What sets Style Bar apart as a salon group? The one important feature that sets Style Bar apart from the rest of the salon groups is its passionate focus and drive for education. Upskilling stylists was the best idea Style Bar as a group could have made for driving a better future. Belinda Liebenberg, who heads up the group’s in-house education, explains more. Q&A With Belinda Liebenberg, Style Bar Group Educator Belinda’s hairdressing career includes educating for major product houses like Schwarzkopf, Indola and Goldwell, working in a London salon, and owning her own salon for 17 years. She travels overseas regularly for continued education on cutting, colouring, and Train The Trainer. “I have been fortunate to have had the best educators and mentors in this industry. There was no end to their dedication and enthusiasm and this influenced my approach to education. Because I know what education has done for me, I cannot stress it enough to everyone. The more knowledge you have, the more confidence you will have. The more confidence and knowledge you have, the more effectively you will communicate,” Belinda says. Q: Tell us more about the Style Bar group and why you chose to join them? As a Schwarzkopf Educator I always trained the Style Bar group in their Training Studio. There was always a huge demand from them for more training but my time did not allow me to offer the group more. When the opportunity came for me to make this move, I already felt part of their team. The vision and mission that Style Bar’s owner, Vittorio, has for the group, made me want to be part of this success story. His business ethics, integrity and relationship with his staff is commendable. Q: What is your role at Style Bar? I head up the Education Department for the group of 11 stores. Having only one group to focus on, means that I can cater for every staff member’s individual needs, offering anything from basic cutting and colour fundamentals for students, to the most advanced cut and colour techniques as well as hands-on barbering seminars. It can all be custom made for each stylist. Q: What is Style Bar’s philosophy towards education? We all know that knowledge is power, but in a struggling economy seminars are costly and it can be difficult to gain the knowledge you need. Being able to offer all our staff any form of training that they require puts them in a very favourable position. Better training means more confident stylists, satisfied customers, the opportunity to sell more services, and a full appointment book with referrals as well as repeat bookings. Where will fashion turn as autumn approaches? Sarah Black from Linton & Mac, UK, a colour expert and the 2017 UK L’Oreal Colour Trophy winner, predicts two stunning trends. Flamingold: A vibrant hybrid of flamingo coral-pink and muted gold, this is the new season’s bolder, punchier and sassier version of the rose gold trend. ‘Flamingold’ should vary in depth and tone throughout the hair, with colour in some areas being vibrant and deep, and in other sections more muted: think more Apricot rose rather than rose gold. Flamingo-pink hair was an Instagram sensation this summer, however Autumn/Winter’s Flamingold hue has an element of warmth and hints of gold and apricot to set it apart. Neon Nights: Pastel shades have had their moment – now it’s time for neon brights. Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wahg, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs all used bright colours in their autumn-winter shows. These look-at-me colours look artificial and fresh from the bottle; and have a punky edge with heaps of attitude. Pre-bleaching is essential and th is kind of shade requires maintenance to prevent colour fade: recommend a protein-based sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to your clients to maintain that level of vibrancy.

Tammy Erasmus had a fantastic experience working on board, and on her return, joined the team at a top Cape Town salon. Q: Tell us about your background and how you applied to work on board? A: I applied in 2015, I had already studied at Stellenbosch Hair Academy and worked for 6 years in a small town in Worcester at Hair Affair. Before my first contract, Steiner requires all applicants to do a training course, getting the basics up to their standards, everything from learning client excellence, to hosting hair shows and basic cosmetology that includes facials and different massages to add to my hairdressing skills. Q: What ship were you placed on? A: My first contract was on the most beautiful ship from Royal Caribbean called Oasis of the Seas, which at that time was the biggest cruise ship in the world, we use to dock at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a 7 day cruise round the Caribbean, including breathtaking destinations such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, Labadee (which was Royal Caribbean's own private island), Cozumel and Cancun in Mexico, and the US Virgin Islands. Q: Tell us about life on board. A: It was the experience of a lifetime, with different cultures and food. The formal nights were my favourite and there were two formal nights on every cruise. Salon life was basically like a hair salon on land, we coloured, cut, blowdried, and did a lot of upstyles. I hosted the hair show in the pamper parties the spa used to offer the guests onboard. We also educated guests on hair and explaining the importance of looking after their hair. We worked extremely hard, but we partied harder! There was a team of about 40 spa therapists including hairstylists, nail techs, personal trainers, medi spa doctors, massage therapists, acupuncture, slimming treatments and teeth whitening. I enjoyed my team and ship, the experience shaped me to want the best in every single service and deliver beyond expectation. I am still in contact with all my friends abroad who are friends for life. Q: Would you recommend working on board ship? A: I urge anyone who wants to travel, make good money and love what they do to consider cruise ship hairdressing. This was truly the experience of a lifetime. You work extremely hard on board but this benefited my career so much. After coming back to South Africa I applied at Scar Hair on Kloof Street and was accepted! This was my dream salon from the time I started out in hairdressing. Q: What did working on board teach you? A: Steiner is exceptionally professional, hair and makeup is still a huge personal expectation for me every morning as you must look your best. I learned to deliver the wow factor in every service I do, and I still consider myself a Steiner, as I am set in my good habits of looking my best, delivering five star service, and being 100% professional at all times.
