- Rent-A-Chairs Beware (Part 2)
Stephen Delport, CEO of the Bargaining Council, has put together a series of educational videos explaining the risks to salons who operate as rent-a-chairs rather than employing their staff. This series is to help salon owners understand the difference between employees and rent-a-chairs according to the South African Labour Relations Act. There is an important difference between the two and this has implications for the stylist and the salon owner. A person is presumed to be an employee if: a. The manner in which they work is subject to the control or direction of another person. b. Their working hours are subject to the control or direction of another person. c. In the case of a person who works for an organisation, that person forms part of the organisation. d. They have worked for the other person for at least 40 hours per month over the last three months. e. They are economically dependent on the person for whom they work or render services. f. They are provided with tools of the trade or work equipment by the other person. g. They only work for, or render services to, one person. Why do salons choose to have people renting a chair instead of being employed? a. They think they will be exempt from paying contributions to statutory bodies. b. However, this places the most vulnerable employees at risk. c. If the situation goes bad and the rent-a-chair leaves, they will often claim benefits such as leave pay, and will then state that they were an employee according to the list of requirements above. d. The growth in the trend of Rent-a-chairs is not good for the industry. If you would like to address the situation within your salon, or would like to make sure you are operating within the law, contact the HCSBC on 0861 427 227 or queries@hcsbc.co.za or go to www.hcsbc.co.za, and we will do our best to help you! - Bridal Styling
Keshira, known as the Glam Goddess, is a bridal hair and make-up artist based in Nelspruit. Here is some of her beautiful work, together with tips for freelancers. Keshira’s Freelance Tips: Brides are extremely stressed out, and even the smallest thing going wrong can upset them on their wedding day. To be a successful bridal freelance stylist, you need to be able to calm and reassure the bride, soothing her stress, and have the personality to be able to handle this environment calmly and cheerfully. Because a wedding is so stressful, I always insist on doing a full rehearsal of hair and make-up beforehand so that there is no disappointment on the day. Keshira’s Facebook page can be found here:

- Blog: Hairnews in Nelspruit - Day 2
Every hair salon runs on coffee, right? Well, Sophie, owner of The Puzzle in Sonpark Centre, realised how well the two go together, and she started up a business with a coffee shop on one side, and a hair and beauty salon on the other. That’s where the name of this friendly establishment came from – all the pieces of the puzzle, fitting together! From there, I headed to the lovely Salonique in the same centre, to meet the friendly team headed by Lizelle, and to have my hair expertly blow-dried. It is great to see so many salons in an area, so busy – and so many stylists who simply adore what they do. After that, it was off to Ilanga Mall to see Hair Quarters – a really stunning salon that boasts an enviable retail display. This salon is part of a chain of three, but each one is in a different mall with its own name, decor and identity. A really clever idea. My next meeting was with the Glam Goddess, freelance make-up artist and hairstylist Keshira, who met me for coffee. We chatted about what it takes to succeed in the freelance world as a wedding stylist – and she gave me the most stunning photos of brides she has styled. Look out for her work – featured soon in Hairnews. Here is a taster!

- Nelspruit Blog Day 1
What a beautiful place Nelspruit is! It’s relaxed, gorgeously pretty, and filled with people who love living there - many hair professionals included. People who travel to Nelspruit for business often start enquiring how much houses cost... and whether they can make a permanent move there...! My first stop was the TPO – the Twincare Professional Outlet in Nelspruit, a destination emporium for all Twincare’s brands of products, furniture and equipment. With the most incredible stock and run by a knowledgeable and passionate team, this was a great way to start the trip. You’ll see more of this store in the next few days when we do a full video report back – stay tuned! From there, I visited Rene at her lovely salon Hair Tech in Streak Street. Rene made a decision some years ago not to open on a Saturday! Impossible for a salon? Actually, no – very possible, and she says her decision has resulted in a better life for herself and her team. We’ll be doing an interview article with Rene in a future Hairnews. From there, it was time to visit a new, destination salon that has opened in Nelspruit thanks to client demand – the Gary Rom franchise. What an incredible salon in the most stunning location. Want to know what it looks like? Well, we’ll be showing you a video tour in the next few weeks. And from there, it was time to go somewhere else different, surprising and beautiful – Cizelle Hair Studio. It’s a salon located in a school, and Cizelle agreed to chat to Hairnews and explain how, and why, she ended up in this location – and what it’s like to run a salon from school premises! Tune in tomorrow to find out where we went on day two in Nelspruit – it really felt like far too short a time spent in such a stunning location.
