Stylists of Mzansi, did life just show us who is really in charge? Just over a month ago we were looking forward to the months ahead with great optimism. We were on course to have one of our best educational years yet, full of packed classes and new opportunity. Enter COVID-19. Practically overnight, things changed. So, we must change. We are in a period of dramatic shift, there is no doubt about it, and with the dramatic shift have come such incredible stories of people helping each other, finding ways of inspiring and motivating one another and many other great initiatives. Hairstylists live to be with their clients, and with social distancing in full effect, we know your spirits will be low. That is why we want to invite you to join Wella education online. - Important Car Care Tips During Lockdown
Looking after your car - Extended Parking During Lockdown Things to know first: 1. All modern vehicles have some kind of battery parasitic load while parked, viz. some clock, security system, or other electronics in a low-power state. 2. Parked tyres discharge air to the surrounding atmosphere due to a natural process of diffusion. 3. Resting on the same footprint for days on end, vehicle tyres with a load on (the more than 1-ton of mass that is your vehicle) will develop flatspots. 4. A fuel pump resting in static fuel for extended periods can actually be damaged by the chemistry of the same fuel (most fuel pumps are immersed in the fuel tank) - I once paid dearly for this on my motorcycle. Therefore, my advice is: 1. Depending on the remaining lifespan of your battery, start your car every 2nd to 3rd day. If vehicle is parked in garage, open the garage doors to ventilate the noxious exhaust gases. Remember, a modern vehicle with multiple mini-computers viz. PCM/ECM, BCM, TCM and other sub-computers, can sometimes not take kindly to jump-starting. 2. If you have a portable compressor in your vehicle, pump your tyres up a bit beyond normal specification to negate air volume loss stated in 1 above on the problem statement up to the maximum pressure the tyre can be pumped to imprinted on the tyre sidewall. I'm assuming you are in a situation where you cannot lift your vehicle up on trestles. Naturally, the day lockdown is lifted, one of the first things you will do is check your tyre pressures for driving. 3. Move your vehicle about a bit, to rotate the tyre footprint. 4. Point 4 on the problem statement will automatically be taken care of by proposal 1 above here. The above does not necessarily come from any manual or book, but merely observations I have made from my rather intimate relationship with motor-cars over the years.

- Cruise Ship Careers: My Life on Board by Lushe Carstens
Lushe Carstens recently completed a contract on board with Steiner (now known as London Wellness Academy) and plans to return to the ships as soon as they are back in operation and sailing again. Here is an interview with Lushe about her experiences on board. Q: What ship have you recently been on? A: I was on RCCL Empress OTS, sailing around the Caribbean, mainly Cuba, Havana and Mexico. Q: What made you decide to apply to work for The Onboard Spa? A: I applied to work onboard as it gave me the opportunity to do what I love most which is being a Hairstylist and getting to see places which I would otherwise never have been able to see. Q: What were your salon hours? A: The salon hours were usually from 7:30 am until 9:30 pm, with breaks for lunch and dinner. You get days off and time off during the week. Q: What was your onboard salon like and what were the most popular services? A: The onboard salon was beautiful. We had the best view looking out onto the ocean and watching sea life appear next to the ship. The most popular hair services were definitely blow outs and curls, as well as haircuts. Q: What has your best experience been so far? A: Meeting the crew members and being surrounded with such positive people. And exploring on my days off, to see new places and meet people from different cultures. I can’t wait to sign up for another contract and see more of the world. Q: What has your biggest learning curve been? A: My biggest learning curve was being on my own. If you haven’t found yourself as a person this is definitely a way of discovering your inner person. You learn a lot when you need to adjust to new environments. Q: Do you feel that your experience on board has enhanced your skills and grown you as a person? A: Definitely. On board, you learn new skills all the time, and because you work with so many different guests you learn a lot of new styles and trends. I will honestly say when I joined the first time I was scared and extremely nervous. But after what I have learned and how my personality has changed, I would never change this experience for anything in the world. Would you like to have the adventure of a lifetime, seeing new places, working in the career you love, and earning tax-free? Although the ships are not sailing, interviews are still being done and you can get on the waiting list for when they are operating again! - Styles: Living Cool Hare, by Bryson & Hare, Scotland
This debut collection by Cheryl Bryson took inspiration from the seventies and denim fabric. “I researched the process of denim, how it is woven from cotton, sewing, and its dyeing process. Because it’s made from cotton, a natural product, this reminded me of how we colour hair. The woven fabric and how it is cut, is how I see hair. I wanted the hair itself to tell its own hip adventures. I wanted frayed edges and worn textures, achieving this with razor cutting.” By Cheryl Bryson @ Bryson & Hare, Scotland.
