- Reuzel Look & Learn Cape Town: A Sold-Out Success
On 28 October, mhb’s Reuzel Look & Learn event at scar in Kloof Street, Cape Town brought together a full house of passionate stylists and barbers from across the city and beyond. This sold-out event was both a learning and a social opportunity for the diverse Reuzel community. The event kicked off sharply at 11 am, with early arrivals hoping to grab front row seats and explore their goodie bags. By 3 pm, the event wrapped up, leaving all who attended inspired and re-energized in their barbering journey. Clockwise: Barbara and Andrea from Image Exact; Tracy with a bag filled with goodies; Audrey from Placecol; Andrew, Nicole and Fazlien from Widow Maker. Jacques Nortje, mhb National Sales Manager, opened with a warm welcome and brief overview before handing over to Reuzel Scumbassador Renaldo Da Silva , who led the main presentation. Joined by three talented guest barbers, Renaldo and his team delivered an engaging and dynamic Look & Learn showcase. Look & Learn Live Action! Renaldo demonstrated two of Reuzel’s signature cuts, the Executive Contour Haircut and the Vanguard , followed by a beard styling demonstration that wowed the crowd. “I learned so much from Renaldo’s techniques. No matter how long you’ve been in the industry, there's something new to learn every day.” Stefanie, House of Hair, Paradyskloof Taufeeq Ajam of Clipperclub impressed with The Scumbag Boogie , a seamless fade, while his model added a touch of magic with an impromptu saxophone performance during the lunch break! "Mastering the 'clipper-over-comb' technique was great! I learned how you don’t always need a comb and clipper guards because it’s all about control and precision." Fazlien, Widow Maker, Cape Town Wian Beukes , also from Clipperclub took on the stage with a bold Flat Top cut, showing off his unique flair. “I’ve never seen a flat-top done before and getting a barber’s perspective was cool. It’s inspired me to do women’s cuts with a new perspective, especially with barbering techniques that can cross over.” Natascha, scar, Cape Town The surprise of the day was Senior Kadus Ambassador Chad De Lange , who demonstrated a signature approach to a fundamental cut. Clockwise: Chad and his model; Marie and Monique from Langebaan Hair Academy; Megan Flannigan from Hair Rebellion with Mikaela from Foxche Hair Design; Mary-Ann and Lenica from Salon Ben. Throughout the demonstrations, the audience looked, learned and asked questions, sharing afterward what their takeaways had been. "For me, today was about understanding the products better – how to use them on different hair types and head shapes. And also about being confident in the value of your services and not being afraid to charge properly.” Andrew, Widow Maker, Cape Town Lunch featured delicious South African-themed platters from Silver Spoon, which kept everyone energized for the afternoon sessions. The fun continued with the Reuzel Wheel of Fortune game, where everyone walked away with a Reuzel product, ensuring no one left empty-handed. The event also featured a Lucky Draw with a highly coveted, limited edition Reuzel X Kyone Clipper up for grabs. The winner, Monique Foot from Langebaan Hair Academy, was thrilled, capping off her day with a smile and a cheer. Clockwise: Winner of the Lucky Draw, Monique with mhb’s Elizma and Jacques, and Renaldo peering at her prize. A big thank you to scar for providing their stunning venue, which set the perfect tone for the day. Special guests, including Jody Botha from SA Barbers, added to the industry spirit of the event. “Seeing the ‘flat-top’ demonstration was definitely the highlight. Now I feel confident to offer Old School vibes to my clients – they’ve been asking!” Mikaela, Foxche Hair Design, Fishhoek Clockwise: Stanley, Jean and Sally from Essence; Debbie, Peroux, Jeandre, and Judy from Partners; Jody from Barbers of SA with Scumbassador Renaldo; Jean from Essence with mhb’s Jo-Anne and Marinda. Clockwise: Getting ready for a style transformation with Taufeeq; Chivonne from Hair Ink; Elani from FLHair; Nicole and Fazlien from Widow Maker. Clockwise: Niesie and Shannon from Placecol; Yasmeen from Frank Fowden with Jody from Barbers of SA; mhb’s Janine with Jorge from Moustache Barber Shop; mhb’s Natalie with Renaldo. - Depot® The Male Tools & Co: Celebrating the Heroes of Barbering - Diego Chamorro
With BARBERS’ STORIES we want to celebrate our heroes . Men who are visionaries, artists, barbers who have revolutionised an ancient craft. A small European tour, north to south, meeting them on the way so that we can tell you their stories. The journey begins. OVIEDO Spain The capital of Asturias, Oviedo has an unmistakable appearance, thanks to its splendid cathedral and the starting point of the 14- stage pilgrimage route to Santiago. Animated by a lively student population, it is the hub of textiles, food, metal goods, and firearms as well as having a renowned culinary scene. For those who desire a tranquil lifestyle, Oviedo is an ideal destination, therefore perfect for the timing that a serious grooming routine demands. [BARBER] Diego Chamorro @CHAMORROBARBERSHOP With his gentle and understated manner, one might not realise that Diego has already collected illustrious clients, such as Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, director of films like Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York, when he visited Oviedo in 2018 to receive the "Princesa de Asturias de Las Artes" Award. Or that it was Diego who was called directly by Barça (Barcelona Football Club) to fix the mess the players had made that one time when, in Oviedo to play against Sporting Gijón, they cut each other's hair and then refused to take the field because they were too embarrassed. We met Diego in his barbershop. SLOW BARBERING. - Style Inspiration: Berlin by Danielle Blakeley
Berlin: a fusion of bold art, design and nightlife, where boundaries refuse to be defined. Berlin has been known for its dramatic sharp bold direction since the 1990s to present; clubbing, arts, architecture and fashion. Berlin, the collection is defined the bold colours and strong themes, found not only on physical objects in the city but also its people. The new freedoms afforded to the people of Berlin saw an explosion of creativity. Everywhere in Berlin, colour and sharp geometric are centre stage. Be it in the city’s famous street art, buildings or underground arts/fashion scene. I have taken the bold colour blocking from club fashion and transcribed it to the hair in the collection. Further techniques such as freehand, stencilling and precision placement have been inspired by the vibe from Berlin. Strengthen with strong cuts that lead themselves to creative hair colour. If there was a Fashion Designer who symbolized my inspiration, it would be the German Philipp Plein. His work is bold and opulent yet provocative. A bit of rock and roll yet high end, taking inspiration of pop culture yet shaped by strong architectural lines. The continuous evolving styles of Berlin fashion and art, which oscillates and changes over time continue to provide new inspiration. A melting pot of style and glamour. - Depot® The Male Tools & Co: Celebrating the Heroes of Barbering - Dario J. Braun
With BARBERS’ STORIES we want to celebrate our heroes . Men who are visionaries, artists, barbers who have revolutionised an ancient craft. A small European tour, north to south, meeting them on the way so that we can tell you their stories. The journey begins. HAARLEM Holland Haarlem is the quintessence of the Dutch city, located in the heart of the Dutch countryside: cobblestone streets, ancient canals, historic buildings, great churches, cosy cafes, craft breweries, hidden courtyards. A world apart from the capital, where the aristocratic grandeur and Enlightenment heritage remain untouched, with its enthusiasm for knowledge. But Haarlem also owns a "pop" side. Considered the best shopping destination in the Netherlands, it blends major brands and concept stores, independent labels, old-school and truly special barbershops, all waiting to be explored. [BARBER] Dario J. Braun @ DARIOSBARBERS.NL Dario J. Braun is young, but he already has a wealth of experience under his belt, having started his career as a hairdresser at the age of 18 and having a clear vision of the magnitude of his dream from the very beginning: to do things on a grand scale. Dario's barbershop is not only the largest in the city, but also one of the first in Haarlem, opened in 2015, following specialised barber training, achieved when the phenomenon of cosmetics and services dedicated to men was still emerging. Now, Dario, along with his team, has created a place that exudes creativity from every corner, without ever compromising on the extremely high quality of service. We met him to listen to his story. - My Salon Software: Helping Salons Utilise Time to Produce More Money
IF TIME IS MONEY, AND WE CAN'T ACTUALLY CONTROL TIME, HOW THEN CAN WE MAKE TIME PRODUCE MORE MONEY? One of our biggest problems is that we don't always recognise the value of TIME! We don't SELL time, we just give it away as clients ask for it. Experience will tell you which months and which times of the month, which weeks, which days and which times of the day and week are most popular. These are often booked well in advance. Once you have identified these 'PRIME' time slots try NOT to book them first. But rather suggest (SELL) time slots before and after PRIME times. The clients cannot see your appointment book and 8 out of 10 times will take your suggestion. This leaves the PRIME time slots still open closer to the day. Another way of 'SELLING TIME' is to have a 2-tiered pricing system. When it's time to increase your services prices, as you should, only charge the higher prices Thursday to Sunday and leave Monday to Wednesday at the old prices. You are effectively offering your clients an early bird discount Mon to Wed. You will be surprised how many clients would be happy to enjoy your services AND save money. Yet another way of SELLING TIME' is to make more of it. If demographics allows it (if it suits your clients) expand your trading hours to pick up the really early clients as well as those who might wants an early evening appointment. For this you would need buy-in from your staff and to work with a staff scheduler - so some staff start early and go earlier and other start later and work the late shift. This could be a win, win, win for clients, and staff, and the business as a whole Scheduling staff working hours cannot be over-stated, particularly over busy periods such as month- ends, Christmas, Easter etc. It's crazy to turn away clients when short-staffed due to bad staff scheduling. Once again experience will tell you when you need to be fully staffed and when to work with skeleton staffing. Contact us today and take the BUSINESS side of your salon TO THE NEXT LEVEL. - EOHCB: The Nexus Between Unethical Behaviour & Mental Wellness In South African Businesses
The South African business landscape grapples with a lack of clear ethical norms and behaviour. Instances of major fraud, corruption, and unethical conduct persistently challenge the country's Organisations. Let us explore how unethical behaviour affects mental wellness, particularly within the South African context. Unethical Behaviour: A Growing Concern The Lack of an Ethical Framework: Frequent disclosures of fraud and corruption underscore the problem. Fraud cases in South African businesses have increased significantly over the years. Business Dilemmas: Business leaders often face ethical dilemmas, leading to compromised behaviour. The erosion of ethics contributes to a regrettable state of affairs. Impact on Mental Wellness Stress and Anxiety: Engaging in unethical behaviour can lead to chronic stress and anxiety. Employees involved in fraudulent activities experience heightened psychological strain. Guilt and Shame: Unethical conduct triggers feelings of guilt and shame. These emotions negatively impact mental well-being. Isolation and Trust Issues: Unethical behaviour strains interpersonal relationships. Employees may feel isolated and struggle with trust issues. Burnout and Productivity Loss: The mental toll of unethical actions contributes to burnout. Burnout reduces productivity and overall well-being. South African Context Resource Constraints in Mental Health Care: Access to mental health care remains limited for most of the population. Employers must address mental health support gaps. Ethical Principles in the Workplace: Employers should prioritise ethical conduct. Promoting a culture of integrity positively impacts mental wellness. Unethical behaviour takes a toll on mental wellness, affecting individuals, teams, and organisational performance. By fostering ethical leadership, promoting mental health awareness, and providing support, employers can create healthier work environments. Remember that ethical behaviour is not only a business imperative but also a crucial factor in safeguarding mental well-being.
