  • Take your vision to the next level: Enter National TrendVision (NTVA) 2020

For decades we’ve been told what’s beautiful, what’s in fashion, and how we should express our individual creativity. The message was: be you- but, not too much. Be you – but, within our constraints. Be you, - but, show only the aspects of yourself we are comfortable with. The last two decades have seen a seismic shift in this type of thinking. It’s seen the rise of communities on the fringes of society, making their voices heard. It’s seen an openness to expression that is dictated by whole communities rather than a self-appointed few. We’ve encouraged and supported our peers in veering off the paths paved by institutions – treading our own, and giving others the freedom to do the same. Today, there’s room for reimagining expression, one driven by the collective; an individualistic outpouring culminating into an authentic masterpiece, rather than one forced, ill-fitting mould. It’s by these principles that we invite you to enter South Africa’s TrendVision Award 2020. This year’s competition redefines what we mean by a trend and shifts the focus to incorporating a collective vision. The competition suggests a trend starts with a vision about the way we see the world and how we express ourselves in that world – and, then becomes significant because of the validation from our community. Colour palette for NTVA 2020 This year, the competition has not dictated a trend for competing hairdressers.Stylists are encouraged to find inspiration in the Hair Language shared by Wella: a predetermined colour palette, and the model’s own beauty and individuality – and then, to create looks that their communities will love and wear. NTVA 2020 further expands its forms of expression to five categories – three of which are editorial Color Artist (live) Color Specialist (live) Craft Artist Photographic Transformation Sebastian Editorial Look SEBMAN Men’s Hair of the Year (Editorial) Join the ranks of the most creative and visionary hair artists. Enter South Africa’s NTVA 2020. Entries are open on Modern Hair & Beauty. Submissions close at 12pm on 26 June 2020. • Signing Up with Steiner: What to Expect in Your Interview

Nadine Brits, recruitment manager for The Onboard Spa South Africa, explains more about what will happen during your interview, and what the timeline of events is likely to be before you embark on the adventure of a lifetime, working as an on board hairstylist on a luxury cruise liner.Embarking on a career at sea is the adventure of a lifetime, but what happens after you complete your nine month contract on board ship? Here are some career options that are available to you. Q: What qualifications must a hairstylist have to be successfully placed on board? A: We accept level 3 and level 4, ITEC, VTCT, CITY AND GUILDS or SETA, and we also accept the Trade qualification. The trade qualification however is not a requirement. Q: How does the interview work? A: The first part of the interview happens in a group setting, which starts off with me doing a full presentation on the company and job description. This is followed by each applicant doing a 5 minute introduction of themselves and telling us about their career so far, as well as their future goals. Q: What does the next part of the interview include? A: The practical part of the interview follows, where they will do a gents and a female hair cut, followed by 2 blow dries. My focus as a recruitment manager is on how employable the applicant is in terms of their skill and their customer care. Q: What happens after a hairstylist passes the interview? A: Once an interview is passed, the applicants are then able to choose a suitable date to join the company training which takes place at our academy in Cape Town. The duration of the training is 10 days. And receiving the placement on your first ship can happen any time from one day after training to three weeks after training. Then you head off to sea for an unforgettable experience where you will travel the world, make lifetime friends, and earn tax-free income while doing the job you love! Does this sound like the opportunity for you? • Dramatic Makeover Goes Dark: by Stefan Ellis, Colour Lab Hair Studio, George

It’s back to basics for a client transitioning from blonde, to a stunning dark plum brown, performed by Stefan at Colour Lab Hair Studio in George. Here’s the hair history and how this beautiful result was achieved: Hair history: Natural level 8. Hair has been bleached for more than 10 years. So the client’s hair was very damaged and over processed. The ends were very broken and dry. Before we can colour the hair we need to fill it with its naturally occurring pigment. That is the pigment that’s exposed when lifting the hair. In this case the desired shade is 2.22. So we will have to fill the hair with red orange. I chose to pre pigment with 3.3 and 5.66. (2:1). And then 3%. I didn’t want to lift her hair as there is nothing to lift. Lol. So 3% is enough. You just want to deposit colour. After rinsing and drying I applied 2.22 and 3.0 (1:1) with 6% on the roots for 10 min. Then applied the colour to the rest of the hair. Overstating it so it can absorb as much of the colour as it can. I left that for another 20 min and rinsed. Then I applied Olaplex no. 2 to the hair and left that in for 30 min with a cap on to absorb into the hair. Every step of the service was done with Olaplex to ensure that all the lost, broken bonds get mended back together again, ensuring the health and integrity of the hair. And voila!
