  • Get the Look: Making Waves by Cos Sakkas

Making Waves by Cos Sakkas Kate Moss inspired, this shoulder length, loose textured hair with an overhanging fringe is the perfect style for summer. INSPIRATION: Taken from the classic finger waves that have been used in different ways at Fashion Week. Pushing finger waves to a modern way creating a contrast of shiny to dry textures using clips to accessorise and keep the shape flat. KEY ELEMENTS: The knowledge of classic finger waves is essential as this will give you the understanding of dressing any kind of waves and also gives you the confidence to push this to a more modern result. STEP BY STEP: 1 Take a central profile parting with a pin tail comb. 2 Apply gel from the roots to the mid-lengths of the hair. 3 Combing hair at a natural fall, place finger parallel to the parting in an equal distance and direct the hair in between the fingers in a forward and back direction, alternating a finger wave technique. 4 Apply label.m Hold and Gloss Spray to the end of the back area of the hair and create a knot in the middle of the length. 5 The entire head is diffused and left to cool down. 6 The knot is removed and a nice distressed texture should appear, decorating the side behind the ear with clips or accessories to get a flatter and more modern feel. • Is Hair Loss Affecting Your Lockdown Clients? Solutions You Can Offer

The percentage of male and female clients affected by hair loss and thinning hair has increased over the past decades, due to many factors – diet, stress, pollution, hormonal hair loss, medications and more. We have noticed that during lockdown a significant number of people have been complaining about hair loss and that they have noticed it occurring – or recurring – where it was not a problem pre-lockdown. Two factors are going to have an increased effect on your clients’ hair growth in the post-coronavirus future – stress and illness. It is important that you make clients aware of the fact that stress can cause hair loss. This is particularly important if your clients are doing something different with their hair – such as applying a home care kit you have provided for them to refresh their colour! You cannot physically consult with them and therefore will not be able to pick up the first signs of thinning hair beforehand. You do not want a client who is losing hair as a result of their stressed-out condition, to worry that the home colour kit contributed to hair loss. Therefore, we recommend that you get in touch with ALL your clients and question them about whether they have noticed additional hair being lost when they brush or wash their hair, whether their hair feels thinner than usual, and whether they are noticing any changes in density when they style it. More About Stress Related Hair Loss Stress is a major cause of hair loss. This hair loss won’t be noticed immediately at the onset of a stressful situation, but becomes apparent about three months down the line as the body reacts to ongoing stress. Stress can push more of the hair into the “resting phase” so that hair seems to grow more slowly, and then larger amounts of hair are lost all at once, so your client has the additional stress of noticing a lot of her hair falling out. This is known as telogen effluvium and results in thinner hair throughout the head, often more noticeable in certain areas such as the crown of the head. Another stress-related cause of hair loss is alopecia areata, where stress triggers an autoimmune reaction causing your body to attack its own hair follicles. This results in patches of complete hair loss visible on the head. Hair will usually grow back once the stress has subsided but further stress may cause further hair loss. More About Illness Related Hair Loss: Coronavirus There are numerous illnesses and medications that contribute to hair loss – however a number of people that have suffered from coronavirus have experienced hair loss and poor hair growth during or after their illness. Because coronavirus commonly affects the lungs and can affect oxygen levels in the body, it will impact upon hair growth speed and patterns, especially if the illness is prolonged or if the client is very ill and/or hospitalised. Be aware that your coronavirus-affected clients may suffer from hair loss and may require some help from you in regrowing their hair. What You Can Offer There are numerous, effective, professional remedies to help fight hair loss and if your client is affected, he or she should start using these remedies as soon as possible. If you are not yet certified to deliver products in Level 4, get in touch with your preferred supplier who will probably be able to ship to your clients direct, while you receive a portion of the sales prices, or sign up to Salon Products on www.salonproduct.co.za and your client can order hair loss products through you. • Five Fascinating Facts about Cruise Ship Hairdressing

Cruise ships are anchored while we ride out the Covid-19 storm, but they will be back, bigger and better than ever! This is your chance to find out more about what might truly be the opportunity of a lifetime for you! Fact 1: You can join ships at any age above 18, no upper age limit This is the most fabulous fascinating fact about cruise ship hairdressing. There is no age limit, and all you require is your NQF Level 4 as a younger hairdresser – the hours towards your Trade Test can be logged on board. For mature hairdressers, there are stylists in their 50s and 60s signing up and having the most incredible adventure, and your experience will be a huge advantage on board. So don’t let age or mileage hold you back from ticking this bucket list experience. Fact 2: Your earnings are tax free, and accommodation and meals are paid While you do work hard aboard ship – make no mistake – this gives you all the more time to live your best life in the gorgeous salon with a seascape view, that is a short elevator ride away! Putting heart and enthusiasm in your work will mean you are richly rewarded through your commission and tips, and you can earn a substantial sum while having virtually no living expenses. With your accommodation and delicious meals paid for, you can save, or splash out on sightseeing adventures on your days off. Your working hours include two hour-long breaks for lunch and supper, and you receive a day and a half off per week, and if you reach your targets, more time off is an incentive you can earn. Fact 3: You will sail in a sought-after location with an incredible amount to see and do Cruise ships sail on the routes where everyone dreams of going. In your first contract no matter what ship you are allocated to, you will be assigned to a ship that sails in seas, and visits ports, where people dream of going. Your photo opportunities will be legendary and because the routes repeat, you will be able to pick your must-see locations and book your days off accordingly. You will have unforgettable experiences while making lifelong friends in your fellow crew members and your clients. Fact 4: The experience will supercharge you as a hairstylist Because this is such an intensive experience and you are dealing with such a wide spectrum of ever-changing clients with high expectations, you will become supercharged as a hairstylist and will find you operate on another level, in terms of your skill, speed, work ethic, attitude and communication. This makes it far easier to walk into a dream job at the end of your time on board and opens international doors as well as top local salon doors to you. Fact 5: Cruise ships are still interviewing during lockdown Although the landscape is different at present, the London Wellness Academy is still conducting interviews, ready to meet the huge demand when ships sail again. Having a confidential interview during lockdown will allow you to ask any questions and hopefully to join the waiting list and be first on board when ships are back in the waters. End with contact details email etc. If you would like to find out more, sign up now for your confidential interview HERE. Alternatively, email Nadine Brits on nadineb@londonwellnessacademy.com and she will answer any questions you have.
