  • Style Inspiration POS NEG by Elly Paynter

‘POS NEG‘ explores the dynamic relationship between positive and negative space, interpreted through hair cutting and colour. Inspired by the tension and harmony that exists between being present and being absent, each look uses bold split tones, colour blocking, and dramatic shapes, creating a juxtaposition between that positive and negative space. Feature colours of red, orange, and blue are intermixed with anchor tones of black, brown, and blonde to create structured voids and vibrant fills - transforming hair into a living sculpture of artistic expression. The cutting techniques emphasize silhouette and shadow, celebrating both the seen and the unseen with sharp edges and deliberate spaces. Colour and shape are manipulated to echo the rhythm of space - softer, more subtle elements collide with texture and movement, while the overall aesthetic remains editorial, edgy and vibrant, and predominantly high-impact. Through this lens, hair becomes not just a medium of beauty, but a canvas of visual storytelling, where absence is just as powerful as presence. HAIR – Colour Inspiration Working to the concept of negative and positive space, presence and absence, I was inspired to create and work with a colour palette that reflected this, and complemented the hair cuts. Bold, feature colours of red, orange and blue were anchored by black, brown and blonde hues with a combination of daring and subtle colour placement enhancing and exaggerating the texture and movement within the styles. Androgyny fused with femininity, strength melded with softness, dramatic shapes were brought to life with split tones and colour blocking techniques to really accentuate texture and impact the shape of the expertly crafted styles. MAKEUP For this shoot, skin was kept clean adhering to the brief of minimalist but high impact. The overall theme of movement, texture and juxtaposing positive and negative space, was reflected in the eye makeup; this was deliberately messy and blurred. Lips were defined with liner and were either impactful and bold, or left more natural. STYLING The extensive styling colour palette was composed of blues, greys, silvers, reds, cream and white with varied textures and finishes – fluffy, metallic, rough and sheer. Reflecting the overall feel of the shoot, we choose to layer the tonal outfits with bold elements that blend beautifully with the elements and storytelling introduced through the hair. PHOTOGRAPHY The initial brief for the shoot backdrop was muted blue, grey or cream, however we opted for a muted pale blue which delivered cool warmth and allowed the hair cuts & colour to shine. An commercial yet editorial vibe was created using a combination of full/half body images and profile shots which allowed the hairstylist and photographer to play with lighting and contrasts. The result was a slightly desaturated or mildly blurred editing style that created a nostalgic, retro essence within the finished images. • Men's Trending Cuts from Jim Shaw

Now is the best time to change up your style. Whether you are after low maintenance cut or a bold new look, here are some styles I think are going to be making an appearance this Summer. Caesar Cut This versatile haircut features a short cut, with straight cut bangs layered to a uniform length all over the head. This is a relatively easy style to maintain and doesn’t require much upkeep. It suits all hair types, including straight, wavy and curly and provides a structured and clean appearance. While this is a simple style, it can be styled with texturising products for a more relaxed look or kept sharp for a more formal appearance. Textured Crop The textured crop is characterised by its shorter sides and back, paired with textured layers on top. The cut emphasises natural movement and texture for a low maintenance and casual look. A blunt fringe can be added straight across the forehead or a messier, softer fringe for a more relaxed feel. This style is easy to maintain and a simple tousle with your fingers will create piecey texture and shape. This popular style, remains a classic and doesn’t date quickly, making it a lasting choice. Mullet The mullet is a great option as the distinctive contrast in lengths creates a bold, rebellious look. The hair in the front and sides of the head is typically cut shorter, sometimes blended or faded, which creates a contrast to the longer hair in the back. This style creates a strong, graphic silhouette due to the dramatic difference in lengths. In recent years, the mullet has experienced a significant comeback, making it a great option if you are looking for a change. Broccoli Cut The broccoli cut features short, often tapered sides and back with a voluminous top of layered curls or waves that resemble a floret of broccoli. While this works best with naturally curly hair, a perm can be used to achieve the dense, textured look. This playful and modern look offers a carefree, yet stylish appearance with a nod to 90’s trends but with a distinct Gen Z twist.

  • EOHCB: Safeguarding Mental Wellness In The Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty & Skincare Industry As An Employer

By implementing mental wellness safeguarding strategies in the workplace, employers can create a healthier work environment where mental wellness is prioritized. This not only helps improve the wellbeing of employees but can also contribute to greater job satisfaction, loyalty, and productivity. Here are some strategies for safeguarding the mental wellness of your employees: 1. Create an Open and Supportive Environment Foster open communication:  Encourage your team to share their feelings and concerns openly. Let them know that it's okay to talk about mental health without fear of judgment. Active listening:  Listen attentively when employees share their challenges, whether personal or professional. Let them know they are heard. Encourage mental health days:  Just like physical health days, encourage your staff to take days off when they need a mental health break. Make it clear that they don't have to explain their personal struggles in detail. 2. Offer Access to Mental Health Resources Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs):  Consider providing access to confidential mental health services, such as counselling or therapy through an Employee Assistance Program. This gives employees professional support in times of need. Mental health training:  Equip managers and staff with the knowledge to recognize signs of burnout or distress in colleagues. Training in mental health first aid can help address issues early on. 3. Implement Flexible Work Policies Work-life balance:  Our industry can sometimes demand long hours, weekends, or holidays. Try to offer flexible schedules where possible to accommodate personal life and reduce burnout. Breaks during shifts: Ensure that employees have scheduled breaks during their shifts, especially during long or demanding working hours. A quick break can make a big difference in reducing stress. 4. Promote Physical Wellbeing Ergonomics in the workplace:  Ensure that workstations are ergonomically designed to prevent physical strain, as beauty professionals often stand for long periods, perform repetitive motions, and may experience physical discomfort. Offer wellness programs:  Provide opportunities for employees to engage in wellness activities, like yoga classes or mindfulness exercises. Offering these in the workplace can help relieve both physical and mental stress. 5. Maintain a Positive Work Culture Encourage teamwork and camaraderie:  Foster a team-oriented environment where colleagues support one another. A sense of belonging can be a strong factor in improving mental health. Recognition and appreciation:  Regularly acknowledge and appreciate the hard work of your employees. Recognition can improve morale and contribute to a sense of fulfilment in their work. 6. Support Professional Development Continuous learning:  Offer opportunities for employees to grow professionally through training, workshops, or attending industry events. This not only improves skills but also enhances job satisfaction. Career progression:  Help employees see a clear path for career advancement. This can alleviate feelings of stagnation and contribute to mental wellness by giving them goals to strive for. 7. Promote Healthy Client Interactions Set boundaries with clients:  Encourage employees to set and enforce professional boundaries with clients. Sometimes, clients can be demanding or overstep personal boundaries, which can be mentally taxing for employees. Support your team in managing these relationships. Customer service training:  Equip employees with strategies for dealing with difficult clients or situations. This can alleviate the pressure of handling difficult interactions and help employees maintain their mental balance. 8. Encourage Regular Reflection and Feedback Regular check-ins:   Conduct regular one-on-one check-ins with your employees to discuss how they are doing. This can be an opportunity for employees to talk about any stressors, work-related challenges, or personal issues impacting their wellbeing. Feedback loops:  Create a system where employees feel comfortable providing feedback on their workload, work environment, or mental health initiatives. This empowers them and helps you address any emerging issues. 9. Address Burnout Early Recognize the signs of burnout:  Be aware of symptoms like irritability, fatigue, disengagement, or frequent sick days. If an employee seems to be struggling, address it early and offer support. Manage workloads:  Help staff manage their workloads to prevent overwork, which can lead to burnout. Delegate tasks efficiently and ensure employees aren't overloaded with responsibilities. 10. Lead by Example Model self-care:  As an employer, model good mental health practices by prioritizing your own wellbeing. Take breaks, maintain a work-life balance, and show that you value mental health. Encourage a stigma-free culture:  Combat any stigma around mental health by discussing it openly, promoting wellbeing initiatives, and ensuring your staff feels supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
