- Launch: Hairnews Home Disaster Fixes
The Hairnews team is bringing you a brand new, fun and exciting series in 2018. Hairnews Home Disaster Fixes aims to promote professional hairdressing and drive clients into salons - while giving clients a second chance after making terrible decisions! How it Works Each series, we will advertise on social media for a client who has ruined her hair by trying to do it at home. It’s turned into an expensive disaster and she needs help fast! Hairnews will team up with the closest participating salon in her area, and will make a contribution to the costs of fixing the disaster hair! We’ll ask one of the salon’s retail suppliers to be a homecare angel, providing a set of products to continue the good work. The result? The salon hopefully gains a new, happy client who tells all her friends and spreads the word on social media about how her hair disaster was fixed! Awesome PR for everyone involved, particularly for the salon, and for the professional industry in general! Great hair days and second chances mean happy endings instead of split endings! If you would like to be a participating salon, please email info@hairnews.co.za with your salon name and area, and we will be in touch asap.

Water Saving Tips from Tanaz As Day Zero draws closer for Cape Town, Shelene Shaer, owner of Tanaz in Illovo, offers some advice on how salons can save water and operate in the most responsible way in these challenging times. “I work in Cape Town every six weeks and we can see how dire the shortage is. Our clients get only one wash, and leave in conditioner is used. If your geyser takes a few seconds to heat up, don’t waste the cold water, run it into a bucket and use it to wash the basins out. It really is possible to rinse colour using only one bottle of water! If the colour is properly emulsified and worked out of the hair, it rinses very quickly. We actually plan to take a video of somebody doing this to show it can be done. Should the water restrictions become even more severe, it is likely that Cape Town clients will have to bring their own water to the salon to be used for all their rinsing. Mystery Prize Winner Marlien Onderstall is the lucky winner of our final prize draw... a Kérastase Chromatique gift hamper! Marlien, your prize will be on its way to you next week, and we thank everyone for participating in our fabulous mystery draws!
- The Boredroom Difference
Three years ago, owners Mia and Maritza started The Boredroom, Plein Street, Stellenbosch. Starting from scratch and using their own savings, their vision was to create a trendy place where clients could visit and relax, as well as being professionally pampered. Today, The Boredroom is a fabulous destination with a staff of eight, where clients and friends chat, connect and pop in. What makes The Boredroom so special – at any time of the year? “It’s a very family-focused setup and a chilled vibe. We have a Nespresso machine and a gin bar. People pop in for coffee, gin or a chat, and we welcome anyone who wants to come and use our wi-fi and do some work. Our year end function always includes a few clients who have become part of the family!” And what does The Boredroom do differently over the busy season? There is always someone keeping the team’s spirit’s up so we stay positive. Every day, we bring cupcakes or snacks because food keeps people in a good mood. We have a staff Whatsapp group where we regularly thank everyone for their hard work. What is The Boredroom’s favourite product range? We are a Matrix salon for both colour and retail. It’s affordable, and the results you get on the hair are incredible. My clients are addicted to the Total Results range, especially our students. It is such good value and they adore it. - Colour Change How-To: Transforming Miss Universe
When she won Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters’ hair was very dark. But by the time she won Miss Universe, it was a gorgeous, glowing, multifaceted honey blonde that drew the eye. Unquestionably, this was a winning colour that helped her stand out from the other contestants. This colour change was the vision of talented Leandi Botes from Veaudry Salon, Fourways. Here is the story behind this incredible transformation. “When Demi-Leigh first came to the salon after she had won Miss South Africa, we talked about her goals. At that stage her hair was very dark and I suggested going lighter. I said we would do it in stages so as to ensure optimal condition and also to keep the change gradual since she was in the public eye. Demi-Leigh’s hair is healthy and it grows very fast. It’s all real - she wears no extensions. Original Colour: Dark First: Leandi did a full head of balayage foils, and added natural colour with a colour shampoo for movement, dimension, and health.Smartbond was used to protect hair during bleaching. Second: Demi-Leigh loved this and the following visit, Leandi completed the process, taking the blonde all the way to the root. She concocted her own recipe to tone it to a honey beige blonde. Third: Just before the Miss Universe competition, Leandi added a few extra highlights for additional brightness. Final Colour: Shimmering, multidimensional blonde “I think the colour makes her!” Leandi says. “It was a privilege to work with Demi-Leigh; she is a beautiful person inside and out, and a true inspiration.” Leandi sectioned the hair in a diamond shape so that it would look natural as it grew out. Her toning recipe was: L’Oréal Professionnel Dialight – half 8, half 9.13, with a drop of 7.23 and 6-vol. Mystery Prize Winner Congratulations to Debbie Brown of Pzazz Hair Studio, who has won a fabulous Matrix hamper with the brand new Brass Off range. Enjoy! Our daily mystery giveaways will start up again on 3rd January and we have three prizes still to be won. You can enter the draw now by emailing info@hairnews.co.za or messaging 082 891 8537. Happy New Year to the Industry We’re almost there... and what a December it has been. Almost time to take off your salon clothes, put on your party outfit and celebrate the start of a brand new year – with a stronger rand giving us hope on the horizon and a breathing space. Here’s to a glorious, successful and fulfilling 2018 from the Hairnews team... we’ll catch you on the other side!
- Festive Season Tips from Franco International Sandton
Elani Fox – Manager, Franco International Sandton, explains what fuels this busy salon during the festive season. Stock is the main issue for December... we place bigger orders at the beginning of December, looking at what we used this time last year as a guideline. It’s so important, because if you don’t have stock you can’t do the turnover so you must have enough retail and colour stock to take you through to January. In the salon, we motivate our team as much as we can, keep a positive vibe, and give them the time and days off they need as soon as it’s less busy – we have found the past few years it remains very busy up until after New Year. The festive season is a difficult time of the year, and so our team needs all the support we can give them! Franco International Sandton Decor Tour Do you want to take a look round Franco International’s busy, glamorous interior and see their special copper detailing and amazing use of space?
