- Gratitude – Keep the Career Passion Burning
By AHP Staff We all experience days when we wake up on the wrong side of the bed, and for no particular reason, we just feel cranky. The best way to change a grumpy mood fast is to start counting your blessings. After all, you are part of an incredible industry. Gratitude is the fuel that will keep your passion of being a hairdresser or barber alive. Here are six reasons to be grateful you chose a career in the beauty industry. You’re an artist. As a hairstylist or barber, you create amazing works of walking art every single day. Using your creativity, you can flex your creative muscles, and you actually get paid for creating art! Each client, each day, brings new opportunities to use your talent and skills. You’re never bored as no two days (or clients) are ever the same. You’re living your dream AND paying your bills. How sweet is that? Opportunities abound. There are limitless opportunities within your career. You can travel the world, work for a brand, be an educator, or become a salon or barber shop owner. If you work independently, you can be your own boss, set your own hours, have a flexible schedule. You have the unique opportunity to determine how much money you’ll make depending on how much you want to work. You will always be able to use your craft, no matter where you are. That’s not just job security—it’s FREEDOM! It’s scientific. Every hair creation is possible because hairdressing and barbering is based on scientific principles such as geometry, the color wheel, and chemical reactions. Professional hairstyling doesn’t happen by chance. When you were in school, you learned the science behind hairdressing that helps you determine precisely how to create the look your clients want and innovate new styles. If you give a haircut or apply color and it doesn’t turn out the way you planned, you might have miscalculated the science. But you also have the power to fix it. You are in control of your education and researching the science to make it right in the future. You have constant inspiration. Because the beauty industry involves people, it's an industry that is always evolving, changing, and growing. To stay inspired, attend a class, event, or trade show. Learn about new products, new techniques, new formulas. Network with other professionals to share experiences and expand your personal growth. There is never time to become bored or stagnant because there is always something new to learn or try! “If I am reincarnated, I want to be a hairdresser again because I love this passionate profession. It’s artistry. It’s scientific. It’s love. It’s people.” —Farouk Shami You have purpose. It’s so sad when someone has to go to work each day doing something they’re not passionate about, or feel doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things. What are most people looking to find through their job? What do people value most in a career? Purpose. We all want to feel we are making a difference in some way. There are very few professions that can offer a fulfilling, meaningful purpose multiple times, every single day. Hairdressers and barbers are fortunate enough to have physical confirmation of the difference they’re making in people’s lives with each client. You are not only creative artists, but you are also counselors, therapists, confidants, sounding boards, shoulders to lean on, and self-esteem boosters. The positive impact you have on your clients and the love you spread should brighten your day and dispel even the crankiest of moods! You love your people. This brings us to what is probably the most important reason you love being a hairdresser or barber: The people. YOUR people! The relationships you have with your clients fill a special place in your heart. Each one is unique and beautiful in their own way. The connections you’ve been able to form with these amazing humans should evoke over-the-top gratitude for the career you’ve chosen. You've watched relationships evolve from first dates to having their first child. You've seen shy, young pre-teens grow into stunning, confident adults. You've been a safe place to cry when they’re experiencing heartache. You've shared tears of laughter with them. All of these moments are the reasons why you love what you do. Yes, we love our people, but that doesn’t just mean clients. It means other hairdressers, too. We’re talking mentors, coworkers, and employers who become family. We are kindred spirits brought together by our passion for this amazing industry. We have so much to be grateful for as hairstylists and barbers. Sure, there are always some areas of our career we may wish were different. But if you focus your mind on all you have in this profession to be grateful for, your passion will never simmer. “Hairdressers are a wonderful breed. You work one-on-one with another human being, and the object is to make them feel so much better, and to look at themselves with a twinkle in their eye.” —Vidal Sassoon Article courtesy Associated Hair Professionals

SLICK SALON SOLUTIONS has for 10 Years now, been a leader in driving new solutions into the SALON SPACE. Isn’t it time you put this brand in your salon and space, and start to enjoy the additional revenue stream your business has been waiting for? Rechelle from MotherKind explains “Why MOTHERKIND collagen?” Some things get better with age… unfortunately our body’s ability to produce enough collagen does not. Brittle nails, thinning hair and dull skin are all tell-tale signs that our bodies need a little help from the inside. Our youthful glow starts to fade as our ageing bodies naturally produces less and less collagen, as a result we start to experience achy joints, weak muscles, along with less lustrous-looking hair and dull skin. Motherkind Collagen is advanced in helping to replenish this important protein source and vital building block our bodies need. Make sure you are putting the right type of collagen into your body. Motherkind has proven itself time and time again with its advanced collagen peptides. Over and above our clinical trials and scientific proof, Motherkind has proven to be the no. 1 choice by thousands of happy clients with success stories. “Let’s restore that glow from within with the best.” We have asked our Top Partners about their journey so far with MOTHERKIND and SLICK and how it has impacted their business, with more profit in their tills. We would love to share your story with many and the journey MOTHERKIND can give your Salon. Nicole – Franco International Franco international has been a leading hair salon group for over 50 years. - Vaccination South Africa – Why is it Important to You?
Guest post by Mark Timms of Mark Adrian Hair Design, written in support of the Industry Vaccination campaign. As part of the Covid-awareness information discussion, we’ve asked for your thoughts and real life stories of what you’ve experienced with covid in your life or in the industry, and why the vaccine is so important to you in your life. A well-respected voice in the South African hair industry, Mark Timms has owned Mark Adrian Hair Design in Cape Town for over 20 years and is still passionate about hair. He feels very positively about the South African vaccination programme and describes his journey. Safety protocols in the salon and vaccinations ensure confidence in everyone’s minds. Thank you for inviting me to share my views on Covid. I have very strong views with regards to the health and safety of our team, friends, and family. The salon is sanitised constantly but I believe that a quick spray of the workstation, chair and basin between clients is not enough. We atomise the air in the salon. We have had over 4000 clients visit us without one calling to say they could have contracted Covid at the salon. We literally walk through the salon spraying sanitiser up towards the ceiling for the ultimate protection. There is no way that we haven’t had clients with covid visit the salon, so I am convinced that this has kept us safe. I am in the fortunate situation that my team are soon to have their second vaccination and recognize that this will save their lives. I have completed the process with pride and even psychologically feel shielded but not immune moving forward. The real truth of covid – Groote Schuur Now for the real truth. I have a client that works at Groote Schuur. He has worked there in a senior position for over twenty years. You might have heard him interviewed on Cape Talk pleading with people to vaccinate. He too suffered from covid after being vaccinated and months later is left with an irritating constant cough. The news he shared was astounding. Of the last 1300 patients admitted to the covid ward, not one had been vaccinated. Not one! And over 100 were using ivermectin when admitted. I want to shout from the roof tops: STATISTICS DON’T LIE. There will always be those that follow the dangerous route, have a fear of needles, believe the conspiracy theories, or just can’t be bothered. My own sister-in-law said she would never have it until her father-in-law and mother-in-law were intubated and survived but sadly were left severely traumatized by the horrendous ordeal. A shocking reality shared by my client is that this is like nothing he’s seen before. The autopsy on a covid lung revealed how the lungs were filled with a type of slime not phlegm leading to a form of drowning. Yes, a gruesome description but the message has to get through to those who will ultimately get covid themselves or are sure to pass it on to some innocent party that took the time to protect others. The Union, Bargaining Council and Employers’ association must band together and make vaccinations mandatory. We are within 30 centimeters of clients all day long. Every day we walk into the salon unvaccinated we have the potential to kill or be killed. Are you willing to take that chance? I personally will not employ anyone without the proof of vaccination. To an anti-vaxxer, this would be harsh and unacceptable, and they would be shouting profanities at me through the screen right now. I am usually very upbeat yet find myself quite exhausted as I prepared this message. Stay safe and celebrate love, life, family, and friends x • • • • • • • • • • • We’ve asked some of our top professionals in the industry to share their thoughts with us and each week we’ll be sharing their stories for you to enjoy. If you have a positive experience you’d like to share with us on the vaccine and the differences it’s made in your personal life or your salon and with your clients’ appreciation of their salon experiences, please send to Beth at beth@hairnews.co.za, with a photo you’d like us to use! - Exclusive Interview with L'Oréal Style & Colour Trophy Winner Shelene Shaer
Exclusive interview on her inspiration and winning formula! The L'Oréal Style & Colour Trophy was held this year in a brand new, super-safe, Covid-protocol-friendly format at Raeesa International in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. The inspirational theme, French Balayage, is topical and relevant to salons, and the judging process assessed all aspects of the technical work, the application, the end result, and the commercial effect. In first place, Shelene Shaer from Tanaz Hair. Hairnews interviewed Shelene this week to explore her ideas, her formula and her inspiration. Q1: What excited you the most about the theme for this year’s Colour Trophy, French Balayage, and why did you enter? Balayage is my speciality and the reason I love it is that it is a form of art. There is so much thought that goes into the placement and this gives the hair a more organic look. In today’s world where time and money are a problem this technique allows you to make the most of a hairstyle. It makes a colour that can be quite strong and bold look incredibly natural because of the way it flows softly from the roots to the ends. Pictured above: @minkimcolorist @sheleneshaer Q2: What inspired your chosen balayage look? I was inspired by Paris In Autumn, Expresso, Baguette, Croissants and all the shades of gold, cream, and champignons. For the competition I wanted to break away from the traditional blondes that are being created and I wanted to show people that you can get beautiful cool/warm tones that work with any shade of natural hair. Pictured above: @hiltonsophia @sheleneshaer Q3: What colours did you use? Please share the formulas and techniques you used, and why you used them? Step One: I prepped the hair with Metal detox and then sectioned the hair. Step Two: I mixed my four formulas: 1. Dia Richesse 4.15 and 9vol (to create depth at the root areas and in the “V” of my Balayage area.) 2. Studio 8 with Bonder inside Ratio 1 + 2 with 20vol. (For areas where I need slower clean lift) 3. Studio 8 with Bonder inside Ratio 1 + 2 with 30vol. (For areas where I needed more control ) 4. Studio 8 with Bonder inside Ratio 1 + 3 with 30vol. (For areas where I needed more saturation) Step Three: Application Nape Area: I applied my 20vol formula here. The reason for this is the slower lift buys me time as I work around the head. I used a mixture of fine weaving and some “teasy” lights all applied in a French Balayage motion to get a clean blended flow. My sectioning is all in triangular placements allowing continual negative space to build into the colour. Occipital area: I used a typical Balayage application using my 1-2 ratio with 30 vol roots to just past mid length, and 1-3 ratio on the ends for saturation. In the alternate V’s and W’s I used the Dia Richess 4.15 and a marrying blend technique to connect the colour with the Blondor 8. Crown and Top area: used the “teasy” method to increase the shadow and blend using Blondor and 20vol. (We wanted to retain the warmth in this area) Temple, Parietal Ridge & Hairline: All these areas below the crown needed more lift so were encapsulated in foil. I started with Blondor and 20vol 1 + 2. The Money Piece: I used Blondor with 30vol 1+2. As I moved diagonally in towards the crown and back, I did Balayage with Blondor 30vol 1+2 and saturated the ends with Blondor 30vol 1 + 3. Step 4: By the time I had applied to the front area, the back was ready to rinse and it was time to start the glossing process in the back. Purposefully I have undercoats ranging from 6 to 8 levels. I wanted this so I could achieve a variety of colours. (cooler on the underneath and around the face and warmer on the two areas.) I used a colour melt technique for my French browns. 1. Dia Richesse 4.15 9vol 2. Dia Richesse 6.12 9vol 3. Dia Light 8.11 (2 parts) 10.12 (1 part) 9vol Applied 4.15 to the root area followed by the Dia Light mixture on the ends and then used the 6.12 midshaft to colour melt. I processed the toner for about 15 mins. Step 5: Back to the basins to rinse the toner at the back and the remaining Balayage. Step 6: Pro Tip I resprayed Metal Detox and did the top colour melt as per step 5. This took me about 10 minutes and then I did a quick blend with the remaining Dia Light over all the hair for an extreme gloss to my French Balayage. Step 7: Shampoo with Metal Detox Care followed by the Metal Detox Mask. Step 8: Styling I used L'Oréal Professionnel série Expert Blow Dry Fluidifier. Finished with Infinium Extreme Hairspray and Liss Control Plus Pictured above: @matthewstylist @sheleneshaer @nadicci @thewallgroup Q4: What was it like participating in such a different competition with Covid protocols in place? We have been practicing these protocols with clients and the setup was no different to how we function in the salon. The complexity of the competition was that it was filmed and that took focus from a time point of view, that I would usually use to focus on my work. Q5: Talking of Covid, how have you found the salon ownership journey has changed over the past year and a half, and how has lockdown affected your business? We decided to experience Covid with a positive attitude and came up with the following slogan Courage Opportunity Vision Inspiration/Initiative/Innovation Determination/Direction/Dream & Drive It is an attitude we have decided on. We are resilient, innovative, adaptable, flexible and strive for perfection as I have a solid team backing me. It takes a lot of work and dedication, I also have a 28 year old partnership with Richard and together we support each other in the business to always make it work, and we can get through everything and anything. We are still taking it all in, however it has been an amazing experience for the team. We spent weeks building up to the competition, trying new colours and techniques and working with clients, which was very inspirational. Q7: What do you feel the next year will bring and how are you planning for the future at Tanaz? The sky is the limit in a changing world and we are all about innovating ourselves. We would love to inspire all young stylists to keep learning, take pride in education and make themselves available to accept any opportunity, to expand your knowledge and never stop learning. Pictured above: @sheleneshaer @trevorsorbie Q8: What advice can you pass on to other stylists who would love to win a major competition one day? What are your hints and tips for success? Trust your instinct, never stop learning. Education is key and your team support is the cornerstone to winning. Take hold of all opportunities, for example, attending courses. - EOHCB: Sick Leave & Valid Medical Certificate
What constitutes a valid medical certificate for purposes of sick leave? In terms of the rules of the Sick Pay Fund of the National Bargaining Council for Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Skincare, and Beauty Industry, an employer may grant paid sick leave where an employee has been absent for one (1) or more consecutive day(s) if the employee produces a medical certificate stating that the employee was unable to work for the duration of the employee’s absence on account of sickness or injury. It is an inherent requirement that the medical practitioner indicates the following on the medical certificate: That the employee was unable to perform his/her duties as a result of sickness or injury; and That his diagnosis is based on his professional opinion. Section 23(2) of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act states that a valid medical certificate must: Be issued and signed by a medical practitioner; or any other person who is certified to diagnose and treat patients; and who is registered with a professional council established by an Act of Parliament. Therefore, it is necessary to establish whether the person who issued the medical certificate is either a medical practitioner in terms of the Act, a person certified to diagnose and treat patients, or a person registered with a professional council. The aforementioned requirement at this stage is still extremely vague to most employers. To clarify the issue, one has to look as to who the Act describes as a medical practitioner. A medical practitioner, under the definitions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, means a person entitled to practise as a medical practitioner in terms of section 17 of the Medical, Dental and Supplementary Health Services Act 1974 (Act No. 56 1974), better known as the Health Professions Act. The following medical practitioners may issue medical certificates under the Act: A doctor in possession of an MBChB degree who is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa; A dentist who is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa; A psychologist in possession of a master’s degree in research, counselling or clinical psychology who is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa; Any other medical practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. It is clear from the aforementioned that a doctor, a dentist and a psychologist qualify as a medical practitioner in terms of legislation, however, the door is left wide open for any other medical practitioners who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa such as registered Professional Nurses and Traditional Healers. A Professional Nurse who holds an additional qualification in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care and is registered as such by the South African Nursing Council is capable of providing direct patient case for all types of illnesses and ailments, offering the first level of nursing care that patients receive and is competent to independently render appropriate and skilled primary care services. Such a nurse is competent to assess, diagnose, treat and issue sick notes to patients. On 30 April 2014, then President Jacob Zuma signed the Traditional Health Practitioners Act which means that traditional healers must register with the Traditional Health Practitioners Council of South Africa which will enable a registered traditional healer to provide an employee who is absent from work due to incapacity with a valid and recognised medical certificate which an employer must accept. Section 17(2) of the Health Professions Act provides that any person desirable to register as a medical practitioner in terms of the Act shall apply to the registrar of the council. Section 17(3) of the Health Professions Act grants the registrar authority, upon receipt of the applicant’s qualifications and other documents, to issue the applicant a registration certificate authorising the applicant to practice the profession in which he/she applied for, if the registrar is satisfied that the applicant has satisfied the requirements. Employers often find employees who have been absent for a certain period, who upon their return provide a note from the clinic, which merely states that the employee visited the clinic on a specific day. As mentioned earlier, employers are unsure as to whether these certificates are valid for purposes of sick leave. The first step to assess the validity of the medical certificate is to establish whether the person who issued or signed the certificate is a medical practitioner or not. As discussed above, such a person would be a doctor, a dentist or a psychologist. If the certificate was issued by a person other than the aforementioned, it is imperative that the certificate indicates that the person is indeed registered as a medical practitioner in terms of the Health Professions Act. The medical certificate should also indicate such a person’s practice number. The second step to verify the validity of the medical certificate is to establish whether the certificate indicates that the employee was unable to perform his/her duties as a result of the sickness or injury. The diagnosis of the medical practitioner should, as mentioned earlier, be based on his professional opinion and not on the information provided by the patient/employee. Medical certificates that comply with the abovementioned requirements will only then be deemed valid and employers may then grant paid sick leave as contemplated in the rules of the Sick Pay Fund. www.eohcb.co.za/contact-
