we are aware of the importance of having a compliant, structured industry and we support this. We communicate frequently with the industry organisations and publish content that helps readers understand the complex legal and governmental processes that they, and the industry, have to comply with, as well as the benefits that they offer to salons. Because different people prefer different platforms, our content is available on our website, via our e-newsletters, and on social media where we share and boost sponsored posts. We welcome feedback from readers, and if any reader has problems or issues with a supplier or organisation, we will step in and try to facilitate communication so that the problems can be solved. You are welcome to email info@hairnews.co.za with any issues that you are experiencing and we will gladly try to assist! You might also enjoy... • Styles: Riot Girl by Megan Panozzo

My collection this year is inspired by all of the women that I looked up to and have emulated throughout my life. Women like Annie Lennox, Cindy Lauper and bands like Bikini Kill and L7, started the Riot Girl movement, and inspired so many young women to be the feminists that they wanted to be. It was no longer about women burning their bras and trying to achieve equality, it was about being unapologetically themselves and living our lives the way we choose, not the way we were told. The music is fierce and loud, and punk rock was no longer just for men; a movement was born and we have rocked it and continued to be the bad asses we were born to be! I’m proud to be a riot girl and encourage young women to do the same. • Furr Hair is Looking For a Chair Rental, Cape Town

Furr Hair is a vibey hair salon in the lifestyle center Wembley Square in Gardens, Cape Town and has one last workstation available as a rent-a-chair setup. Wembley Square is a trendy center which has a very popular Virgin Active Gym, Vida E Café, Kead, Ben Wei Restaurant, a large residential complex and the Amazon Head Quarters to mention a few! The center has underground parking and some on-street parking. The setup allows you to run your own business without the hassle of running an entire salon - you just get to focus on what you love! Our existing stylists are made up predominantly of previous salon owners who have made far more money spending less time working, with far less admin and stress. Others have moved from a commission setup where they get to keep more of their turnover. Ideal candidates for this workstation: • A stylist who is working in the town area and looking to be their own boss and move away from the commission-based earnings with a client base that will follow them. This would make financial sense should your turnover be R25 000 and more. • Existing Salon Owner – Someone who is looking to close their salon and transition to a more lucrative and admin light working environment. Ideally from the same area as Town so as to retain their client base. The salon has an inverter so when Eskom lets us down, the lights still stay on! For the right candidate we are willing to assist with setup costs. Contact Sharon on 082 851 2002. Facebook | Instagram

  • From Box Blonde to Summer Ready: Hair by Gill, Dainfern, Transforms

This “lockdown box blonde” was transformed to shimmering summer gloriousness with babylights giving it a multidimensional feel. Exactly the sought-after, beautiful look that every client desires! Here is how Gill, achieved the look: I was working on previously lightened hair. (My client did it at home). Extremely yellow with streaks of orange where her application and/or lift wasn’t great. I used Matrix Bondultim8 as I do on all my clients that have lightened hair. Picked up ‘baby lites’ & used 11A Matrix Socolor. Then I covered the rest of the hair with Matrix Socolor 6m. I used Keep me Vivid shampoo & conditioner. Hair by Gill is located at Basecut Hair Studio in Dainfern, Jhb. Love this look? Like Hair by Gill’s Facebook page HERE
