- Retail Reminder: Tips from Georg Marnewick of Take Note Trading
Use the following to promote retailing within your salon: Client days or events to promote retail products | salons should involve their suppliers to assist them to sell retail to the end-users; Give-aways | salon owners know their client base and therefore know what products clients will respond to as a give-away; Discounts | negotiate a special discount for retail products from your supplier and pass such discounts on to your clients Free products | negotiate free products from your supplier and pass such free products on to your clients Competitions | Involve your clients in competitions on your social media pages Free blow-dry | if you haven’t seen you client in a while, invite them for a free blow-dry so that they can experience that they are safe in your salon. Salon online shops | if salons want to compete online, they should invest and develop online shops for their salons from which their clientele can purchase their retail products. Online shops could generate much needed retail turnover and their salon clientele will be more loyal to such a salon than buying elsewhere Need more tips? Read our full article HERE.
- Shape Shifter: Post Lockdown Trend Prediction from Thomas Hills
TH1 Hair director Thomas Hills, UK, has identified three key post-lockdown trends that will be strongly in demand in your salon. Here’s the first – Shape Shifter. While lockdown has played havoc with our clients’ haircare regimes, it’s also helped shine a spotlight on what’s really necessary when it comes to looking after their locks. With this in mind, one of the biggest trends to emerge post lockdown, I believe, will be shorter more versatile cuts that really encourage a client’s natural texture, with minimum effort required – think effortless shape and movement with a masculine, almost cherubim appeal. I also think clients will want to spend less time hair-drying their locks, opting for air-drying instead. Cuts like these two looks from my About a Girl (above left) and Iconic collections (right) are the perfect example of preparation and shape within the cut, allowing for the perfect fusion of form and texture. Something I predict will be a huge hit in the forthcoming months.

- Tips to Make You an Effective People Manager – by EOHCB
What is people management? People management is an increasingly broad topic that covers what it means to develop, organise, problem-solve for, and grow the people-side of the business. These skills range from being able to mediate a personality clash between team members to building an effective human resources system for a business. We all have our own idea of what effective people management is. We know what it is like to work for an ineffective manager, but we also do not have the specific idea of what a great people manager is. With that in mind, here are some tips, on how to become a better people manager. 1. People management starts with listening Good management is about preventing fires before you have to kill them, and a lot of the time, this requires gaining information from members of your team and making determinations on possible negative outcomes. Effective people management is also about understanding possible future risks from within the team, such as illness, absenteeism or outright sabotage. It is easier to get a grasp of these matters, if you understand your team. 2. Learn to separate personal problems from organizational problems Frequently, we will need to help our team understand this, themselves. An argument between Employee A and Employee B on a personal matter should not influence the working environment in any way. It should not, but it can; and if it does, the effective People Manager can mediate this personal matter just as effectively as a professional matter. At the same time, effective people managers understand that a team member’s time is important, and spending their time on personal issues, will not result in meeting company goals. 3. Understand each employee's purpose Role clashing is one of the primary reasons for arguments and frustration within a team. As an effective people manager, you must know what role each team member plays, as well as their roles and responsibilities in those roles. That way, your delegation of tasks will be more effective, and assembling a small team for a project will hopefully, result in a more productive output. At this same time, it is important to know which staff members might have a destructive effect on the team 4. Balance praise and criticism wisely Many arguments and debates have attempted to determine whether individuals are more motivated by praise and reward, or by criticism and punishment. Often, we find ourselves leaning towards the positive realm, hoping that the management of our staff members will only be to reward excellence and innovation. However, staff are not always going to conduct themselves in the positive realm of behaviour, sometimes staff will underperform, sometimes they will outright refuse to work, and sometimes they will put great effort into frustrating workplace activities. At these times, it is vital to maintain your managerial tasks of praise and criticism, never prioritizing one of the other for too long. 5. Check in when nothing is wrong As mentioned earlier, effective management is not about killing fires when they happen, but rather about prevention completely. In light of this, it is best to maintain frequent communication with the team, gaining a better understanding of the team’s working environment and morale. What can be done to make the work easier? More productive? What can we do to alleviate stresses and improve turnover? Staff will also recognise that management’s role is not only to be involved when matters are at their worst, but also to assist in the betterment of the working environment and experience. When matters get to a point where a staff member needs counselling, disciplinary action or a change in job description, be sure to contact a EOHCB representative for further assistance in handling matters effectively and in compliance with Legislation. www.eohcb.co.za/contact-
- Styles: Hope by Olga García Estilistas
The collection is an allegory about hope and freedom, a hymn to the creative possibilities of the human being through hairdressing. A rebirth that is relived in each of the images as if it were a reality that is engendered, then matures and is reborn. This collection was born with the pandemic and the confinement caused the need for reinvention and transformed the concept by incorporating makeup. The final result is the work of the talent of Olga García and José Luis Blasco, who managed to turn hair into a canvas on which to proclaim slogans and vindictive messages. An experimental and innovative process that led them to work with slimeto create the image of rebirth. With Rebirth, a placenta is recreated, as if it were a newborn, hence the moistened textures and the melted and drained colors. With the Nacimientolook, the hair is kept moisturized with chromatic contrasts that reinforce the liquid texture. Next came Hope, with an image named after the collection, a very extreme and daring short style. Faithhas simple lines, with very subtle curves, an elegant image that conveys melancholy as well as faith for a new life with a melancholic touch. The last image gives us a multicolored vision of the world with chromatic stripes full of emotion. In Hope, hair is more symbolic than ever with the addition of meaningful words. Textures are also a motto that narrates the process of gestation and birth of a reality that does not believe in limits or fear, but explodes from life and hope. A passionate, emotional and creative worldview that tries to regain joy through hairdressing. Hope is a very special collection since Esther de la Fuente, the daughter of Olga García, and her sister, Esther García, have collaborated on it. We are a Johannesburg based company that specialise in the sharpening and servicing of hairdresser / stylist scissors of all kinds whether they are convex, bevelled or serrated and of Japanese or German style. We service all brands both left and right handed. We are not a mobile service but rather operate from a fully equipped workshop with the latest equipment, similar to that used by scissor manufacturers around the world. Most mobile sharpeners sharpen convex scissors at the wrong angle, destroying the edge which decreases the efficiency of your scissor. We are able to fix this problem for you by re-convexing your scissors to make them like new. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Testimonials from Salons Dear Laurence Thank you again for the excellent speedy service!! This technique considerably increases the useable life of your scissors. Sharpening will either extend their life...or shorten it! Most scissors require sharpening every three to six months. When properly cared for your scissors should give you many years of trouble-free service. Turnaround time is typically 2 days to dispatching back to you after receipt.
