  • Behindthechair.com Focuses on Mental Health Tools for Hairdressers

The USA site Behindthechair.com recently published a very helpful article on mental health techniques to help hairdressers who are living with constant stress and uncertainty, as well as suffering the financial impacts of not working. Here are some helpful techniques that you can use to cope during these difficult times, and help adjust your mindset and thinking so that you are in a better, more positive and more constructive head space. Thank you to Behindthechair.com for publishing these very valuable coping strategies. Watch the VIDEO for helpful insight, tools and strategies! 1. Recognize your current reality. Three things people fear the most: Being isolated. Being out of control. Looking at an unpredictable future. Right now we are facing all of these fears—some days are filled with hope and optimism, and others with fear and uncertainty. “There has never been a more trying time and a more beautiful opportunity for us to reconnect to who we are becoming as humanity,” shares Miles. Remember this: This stress is a normal response, says Miles. We don’t heal what we don’t feel. 2. Value yourself as a person, not just your profession. “We sacrifice a lot for the sake of our self esteem,” shares Mary. “So much of our self worth is built into our work—built into giving, helping and taking care of other people, and you can’t do that right now.” “We are human beings, not humans doing,” adds Miles. Ask yourself, am I really okay? “True artists are empaths, who have a way of opening up the door for people to offer their pain,” shares Miles. “You’re not trained to know what to do with that pain.” “You now have moments where you are quiet, and this can be scary, but these are moments where you can take stock of who you are and ask these bigger questions,” adds Mary. “If you realize you aren’t okay, you can acknowledge that.” 3. Reconnect with yourself. Connection is the ability to be seen, heard and valued. You already do this every day for the people who sit in your chair—try it for yourself with this excercise. You have the opportunity to own your reality. Grab a journal and take inventory with a self assessment. See what you’re willing to own about your reality without any shame. Find one safe person to share it with who will not try to advise you, but sit with you and connect. Remember: “Don’t forget that you’re allowed to not be okay,” shares Mary. “When you can say you’re not okay, your vulnerability gives you humanity and allows to develop closer relationships with people.”

Dear EOHCB Members & Industry, Subsequent to previous communication from the EOHCB, providing Government with a deadline of Monday, 9 June 2020, at 12h00, we confirm that Government has failed to publish the Sector-specific Regulations for the Personal Care Sector under Alert Level 3 and did not respond before or by 12h00. This failure and disregard from Government, has left the EOHCB with no alternative but to mandate its attorney to draft an urgent application to re-open the Personal Care Sector, which will be lodged with the High Court, citing all relevant Ministers of the National COVID Command Commission. Once the application has been made, we will update members with the detail and court date. Kind Regards, The EOHCB Team. You might also enjoy... Progress Update on Steps to Reopening from Bargaining Council, UASA The Union and EOHCB Bernadine Malan: Virtual Trend and Inspiration Seminar on Thursday 11 June Free Reopening Toolkit for Hair and Beauty Salons to Use as Guidance

  • Progress Update on Steps to Reopening from Bargaining Council, UASA The Union and EOHCB

On the 27th of March 2020, the country went into a national lockdown. This brought about an unprecedented situation where, most businesses, including establishments in the Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry were forced to close their doors for business. Most employers could not conduct business and as a result, were unable to pay salaries to their employees. On the 1st of May 2020 and under alert level 4, a limited number of permitted businesses were allowed to resume their activities. On the 1st of June 2020 and under alert level 3, almost all of the remaining businesses were allowed to open their doors for business supplying products such as shampoo, etc. Unfortunately, the Industry was not allowed to return to the workplace. This is still the situation. The National Bargaining Council for the Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry and the parties thereto, the Employers Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty (EOHCB) and UASA - The Union, have been hard at work by being constantly engaged in a consultative process with Government, through various channels including FEDUSA, BUSA and Business for South Africa (B4SA) since the latter part of alert level 5 in an attempt to ensure that Hairdressing, Beauty and related services resume as soon as possible. Shortly prior to the implementation of alert level 4, the Council and the official parties thereto submitted an 87 page motivation and a sector based Risk Adjusted approach to both the Command Council and Minister of Trade and Industry appealing that the rendering of Hairdressing, Beauty and related services should resume. Although the Council and the parties thereto held the opinion that the hardship suffered by persons in the Industry outweighed the hardship suffered by persons in other industries based on the demographics of the Industry, the Council and the parties realised that it would be extremely difficult if not outright impossible to persuade the Command Council to revisit its decision, given the fact that very few other industries were allowed to return to the workplace, under alert level 4. As a result of the limited number of businesses being allowed to operate under alert level 4, Council and the parties concluded that even if it resorted to drastic measures such as legal action, there would be no chances of success. This view was confirmed when the High Court in Cape Town on the 28th of May 2020 dismissed an application by an advocate, Carlo Viljoen that launched an application in his personal capacity under alert level 4, praying for an order that hairdressers return to the workplace. On the 22nd of May 2020 Government indicated that alert level 3 would be implemented as from the 1st of June 2020. It was mentioned that most businesses would be allowed to reopen. Council and the official parties submitted further documentation on behalf of the formal sector in the form of an undertaking to Government, outlining the health protocols and guidelines that would be followed to ensure the safety of both persons rendering the personal care services and their customers, in an attempt to move Government into allowing Hairdressing, Beauty and related services to resume. This document was also accompanied by a video detailing the manner in which the protocols would be executed to enable Government to form a better understanding thereof. Once again, and to the utter disappointment of the Council and the parties, Hairdressing, Beauty and related services were not allowed when the directives for alert level 3 were published on the 28th of May 2020. However, the regulations expressly provided for certain personal care services to be introduced, subject to the development and implementation of health protocols. The Council and the parties realised that this was the opportunity to ensure the return of Hairdressing, Beauty and related service. The Council and the parties have been working relentlessly on presentation relating to the protocols to secure the return of personal care services on various forums and Ministerial Departments. Great successes have been achieved in that indication was given by Government that it is in the final stages of finalising health protocols for the Industry that will be critical to the prevention of the spread of COVID-19. Once these protocols have been finalised, Government will allow Hairdressing, Beauty and related services to resume. This was done by way of interactive and constructive processes without the necessity of becoming embroiled in any legal contest. Although the Industry has been severely affected by the consequences of the lockdown and not being able to operate for more than 2 months, everything possible is being done to ensure that personal care services resume at the first possible opportunity thereby, as far as possible mitigating the economic hardship suffered. For any enquiries please contact the Bargaining Council at accounts@hcsbc.co.za, UASA – The Union at (011) 472 3600 or EOHCB at info@eohcb.com. You might also enjoy... • EOHCB Gives Government Till Close of Business Monday to Respond with Opening Protocols

Industry Update From EOHCB on 6 June The EOHCB was looking forward to the relevant department publishing the Industry health protocols on the afternoon of 5th June 2020, which would have led to personal care services being reintroduced under alert level 3. To the EOHCB's utter dismay, the department's self-invoked deadline was not kept. The EOHCB has, as a result, instructed its lawyers to immediately dispatch a letter to the Director-General of the department, calling for a response by close of business on Monday, to enable the EOHCB to consider its position going forward. Hairnews will update as soon as Government has responded. Please follow the EOHCB National FACEBOOK page for the latest official statements. Thank you to EOHCB for your ongoing swift action and making it clear to Government that any delay is unacceptable! You might also enjoy... • Open Letter to the Hair and Beauty Industry by Lilene Pelser

We are grateful to the iconic Lilene Pelser, National Business Coach for Joico SA, for this wonderful open letter. Thank you for your leadership, positivity and kindness which provide a beacon of light in these challenging times. OPEN LETTER TO THE HAIR AND BEAUTY INDUSTRY Dear friends I feel I want to share this personal message to each and every beautiful individual in our Industry. My message comes from a place of Love, Kindness and Passion for this trade that I have been working in for nearly 34 years. I feel I want to remind all of us (and I include myself in all of this) about the word Mindfulness. The general definition would be: “a state of being conscious or aware of something. A mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings and thoughts.” We should all keep in mind that we are all human, with a different set of coping mechanisms, triggers, motivators, belief systems, values, standards and our own way of dealing with stressful situations. We cannot compare our own specific situation to anyone else’s, it would be gravely unfair. We all are completely aware of this huge challenge that we are currently facing, during which we need to remind ourselves that we are all in this TOGETHER. The complete Hair and Beauty trade are greatly affected by this lockdown and limitations we are facing to conduct our businesses. We need to regroup and refocus on how we conduct ourselves during this extremely stressful time and that the bigger picture to be kept in mind would be, to work together to enable us to celebrate the Re'-opening of our Industry as soon as possible and to keep being inspirational during all of this! I believe that all attempts are well intended and that we are grateful to everyone and anyone in their deliberations for our Trade to reopen. To attack, blame, debunk and destroy certain “team members/colleagues/institutions” in our trade will serve no one and only creates division at this point. Again I say let us practise Mindfulness to the next person, irrelevant if their viewpoint might be different to mine, each of us have a right to our own opinion, feelings and how we manage ourselves within our different situations. Yes, it is a great challenge to keep the level of frustration low key, stay calm and stay patient while we can feel, and see the destruction this has caused in our Industry. I believe, once again we have been reminded during all this hardship, in what great demand we as people and our services are in our beautiful Industry! My request to all today would be this, let us conduct ourselves with pride, professionalism, integrity in tact and show a degree of sensitivity, mutual respect, understanding, kindness and MINDFULNESS to everyone on all different platforms. I wish you all Abundance, Love and Light and to stay safe With much love Lilene You might also enjoy...
