  • Theresa Advises: Education vs. Training

In the last 12 months, many salon owners have requested a switch from traditional Education to Training. I have worked in Education for almost three decades and this change in direction got me thinking; what has created the demand for Training, and why the need to switch from Education? To fully understand it, I looked at the differences between the two types of teaching methods: Education is primarily a Show ‘n Tell of a particular cut, technique or trend. It is typically led by an Educator explaining the features and benefits of supporting products. It’s an information-heavy Look ‘n Learn using only two of your five senses: seeing and hearing. As a result, there are no opportunities for you to improve your skills or to try out new techniques. Training, on the other hand, is all about physically taking part in the learning experience. Educator-led sessions include hands-on cutting, colouring or styling. All your senses are at play: touching, seeing, hearing, smelling and yes, sometimes tasting! The dynamic training environment creates an ideal space for you to improve your skills and learn new techniques. All the while, you learn all about the products by simply working with them. The two examples below further illustrate the differences: Example 1: Colour Melt Education teaches you that using shades not more than three depths apart allows for a seamless melt. Training teaches you the important technique of using a wide tooth comb and your fingers to melt the demarcation line between shades. You are required to train as if under the pressure of working in a salon where knowledge of hair texture and hair history, as well as the ability to make suitable product recommendations, is needed. Training makes your skills salon-ready by placing emphasis on the learning of the skill and not on the learning of the theory. Example 2: Balayage Balayage is the most googled hair technique in the world and there are thousands of online “how-to” videos out there. Most include foils and show you how to place them. Education imparts of the information verbally and visually. Having knowledge of how-to and the products needed does not mean that you have skill, let alone an understanding of the technique. Training teaches you the precise craft of hand painting hair using the science of clay lighteners to create a perfect balayage. Honing the skill and mastering the technique, under the guidance of an experienced Educator, takes time and practice. And practice makes perfect! It is clear that the benefits of Training exceed those of Education and I encourage all stylists to repeatedly invest in training, because training is an investment and not an expense. The long-term rewards are undeniable. For information on Training, please visit our website. • Black “Box Colour” transformation by Jadie Professionals, Bloemfontein

We love this incredible transformation (recipe below), but also the clear and strong message from salon owner Jadie Herbst, which is an inspiration to hairstylists and clients alike. Read and enjoy! This transformation took 2 sessions Before sending me a message asking how much this will cost you and if I can do it in 2 sessions for you it’s important to understand NO TWO heads are the same. No journey from black to whatever end result you desire, will be the same as someone else’s. Any transformation like this will take multiple sessions, 2 - 4 at least. You have to be willing to use proper aftercare. You have to be willing to put less heat on your hair. You have to deal with and make peace with the FACT that your hair WILL be warm before it can ever be cool. Not just your hair has red pigment, you don’t have to “warn” me 😜most people have red pigment. There’s no way around it. Only through it. Transformations like this aren’t cheap. Remember when something isn’t in your budget it doesn’t mean it’s expensive, it means you can’t afford it. Skilled people and small business don’t deserve being told they are too expensive, because nobody has the right to decide someone else’s worth How it Was Achieved This took 2 sessions, some skill and a client willing to invest in good aftercare. In the first appointment I took her from black to dark brown. Then gave her a good hair care regime to follow for 10 weeks with professional care, then she came back and I did the second session. In the second session, I did teasyfoils + traditional foils with Wella Blondor and 6% Roots 4/0 +4/07 and 6% Toned with 7/81 and 1.9% She doesn’t want to be any lighter. She had 10 years black box dye and wanted a softer colour but still in the brunette spectrum and she LOVES the warmth. What a day when clients actually love and appreciate warmth !!! • Reasons Why Your Hair Iron NEEDS a Temperature Control

Let’s jump right into it. The days where “one-size-fits-all” solutions are considered to be suitable for a wide range of situations are over! We can’t expect people to be happy with only one option in this day and age anymore. We are spoiled for choice and that is how it should be, especially when it comes to hair irons and temperature control. There is no perfect heat setting to maintain healthy hair as all hair types are different and therefore Veaudry irons have an adjustable temperature control as all hair is unique and allows you to select the heat you need. Veaudry cares about all people, whether you have thick, frizzy, thin or curly hair, whatever your type or texture, we have your back. (or should we say Crowning Glory) Average hair types will use the Veaudry iron on 170°C to 190°C and more fragile hair that is perhaps chemically treated or blonde hair will use the Veaudry iron on as little as 130°C to 150°C. Using it on higher temperatures will damage your fine, chemically, highlighted hair, therefore, you need an iron with adjustable heat settings. People with thick coarse hair can happily set their iron to 210°C for extra assistance when styling their hair. Again, spoiled for choice. Professional hair stylists that do brazilian blowouts or keratin treatments need higher heat options in order to activate the product effectively, thus these chemicals do not work as well on lower temperatures or with irons with only one heat setting, they need temperatures of up to 230°C, as per manufactures guidelines. Ironing fewer times with the correct heat setting = less damage. For example, let’s take a car, we know that there is an average (safe) speed on the road, yet we don’t buy a car that only offers one speed. Also, just because a car has the ability to reach high speeds does not mean we are going to drive at high speeds, we are instead going to adjust the speed to different conditions on the road. Sometimes we will need the high speed to pass a car quick and safe, just as we need the extra heat for thick coarse hair, or more importantly you would drive slowly in poor driving conditions. We can also use an oven to emphasize why you need a Veaudry iron that has an adjustable heat setting but I think you get the picture; all recipes don’t require the same heat! Veaudry puts the power back into your hands to decide what temperature your hair needs in order to get the OPTIMUM result.
