  • Men’s Trends: The Contemporary Comb-Over

Jenn Linton and Jay MacDonald, co-directors at Linton & Mac, UK, have identified the contemporary comb-over as a key trend going into autumn. “Forget the bygone connotations of men wishing to disguise a bald patch: the comb-over is back! Already a celeb favourite (George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Justin Timberlake have a lot of love for this look) and looking sexier than ever, the comb-over is a slick trend that combines this season’s hottest parting (the deep side-part) with a retro style. Iconic and stylish, the contemporary comb-over works equally well on medium-length locks and long hair – in fact, the long comb-over was so dominant at Men’s Fashion Week A/W ’18 it’s arguably a trend in its own right. Add a little hold and keep the look slick and suave with a gel wax, or stick to minimal product for a soft and modern finish.”

  • World’s Oldest Barber is 107!

What an amazing story. The New York Times recently reported on the world’s oldest barber – Anthony Mancinelli. At the age of 107 he is still healthy, with good eyesight, all his teeth, and cutting hair full day with more energy than the 20 year olds in his salon, Fantastic Cuts, north of New York City. Anthony’s clientele include grandchildren and great grandchildren of his original clients and he has cut a huge variety of styles in his career, as trends have changed. When he started barbering, people visited barber shops to have warts burned off and leeches applied, as well as for a haircut. Having worked in barbershops since he was 11, Anthony dropped out of high school to cut hair full time. He even keeps a pair of manual hair clippers in his drawer, to use when the power goes out! Read the full story HERE.

Glen Summers From working as a DJ, Glen Summers took up hairdressing after a friend suggested it. He started his career with Carlton Hair, and the rest is history. “My interest in barbering started when i got on the floor as a junior stylist as most of my clientele were males. This was when I saw that gents hairdressing was more my route to go. Barbering to me is such an amazing craft. Today I travel the country as a educator for one of the fastest growing franchises and I get to inspire and nurture up and coming barbers. Shafiek Ganief Shafiek started barbering after his barber joked that he will teach me to become a barber, not knowing that he had cancer and wanted to pass his skills on to someone. He passed his trade test in June 2016, and loves teaching / passing the trade on to young entrepreneurs. His advice to contestants is to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the category you are competing in, understand what the judges are looking for and enjoy! Jody Botma From “butchering” friends and families hair in the back garden when he was 14, Jody progressed in his career, to be accepted into a London salon. Returning to SA, he made men’s hair his speciality. “I love working in the barber shop, a place where your clients often become your friends. Barbering is kicking off massively now in South Africa. I have recently started Barbers of S.A., a platform for barbers to showcase & refine their talents in mens hair. Currently we do educational look and learn sessions in Cape Town and Johannesburg.” Suzaan Saayman Founder of FAME Systems, Qualified Stylist and International Hairdressing Moderator for City and Guilds, Suzaan has 18 years experience in the Hair & Barber industry. Happy clients mean happy stylists, repeat business, and a more gorgeous walking advert for your salon! One of the most frustrating things for any client is having to fight their natural hair structure to get the style they prefer. This is where KMS Style Primers can make all the difference, with super-easy styleability that lasts. According to Sandro Martins of Sandro Hairdressing, top KMS retailer and Salon of the Year winner, "The reason why we have been so loyal to the brand is because of its versatility. The new Style Primers are an example of this. There is no other brand on the market that will give you volume at the root, moisturise your mid-lengths, and eliminate the frizz on the ends! "The products are made in California and with our weather being so similar to California's, it's a no-brainer that the products will work brilliantly in our country," Sandro says.
