- 15 Years of Fabulous: Kadus Shines Bright at a Night of Glitz and Great Hair
On Sunday 1 June mhb welcomed distinguished Kadus Professional customers to a glitz and glamour event at Stardust Nightclub in Woodstock, Cape Town. The much-anticipated event celebrated 15 years of Kadus success in South Africa. Guests were welcomed by mhb National Sales Manager, Jacques Nortje, and mhb Managing Director, Chris Stofberg. The pair kickstarted the tone of the evening with some serious dance moves and mimed renditions of popular 2010 songs befitting the Kadus era of introduction. In 2010, Chris and the mhb team identified a need to serve small, independent hair salons in a sustainable and profitable way that served everyone. Kadus, founded by German hairdresser Ludwig Kegel in 1917 who invented the first disinfectant for barber clippers and blades, had long since become a household name in Europe and further afield. With its acquisition by the Wella Group in 1974 Kadus greatly benefitted from advanced research and innovation. In addition, the Kadus ethos underscored what mhb wanted to achieve and the time was right to introduce it to the South African hair industry. We believe small is the future We believe the best business is your own We believe freedom should not come at a price We believe creativity is born from simplicity We believe your peers are your best source of inspiration and education. “Kadus is one of our most successful brands,” said Chris. “It is less complex and more economically priced than any of our other brands, but it is on the same level in terms of quality. Its ability to unlock creativity is world-class.” Following on from Chris’ comments, Kadus Ambassadors for South Africa, Chad and Leoanne De Lange from The Cottage Salon in Durbanville, took to the stage with a dynamic timeline hair show illustrating Kadus’ creativity over the years. The results were beautiful with many fun elements added. After a scrumptious three-course meal and complimentary drinks, guests prepared for the highlight of the night, the Kadus Business Awards. Jacques Nortje, on behalf of the entire mhb team thanked all loyal Kadus customers. He followed by awarding four outstanding salons who had outstripped all expectations during 2024 and 2025 respectively. 2024 Kadus Retailer of the Year : Lynne Hair & Beauty, Western Cape. 2024 Kadus Colour Salon of the Year : Hair on Edge, KwaZulu-Natal. 2025 Kadus Retailer of the Year : Rene Marais, Western Cape. 2025 Kadus Colour Salon of the Year : Salon Bellizia, Gauteng. Maison Le Must in the Free State received the Loyalty Award for being the first Kadus Professional client when it was launched in June 2010. It was extraordinary to learn that Maison Le Must has placed an order every month since 2010 having never missing a beat! A very well-deserved award. Three mhb sales team members were awarded for their Outstanding Contribution to the Kadus brand: Terence Vance, Free State, Grant Matthee, Western Cape, and Nico Van Wyngaard, Eastern Cape. Chris singled out the recipients by highlighting their individual journeys with Kadus from the outset and the impact they had made in the trade. “There are many good hair products in the market, but what makes one stand out from the rest will always be the people behind the brand. The relationships our consultants build with their customers and the professional levels of support they provide is what makes all the difference. These three gentlemen have met these criteria and performed above and beyond.” he concluded. With the formalities over, the evening was brought to a fever pitch by a stunning stage performance from Stardust crew and staff. What followed was a magnificent evening of laughter and happiness.

- EOHCB The Paper Trail: Navigating South Africa's Record Retention Requirements
Businesses face an increasingly complex challenge: how long to keep their records. From small enterprises to major corporations, the question isn't just about storage space anymore – it's about legal compliance, risk management, and data protection. The more information retained beyond the statutory date, the greater the risk of data breaches is a warning issued by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). But on the other hand destroying records too early could land organizations in serious legal trouble. Corporate Records: The Backbone of Business DocumentationClose Corporations Face Strict Requirements The requirements for closed corporations are among the most demanding in South African business law: Accounting records and supporting schedules must be kept for 15 years Annual financial statements require a 15-year retention period Founding statements (CK1) and amendments (CK2 & CK2A) must be kept indefinitely Minutes and resolutions are subject to indefinite retention The Companies Act Framework The Companies Act 71 of 2008 sets different standards that have become a cornerstone of business documentation: Basic company records require a minimum 7-year retention Notice of incorporation and memorandum of incorporation must be kept indefinitely Securities register and company rules need indefinite retention Financial statements and accounting records require 7 years of safe keeping Consumer Protection and Financial Documentation: A Balancing Act The Consumer Protection Act takes a more lenient approach, requiring just 3 years of retention for: Consumer information and communications Conflict of interest disclosures Records of advice Promotional competition records Auction documentation However, financial institutions face stricter requirements under various laws: Customer due diligence records: 5 years from relationship end Transaction records: 5 years from completion Suspicious transaction reports: 5 years from reporting date Employment Records: Beyond the Basics The employment sector presents some of the most varied retention requirements in South African law. While basic records like books of account need only three years of retention, other documents demand permanent storage. Employee disciplinary records, for instance, must be kept indefinitely – a requirement that often catches businesses off guard. Health and Safety Documentation Perhaps most striking are the health and safety record requirements: Health & safety committee records: 3 years Incident records: 3 years Asbestos records: An astounding 50 years Hazardous biological agents records: 40 years The Tax Landscape SARS has established clear guidelines based on different scenarios: Submitted returns must be kept for 5 years from submission Records for unsubmitted returns must be retained indefinitely Documents under audit or appeal must be kept until resolution VAT documentation requires 5 years of retention The POPIA Impact The Protection of Personal Information Act has revolutionized record retention in South Africa. While other laws set minimum retention periods, POPIA effectively sets maximum ones. Organizations must now: Keep records only as long as necessary for their original purpose Justify extended retention through law or contract Destroy records in a way that prevents reconstruction Ensure electronic deletions are permanent and unrecoverable Best Practices for Modern Business Comprehensive Documentation System Maintain records in their original form Implement orderly filing systems Ensure accessibility for inspections Electronic Record Management Obtain proper authorization for electronic systems Secure special permission for offshore storage Implement robust backup systems Best way to dispose of documentation (after the appropriate periods): To ensure the secure and compliant disposal of company documents, combining secure practices with the services of certified disposal companies is a highly effective approach. Here are comprehensive steps for safely getting rid of sensitive company documents: Shredding: For in-office shredding, use a cross-cut or micro-cut shredder to thoroughly destroy paper documents. Alternatively, there are companies who provide on-site shredding with industrial-grade machines, ensuring documents are immediately and securely destroyed. Secure Collection: Certified disposal companies often provide secure, locked containers or bins for on-site storage of documents awaiting disposal. These bins can be kept at the company’s location until regular pick-up by the disposal service, maintaining security at every stage. Electronic Data Destruction: For digital files, use secure deletion software to overwrite data multiple times before disposal. Certified disposal services can physically destroy or degauss hard drives, issuing a certificate of destruction for each device. Certificate of Destruction: After processing, certified companies issue a certificate of destruction, documenting the method, date, and time of disposal. This certificate serves as proof for regulatory compliance with data protection laws, and helps verify that the company has taken due diligence in securely destroying sensitive information. Environmentally Responsible Disposal: Many certified disposal companies recycle shredded paper and e-waste, ensuring compliance with environmental standards. This sustainable approach allows companies to meet both data protection and environmental responsibilities. As businesses increasingly digitize their operations, the challenges of record retention are evolving. The key isn't just keeping everything forever or destroying records as soon as possible – it's about finding the balance between compliance and practicality. Proper record retention isn't optional – it's essential for survival in an increasingly regulated environment. The cost of proper record retention may be significant, but the cost of non-compliance could be far higher. Remember: When multiple retention periods apply to the same records, always follow the longer period. When in doubt, consult legal experts who can provide guidance specific to your industry and circumstances. In the world of record retention, knowledge isn't just power – it's protection For any further information or enquiries please contact the EOHCB representative in your area by clicking HERE . - Stories of Joy & Success: Ansone Van Zyl of Hair Artistry & Hartenbos Hair Academy
From One Chair in a Beauty Room to Leading an Academy by the Sea - Ansoné van Zyl Ten years ago, I started in the smallest way possible — one chair, a mirror, and a basin inside a friend’s beauty room. My “salon” was a corner space and my first retail stand held just a handful of products. But I had passion and a deep desire to make people feel beautiful. I studied hairdressing at THASA in Potchefstroom. After qualifying, I landed a job in a salon… but within three months, I was told “hair isn’t really your thing.” I gave up. For a few weeks, I stopped doing hair completely, questioning everything. But then, something shifted. Clients I had helped during my apprenticeship began reaching out, asking me to do their hair. That one small flame was all it took. I set up a single station in my friend’s beauty room in Schweizer-Reneke — and slowly, it grew. Within months, I moved to a bigger space. My small-town salon flourished, but I eventually hit a ceiling — limited by the town’s size, even though my ambition kept growing. I poured myself into education, doing extra courses, and a lot of free work just to improve. I knew I wanted more. So I made the biggest decision of my life: I packed up and moved to the Western Cape. The journey from then to now. Proof that dreams grow when you work for them. Starting over in a new province, a new town, with no client base and no guarantees, was terrifying. I worked long, hard hours — and some days it felt like I would never reach where I wanted to be. But step by step, it happened. Today, I run Hair Artistry by Ansoné van Zyl and Hartenbos Hair Academy — two businesses built from grit, passion, and purpose. Even Lockdown in 2020 didn’t stop me. I almost closed my doors, but within months had excelled to greater heights with just pushing through - with the support of my clients and Goldwell. I now mentor students the way I wish someone mentored me back then. We’re creating not only stylists, but confident professionals ready to take on the industry. And we’re not stopping here — in 2026, we’re aiming for 15+ full-time students, and we’re hosting our next Open Day this July. The goal is clear: 🌟 Take the hair industry in South Africa to the next level 🌟 Build a support network for upcoming stylists 🌟 Become known nationwide for quality, mentorship, and heart I still have people who supported me from the start — and I want to be that person for someone else now.
- Style Inspiration: Noir by Olga Garcia
The NOIR collection by Olga García is born from the contrast between black and white, a visual game that reflects the duality of today's man: elegant and rebellious, classic and avant-garde. This concept translates into cuts that adapt to a versatile man, who seeks to express his personality through texture, movement and freedom. The proposal ranges from short cuts with a wet and glamorous texture, ideal for a modern and dynamic style, to longer looks, with updos that exploit the sophistication of the curl. Medium cuts, parted and tousled, celebrate the naturalness of the hair, creating a balance between unstructured and styled. NOIR is for the man who is not afraid of change, who dares to try new styles and who understands that versatility is not just in the length, but in the texture: from the most natural curl to the most polished finish. A collection that redefines the masculine with texture as the main protagonist, playing with humidity and shape to highlight the wearer's individuality and character.
