- Five Ways You Can Develop an Attitude of Gratitude
The staff at Associated Hair Professionals recently shared a blog post titled An Attitude of Gratitude. Below is their advice on how to develop an attitude of gratitude. Each day, find at least one thing you’re grateful for. It could be that you just did an amazing updo for one of your favorite clients for her bridal shower, and she’s thrilled with the results. Maybe it’s a kind smile from a stranger on the street, or a sweet good morning kiss from your spouse. If you find you’re feeling uninspired, remember that one thing, or the many things, that are good in your life, and try practicing gratitude. Here are five ways you can develop an attitude of gratitude: Appreciate Everything If you pay attention and start appreciating everything good in your life, you will increase your positive attitude. Being an upbeat, grateful person attracts other people into your life who have a similar mindset. Everyday Gratitude Every day, take the time to journal three things that you’re grateful for. If you do this each morning, it sets the mood for your entire day. Even if you’ve had a bad day, ending the day with writing three more things you’re grateful for will make the bad day fade, and allow you to sleep more peacefully. Surround Yourself with Gratitude-Focused People Who wants to be around “Debbie Downer”? Negative people will only bring you down. Surround yourself with people who practice gratitude, and watch your gratitude and appreciation grow. The more time you spend in a positive environment, the happier you will be. Live in the Present Living in the present can help you reframe what you’re grateful for right now. It can also help focus clearly on the future you want to create. When you live in the present, you can see how far your life has progressed and celebrate your achievements from past accomplishments. Commit to Practicing Gratitude To help you appreciate the things that matter to you and gain insight to what you consider important, commit to practicing gratitude daily. It will help you define your purpose and become clear on why certain things and people are valuable to you. You also get to see the positive effect your gratitude has on others. Gratitude can change your life. An attitude of gratitude also ensures you feel happier, more positive, and more excited. What more could you ask for? - Synergy Hair in Kloof Inspires with Competition Work and Trend Collection
By Wynand Roets While we were still recovering from the 3rd Covid wave and the insurrection that happened in July it was hard to pick up the pieces. Seeing we had a little time on our hands, we decided, why not get our team together and do something different from everyday in the salon? Why not enter the new EOHCB digital competition and combine it with a salon Hair collection to finish off 2021? Personally I must say that it was a wonderful experience to work as a team, I actually cannot wait to do this again. It was great to see our team come together like this with a common goal. It gave everyone a huge confidence boost and made the team motivated and hungry to learn. For the Inspiration of this collection we looked at 3 aspects, For the haircuts, 70's and 80's Shags and Mullets are making a comeback, therefore that was the shapes we were looking for with their choppy layered looks, volume, curls and messiness. For the hair colour, we looked at graffiti as it’s a visual form of communication and art, sometimes even illegal... we chose bold, expressive colour to compliment our cuts. For clothing we chose 90's street gear look, baggy, hip-hop and grunge was the most iconic subculture of that era and brought our looks together. There will be more from us in the next year as we loved it so much we just have to do it again! - Vaccinations and Why Mandatory Programmes Help
Making an Informed Decision about Vaccination – What you need to know A Vaccinated Industry is a Safe, Sustainable and Successful Industry In the latest news, we are not only facing the discovery of a new variant of Covid-19, Omicron, but a significant uptick in overall cases in South Africa, especially Gauteng. SA COVID CASES SPIKE AGAIN AS 11,535 NEW CASES RECORDED - Gauteng accounts for 72% of the new coronavirus infections, the Western Cape 6% and KwaZulu-Natal 5%. Click HERE for full article. And the latest reports indicate that vaccinations will become mandatory in South Africa in early 2022, with the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the country’s biggest labour group, now joining business groups in backing the move. Click HERE for full article. One of the critical aspects of this lies in the fact that the number of Omicron cases actually do not make up a large proportion of these cases as yet. There will be a delay until those cases show whether they require hospitalisation as they’re very new. So the majority of cases we’re seeing are still more likely to be Delta variant which we know causes a high number of hospitalisations in unvaccinated people. This is a good thing because the current vaccines ARE effective against Delta, and have been seen to be more effective than natural immunity against Omicron. So vaccination, masking, sanitisation, and maintenance of social distancing are still the most effective responses to Covid-19 in all its variants. Vaccination is critical further in the prevention of the development of even more variants. Given South Africa’s large immunocompromised population with TB and HIV fairly endemic, not only was our scientific community pro-active in the discovery of Omicron, but the unvaccinated population is extremely vulnerable to variants arising as vaccine uptake slows. When a population is largely unvaccinated, those with compromised immune systems may be sicker for longer with the virus. Mutations happen when the virus particles are allowed to reproduce uncontrollably for a length of time. Mutations are mistakes that occur as the virus makes more and more copies of DNA/RNA and creates more of itself. The longer the virus is allowed to reproduce in a body, the more mistakes happen – creating variants which are passed on and spread between humans. Vaccinated people clear their infection quickly from their systems, the vaccines having instructed the body to recognise the virus immediately. This means the virus has far less time to make copies of itself and make mistakes in the process. It’s a matter of time. What is the point? The point lies in increasing the proportion of vaccinated, protected people in the population, to the degree that they outnumber the unvaccinated, vulnerable proportion. This not only creates a smaller pool for the virus to develop mutations, but means we can look at the long-term goal of creating a mild, endemic disease in the human population, like the common cold. Futurist and well known author Graeme Codrington puts it best: Seatbelts work. So do vaccines. One of the common criticisms of the Covid vaccines is that they don't work. People ask: "why are vaccinated people scared of the unvaccinated?" Well, the truth is that vaccines DO work, just not perfectly. Exactly like seatbelts in cars. Just because sometimes some people still die in car accidents, even if they're wearing seatbelts doesn't mean that we shouldn't bother with seatbelts at all. Vaccines protect us against Covid in three ways: 1. They make it much less likely that we will get Covid. 2. Even if we do get Covid, they then further ensure we only get a mild case of Covid. 3. And, even if we get a bad version of Covid, it lasts fewer days (this deals with the criticism that vaccinated people with Covid have the same viral load as the unvaccinated - they might do, IF they get badly sick, but will have that viral load for fewer days and infect fewer people). Vaccines work. The data is clear. Vaccines are not harmful - even though we know some people will have adverse effects, this is much, much less of an issue than people getting Covid. #RollUpYourSleevesSA and get vaccinated today. - EOHCB: Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA)
The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) established a compensation fund, under the control of the Director General of the Department of Employment and Labour. In practice, the Director-General delegates his or her functions to the Compensation Commissioner. Any compensation claimed for occupational injuries or diseases that an employee might have had against an employer is replaced by insurance coverage, in order to guarantee reasonable remuneration or income for employees who have suffered a workplace injury or occupational disease. COIDA provides for coverage on a no-fault basis, meaning that the employee (or his or her dependant) will be compensated regardless, of whether the employer was at fault in causing the injury or disease. Employers are expected to register and pay assessments to the Compensation Fund. Employees are prevented from suing their employers for damages suffered as a result of an occupational accident or disease – they must claim from the Compensation Fund. Employees who are employed by labour brokers are, however, not prevented from suing the clients of the labour brokers if they are able to prove negligence. COIDA defines an “accident” to mean “an accident arising out of and in the course of an employee’s employment and resulting in a personal injury, illness or the death of the employee”. COIDA provides extensive coverage to most employees, including casual employees, domestic workers, labour broker employees and, in the case of a deceased employee, his / her dependants. Independent contractors and selfemployed workers are, however, excluded. Compensation Fund benefits are paid to three categories of claimants: Employees who suffer a temporary disability (maximum period of 24 months); Employees who are permanently disabled (a lump sum is paid if the percentage disability is 30% or less; otherwise a regular (pension payment) is made); and The dependants of employees who die as a result of injuries sustained in work-related accidents or as a result of an occupational disease. Reasonable medical aid expenses arising out of an injury on duty are payable for a period of two years, or longer if further medical treatment will reduce the extent of the disablement. COIDA places extensive obligations upon all employers in South Africa. These include: Registration with the Commissioner; Submitting annual wage returns; Paying assessments; and Reporting all accidents and occupational diseases to the Commissioner. Employers must pay employees who are temporarily disabled their compensation for the first three months of absence from work (which will be reimbursed by the Fund). The failure to perform any of these functions is a criminal offence and extensive penalties may be imposed in cases of non-compliance. There is great difficulty in proving that an employee contracted a disease as a result of the type of work he or she was performing or from working in a particular workplace. Schedule 3 of COIDA lists the most common occupational diseases to address this issue. Employees who contract unlisted work-related diseases are required to prove that the disease is related to their work in order to receive compensation. The calculation of compensation for a disease may be based on earnings at the time of the commencement (i.e., the diagnosis date) of the disease. If an employee believes that he or she has been injured in the workplace or as a result of a working condition, a claim can be filed with the Compensation Commissioner who will evaluate the claim against a schedule of common workplace injuries and diseases. An employee must provide some documentation from approved medical practitioners to support his or her claim. Various Workman’s Compensation Insurance (W.CI.) referral forms need to be completed and submitted to the Compensation Commissioner, depending upon whether the employee has experienced an occupational injury or disease. If the claim proves successful, the employer is liable for the payment of compensation for the first three months from the date of the occupational injury. With reference to Covid-19 and vaccinations, during August 2021, the Compensation Commissioner published a notice stating that the Compensation Fund will cover employees for injuries, illness or death as a result of receiving a Covid-19 vaccine, only where an employee is required by the employer to receive vaccination as an inherent requirement of employment or where vaccination is required based on the Occupational Health and Safety risk assessment conducted by the employer. The following requirements shall apply: The vaccination must be regarded as an inherent requirement of the job as determined by the employer’s risk assessment; The employee must have been vaccinated with SAHPRA-approved Covid-19 vaccine; Evidence must be provided of the employer’s Risk Assessment and Vaccination Plan as set out in paragraph 3(1)(a)(i)(ii) and (b) of the Consolidated Directions on Occupational Health and Safety Measures in Certain Workplaces dated 28 May 2021; The chronological sequence between the vaccine inoculation and the development of symptoms and clinical signs must be provided; The employee must have presented with symptoms and clinical signs that are generally recognised as side effects of Covid -19 vaccine; and Additional tests may be required to assess the presence of abnormalities of any organ affected. Take further notice that the claims will be adjudicated and compensation will be determined and paid in terms of the Act and the Guidelines of Compensation Fund. It is compulsory for all employers to register their employees with the Compensation Commissioner. An employer must register with the Commissioner within seven days after the day on which he / she employs his / her first employee. An employer must register with the Commissioner by submitting Form W As 2 with the particulars required therein to the Commissioner. These forms are available on the website of Department of Labour. Employers must make sure that they fill in all the questions on the form. During registration copies of the following documentation should be included: The registration certificate from the Register of Companies if they are a company or closed corporation; or Their ID document, if they are sole owners of the business. The Compensation Fund is a trust fund that is controlled by the Compensation Commissioner and employer contributes to the Compensation Fund. The Commissioner is appointed to administer the Fund and approve claims lodge by employees or their dependants. This means that the Fund will compensate the employee or their dependants and not the employer. The annual assessment fee of an employer is based on their employee's earnings and the risks associated with the type of work or profession. Before 31 March each year, all employers must submit a statement of earnings paid to all their workers from the beginning of March to the end of February.
