  • Colour Pricing Advice

Famous, edgy and successful Not Another Salon in London recently sent this message out to their clients regarding colour pricing. What do you think? Do you agree with this philosophy and could it help to educate your clients better on their hair colour maintenance appointments? "Did you know we are £20.00 cheaper if you come to get your roots done in 6 weeks time. Why? Because we just want you back? Nope. Because the prime time for us to create the least damage is 6 weeks. Once you go over this time we can no longer apply your colour in the same way." "We first have to apply a 'mid band' and then come back into your root. 1. This is such a faffy pain and takes soooo much more time (therefore we have to charge more) and 2. no matter how we try it will always cause more damage - oh and it gets worse- that's how you struggle with yellow bands. :( Sadly people think it's a good idea to 'give the hair a rest' for a bit if it's feeling a little delicate but oh my lord this is the worst thing you can do. Because hair grows at different times, the chances of breakage literally goes up week by week. :( With us now being booked up months in advance we recommend you booking a few appointments in one go so you don't end up in a pickle. Ps. We love you."

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT - YES OR NO? “Practice makes better not perfect. In the hair and beauty industry it is the striving to do better that keeps stylists doing their best. Perfect is a dangerous mind set to have because it takes away the motivation to make good, better. People who strive to make good better are always on top of their game.” By Terry Miles – My Salon Software and Business in a Box

  • Beaver Tail Hairstyles

You might not know that beaver tail hairstyles are a “thing”. But they are... a thing of awfulness! Whereas dreadlocks are formed by carefully twisting the hair and training it over months and years, beaver tail hairstyles (named because they resemble the long, flat tail of a beaver), are formed by simply neglecting the hair. No washing, no brushing - simply leaving it to gradually form a thick mat over the years. Naturally, this hairstyle is very unhygienic. The separation of dreadlocks allows for airflow which enables the natural clearing of flakes and dandruff from the scalp – but hair in one long clump means the scalp festers with retained skin flakes, sweat and oil. The clumped hair can become so long it drags on the floor, further attracting dirt. Hair that is left unwashed for a year can become five times heavier than hair which is properly washed and combed, so the beaver tail also pulls on the scalp, causing irritation and hair loss. Yes, a beaver tail hairstyle is a powerful counter cultural statement – but it has many health risks and adverse consequences. Let’s hope it never catches on here in South Africa.

  • Melbourne Street Styles

Inspired by feminism, this collection portrays women as independent, empowered, equal, free and desirable. The black turtlenecks used in the clothing created a timeless and consistent garment that spanned decades and was subtle and comfortable, allowing the focus to be on the hair fashion. To celebrate fashion and individuals’ interpretation of it, some imperfection and movement was added to the looks. Then colour was injected, to enhance the creations and make the hair leap from the page. • Before and After - Iced Platinum

By Leann Salzmann, owner of Hair and Skin, 279 Church Street (corner Witkoppen), Randburg. Tel: 083 233 1276. We adore this stunning transformation into a perfect, shiny, eye-catching, platinum bob with an icy blue-violet sheen. Here is how Leann Salzmann achieved this look: My guest had pre-lightened ends, faded midlengths, and a 3-month regrowth of virgin hair. With Paul Mitchell, we do what is called a Platinum Card – a full head foiling technique with Paul Mitchell Dual Purpose Lightener and 10-vol developer, applying just off scalp and midlengths. Once lifted to the desired tone, give the foils a gentle tug and apply to the root area. Once roots are lifted and you have a beautiful, even colour, rinse thoroughly and apply Paul Mitchell Super Strengthener, which treats the hair while in an alkaline state. We then shampooed with Paul Mitchell Post Color Shampoo, formulated to remove excess colour from the hair and scalp while reducing colour fade and damage, and stopping oxidation. We then applied Paul Mitchell Flash Finish, equal parts Icy Blue and Ultra Violet, with a 5-vol cream developer. We processed this for 20 minutes, rinsed, did a light shampoo with Post Color, and finished with Paul Mitchell Marula Oil conditioner. The Cut: We used Marula 3-in-1 Styling Cream as a cutting lotion to prep the hair. Hair was blowdried and then a clipper cut was performed on the dry hair.
