  • EOHCB: The Importance of Using Correct Salon Products: A Commitment to Safety and Compliance Regulations and Required Standards

In the hair, beauty, and wellness industry, safety and quality are essential components of client care. Salons are entrusted with clients’ well-being, requiring a conscientious commitment to using appropriate products and adhering to strict regulatory standards. In South Africa, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), South African National Standards (SANS) regulations, and the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics, and Disinfectants Act (Act No. 54 of 1972) govern safety and compliance in salons. These frameworks not only protect clients but also uphold the salon's integrity and professional reputation.   Understanding the Occupational Health and Safety Act & Role The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) sets standards to protect both clients and employees in workplace environments, including salons. Under the OHSA, salons must take reasonable steps to identify and control hazards, ensure products used in treatments are safe and correctly labeled, and verify that they are suitable for intended purposes. By complying with the OHSA, salons demonstrate a commitment to creating a safe environment for both clients and staff, fostering trust and accountability.   The Role of SANS Regulations in Product Safety Complementing the OHSA, the South African National Standards (SANS) regulations specify requirements for salon products, including ingredient safety and proper labeling. These standards ensure that products meet safety requirements, which reduces the risk of adverse reactions, promotes health, and provides a reliable standard for clients seeking safe, high-quality services.   Why Using the Correct Products Matters 1. Client Safety:  Using safe, suitable products is essential to client care. Many salon products contain chemicals that, if mismatched to a client’s skin type or needs, can lead to allergic reactions, skin irritations, or worse. Ensuring that products are tailored to each client reduces these risks and enhances their experience. 2. Professional Reputation:  A salon’s reputation depends on the quality and safety of its services. Using unsafe or inappropriate products can lead to negative experiences, potentially harming clients and damaging the salon's credibility. Prioritizing product safety is crucial to earning and maintaining client trust. 3. Legal Compliance:  Adherence to OHSA and SANS regulations is not optional; it’s essential for avoiding fines, penalties, and legal action. Non-compliance can also harm a salon’s standing, highlighting the importance of understanding and implementing these regulations to avoid potential legal issues. 4. Staff Education and Training:  To maintain these standards, salon professionals must be well-trained in product usage. Ongoing education about product composition, proper application techniques, and potential side effects helps ensure that staff make informed decisions, promoting safety and a higher quality of service. 5. Environmental Impact:  Many clients seek eco-friendly and sustainable options. Salons that select environmentally friendly products can appeal to these consumers while ensuring compliance with safety standards.   How does South African Regulations Governing Cosmetics? In South Africa, the sale and distribution of cosmetics fall under the Medicines and Related Substances Act (Act 101 of 1965) and the Regulations Relating to the Labeling, Advertising, and Composition of Cosmetics (GN R. 429 of 22 December 2017). These regulations govern everything from product quality to fair trade practices in the cosmetics industry.   Safety Standards and Compliance in Cosmetics Cosmetics in South Africa must be safe for human health under normal use. Manufacturers and importers are responsible for safety assessments, which include analyzing product composition, microbiological quality, toxicity profiles, and potential adverse effects. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is required, and each product must have an information file for at least ten years.   Labeling Requirements Clear, informative labeling is essential for consumer safety. Labels must include the product name, manufacturer details, country of origin, batch number, list of ingredients, expiration date, and any warnings or precautions. Proper labeling ensures transparency and consumer trust.   Product Claims and Advertising Standards The Foodstuffs, Cosmetics, and Disinfectants Act (Act No. 54 of 1972) mandates that advertising claims be truthful and scientifically substantiated, protecting consumers from misleading information. Terms such as “clinically proven” must be supported by rigorous evidence, ensuring consumers are not misled by exaggerated claims.   Importance of professional indemnity insurance for salons Professional indemnity insurance is critical for salons, providing needed protection against claims of negligence, mistakes, or inadequate service that might lead to a client’s financial loss. In an industry involving close personal interaction and specific expertise—such as hairdressing, skincare, and nail treatments—salons face unique risks, including dissatisfied clients, adverse reactions, or possible injuries. This insurance helps cover legal costs and potential settlements if a client pursues damages due to an error or unintended harm. With professional indemnity insurance in place, salons can operate with confidence, knowing they’re protected financially. It also demonstrates to clients that the salon prioritizes accountability and is committed to safeguarding their interests.   The Importance of Compliance for Beauty Salons and Suppliers The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) plays a vital role in overseeing the safety of beauty products in salons. This oversight extends to the facilities, as the SANS regulations specify hygiene and operational standards for salon environments, ensuring that clients are protected from potential health risks.   Professionals in the beauty industry must meet qualifications and certifications managed by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), providing clients confidence that staff are capable and informed. Suppliers must also comply with the Consumer Protection Act, ensuring products meet the advertised standards and that clients’ rights are respected.   The importance of using appropriate salon products cannot be overstated. Adhering to the OHSA, SANS, and Foodstuffs, Cosmetics, and Disinfectants Act regulations is essential for client safety, upholding a professional reputation, maintaining legal compliance, promoting staff education, and considering environmental impact. By committing to these standards, salons demonstrate a dedication to safety, professionalism, and excellence, fostering an environment where clients feel valued and cared for. Compliance with South Africa’s regulatory requirements creates a trusted space where clients can confidently enjoy the full range of beauty services. • Depot® The Male Tools & Co: Celebrating the Heroes of Barbering - Dario J. Braun

With  BARBERS’ STORIES  we want to celebrate our  heroes . Men  who are visionaries, artists,  barbers  who have revolutionised an ancient craft. A small European tour, north to south, meeting them on the way so that we can tell you their stories. The journey begins. HAARLEM Holland Haarlem is the quintessence of the Dutch city, located in the heart of the Dutch countryside: cobblestone streets, ancient canals, historic buildings, great churches, cosy cafes, craft breweries, hidden courtyards. A world apart from the capital, where the aristocratic grandeur and Enlightenment heritage remain untouched, with its enthusiasm for knowledge. But Haarlem also owns a "pop" side. Considered the best shopping destination in the Netherlands, it blends major brands and concept stores, independent labels, old-school and truly special barbershops, all waiting to be explored. [BARBER] Dario J. Braun @ DARIOSBARBERS.NL Dario J. Braun is young, but he already has a wealth of experience under his belt, having started his career as a hairdresser at the age of 18 and having a clear vision of the magnitude of his dream from the very beginning: to do things on a grand scale. Dario's barbershop is not only the largest in the city, but also one of the first in Haarlem, opened in 2015, following specialised barber training, achieved when the phenomenon of cosmetics and services dedicated to men was still emerging. Now, Dario, along with his team, has created a place that exudes creativity from every corner, without ever compromising on the extremely high quality of service. We met him to listen to his story. • Christel House South Africa Students and Alumni Showcase Talent at Global Hairdressing Event

We are incredibly proud to share that two of our talented matric students, Christaylior B., (Mitchell’s Plain) and Chelsea P., (Lotus River) along with two of our alumni, Amy-Lee A., (Manenberg) and Marychan O., (Strandfontein) attended and participated in the Intercoiffure Mondial Hamburg 25 World Congress. The global hairdressing showcase took place recently in Hamburg, Germany over 5 days. This Youth Month serves as an essential reminder of the significance of investing in the future of our young people, ensuring their inclusion in South Africa’s trajectory towards economic growth and renewal. These outstanding young women have been part of the hairdressing training programme offered at our school, made possible through our valued partnership with Intercoiffure Mondial’s Education for Life initiative and was introduced to our school in 2016 by Ezra Isaacs (Coiffure Ezra Hair and Beauty Salon), Rolf Losken and Jean Witte. Two years ago, the girls participated in a local hairdressing showcase held in Cape Town, the Queen Charlotte Show. Their talent and professionalism caught the attention of representatives from Education for Life, who were so impressed that they took the girls through a selection process and then offered four of them sponsorship to attend the Hamburg 25 World Congress.   This marks the first international trip for these students, and they are beyond excited and deeply grateful to Intercoiffure Mondial, Education for Life, Wella Professionals, Goldwell, Schwarzkopf, College of Cape Town, and all the sponsors and supporters who have made this journey possible. One of our alumni, Amy-Lee is studying hairdressing at the College of Cape Town. She shares, “I am overwhelmed and overjoyed with this opportunity. • ESP Industry Index - May 2025

Monthly Service Revenue   has a steady increase month to month and annually despite the significant decrease from April to May which has been an annual trend.   Total Retail Revenue has a slight decrease from March to May however the overall monthly Retail performance is showing a positive trend and increased revenue when comparing to last year. This increase in revenue comes despite a continued decrease in client visits—both monthly and annually.   The data reveals an encouraging trend. Although overall foot traffic has decreased, those who do visit are spending more. This indicates stronger customer engagement and a higher value placed on the experience or offerings. It’s a clear sign that when clients do come, they’re more invested.   The opportunity now lies in building on this engagement by boosting client retention and reactivating past visitors—ensuring that this deeper connection translates into sustainable, long-term growth.   All the best, ESP Management Email:   info@espconnect.africa

We at Hairnews are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Willie Pietersen, a revered figure in South Africa's hairdressing and beauty industry. Willie's leadership extended beyond his own establishment, Hair Xotica in Pretoria, which itself has stood as a gold standard for best practices, professional growth and ethics. His extensive tenure and past presidency at the EOHCB, along with his active participation in the National Bargaining Council, highlight his pivotal role in establishing and improving industry standards and advocating for the advancement and wellbeing of employers, employees, and professionals alike. He has been a visionary leader and mentor for South Africa's personal care industry. Willie was committed to fostering talent and advancing skills throughout his life. With his dedicated guidance and involvement in training, mentorship initiatives, and both local and international competitions, he profoundly impacted countless hairdressers. His legacy is one of unflagging support for the hairdressing community, giving inspiration to a generation of professionals to pursue excellence with passion and integrity. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, colleagues, and all who were touched by his remarkable life. May his memory continue to inspire and guide the industry he so dearly loved. Hairnews Team  – Brad, Belinda & Beth • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • It’s impossible to imagine the South African hairdressing industry without Willie Pietersen’s presence. Willie was passionate about uplifting the industry, whether it was improving the prospects of the humblest of street hairdressers, or working tirelessly to ensure the success of a major industry competition. He walked his talk, getting involved in industry organisations and training initiatives to bring about change and improvement, while also running his own successful salon. He had time for everyone, and was always fair minded, enthusiastic, compassionate, and with a mischievous sense of humour, too. Willie suffered immense loss and tragedy in his own life, and the courage and resilience with which he faced it was an example to us all. Willie was an icon, and he will be sorely missed. Sending deepest sympathy to all those who were close to him.   Jassy Mackenzie, Former editor of SA Hairdressers Journal and former owner of Hairnews Photos above courtesy Wanda Booysen (Daughter) My journey in the hairdressing industry began as a young apprentice, working alongside a salon manager in what could be described as a toxic environment. It was just the two of us, as the owners were focused on their other business. When I addressed my concerns to the owners, the manager retaliated in a startlingly swift and public manner, firing me on the spot. It was very frightening. My mom went to the hair dressing union and then phoned me and gave me directions. A disciplinary hearing date was set. I was a 19 year old apprentice petrified, new in the industry. Willie was chairing the hearing. During the hearing, the salon owner admitted the situation was problematic, but as I was an appy, he regrettably had to support his manager in the decision-making process. After the hearing, unbeknownst to myself, Willie approached my ex-boss and asked if he could offer me a job. He said he could, so then Willie phoned my mom and asked her permission as well. And lastly, he asked me. Through his amazing intervention, I was able to complete my apprenticeship with Willie and Marja and it was the best! I remember the day Willie came running into the salon, beaming with pride, to tell us I had the highest marks on the trade test exam (he got to the see the marks) - we had cake that day in the salon! I owe so much of the stylist I am today to the firm foundation of my apprenticeship with Willie. In my darkest time, he offered me help and a hand and I will forever be grateful. When I decided to open up on my own, he advised me and helped me fulfil my dream.  Respect to Willie. Rest in Peace to an amazing mentor. Your legacy will live on. I was blessed to have been trained by one of the best. Thank you. Leanne Cursons • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • I will fondly remember you, dear Willie,  for being one of a kind, the one and only, and for the joy you brought into the lives of Quintin, Felix and myself. I will always remember your support when I started my journey with Fudge ... Fudgebunny and the Hair Industry. Being married to a brilliant hairdresser made it so much easier. You were there for me and I was there for you! Willie, you focused on being kind, generous and positive. You had a talent like no other and brought excitement, laughter, funny stories and a good naughtiness into our life's, you were so proud of EVERYTHING we did and achieved. WE created memories and moments that expanded over more than 40 years. I am so very grateful and blessed that we had such a wonderful bond, I will cherish and respect it forever and ever. May all those who were inspired by everything you did and gave continue your LEGACY.  I salute you, may you rest gently, my gentle giant. I love you till eternity.  Karen Pietersen This is such terrible news. Willie was a friend, colleague and mentor to myself and many others. What a sad day. I hope his family finds strength in the tributes from around world. Rest easy my bud! Paul Fox • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • A giant has fallen. I will forever cherish the days spent together serving and promoting Skills Development in the entire country. You forever spoke about your family, looking forward to spending your holidays, your birthday in December.
