  • Heritage Month Spotlight on Fatma Salanke: Celebrate South African talent with Depot®

Breaking Boundaries with Precision:  Fatma Salanke on Thriving as the Only Female Barber at Sorbet MAN Morningside   At DEPOT – THE MALE TOOLS & Co , we believe grooming is more than technique—it’s culture, confidence, and character. In our latest interview, we spoke with Fatma Solanke , the only female barber at Sorbet MAN Morningside, to explore her journey in a male-dominated industry. Her insights offer inspiration and practical wisdom for salon owners and barbers navigating the evolving landscape of professional grooming.   1. What inspired you to pursue a career in barbering? Fatma:   My passion for creativity was the starting point. But more than that, I wanted to challenge the norms and break down gender barriers. Barbering gave me a platform to express artistry while proving that skill knows no gender.   2. What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as a woman in this industry, and how have you overcome them? Fatma:   Stereotyping has been the toughest hurdle—along with the physical demands of the job. Some clients and even colleagues have questioned whether I could deliver the styles they envisioned. I quickly realised I had to work twice as hard to earn the same level of trust and respect. That challenge became my fuel.   3. Do clients react differently when they realise their barber is a woman? How do you use that to your advantage? Fatma:   Absolutely. Some clients are surprised, others hesitant—sometimes due to religious beliefs or simply unfamiliarity. Many men have never had their hair cut by a woman. That’s my cue to exceed expectations. I focus on delivering exceptional service and results so they leave not just impressed, but asking for me by name next time.   4. How has working at Sorbet MAN supported your growth? Fatma:   Professionally, Sorbet MAN has been a launchpad for skills development and exposure to diverse clientele. It’s cultivated a strong work culture and given me confidence, satisfaction, and a real sense of accomplishment.   Personally, it’s given me a sense of belonging. I’ve grown emotionally and found purpose in my craft. This journey has truly made me a better person.   5. What advice would you give to women considering a career in barbering? Fatma:   Master your craft and build confidence. Be ready to face stereotypes head-on. Surround yourself with mentors—even if they’re not women—and stay curious. Learn to connect with clients beyond the chair: talk sports, movies, whatever resonates. Great barbering is equal parts skill and conversation. And above all, deliver service that speaks louder than any doubt.   We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Fatma Salanke for her outstanding work and unwavering dedication to her craft.   Her journey is a powerful example of resilience, excellence, and the evolving face of modern barbering. As a valued supporter of the DEPOT brand, Fatma continues to inspire both her peers and clients through her professionalism and passion. We thank her for her ongoing commitment and proudly stand beside her as she breaks new ground in the industry.   Here’s to her continued success—we look forward to seeing her thrive and lead with distinction in the years to come! • Spring into Protection: L’ANZA Must-Haves for UV, Humidity & Heat Defense

As we step into spring and prepare for the vibrant days of summer, hair faces a new set of challenges. Longer days mean increased sun exposure, higher humidity, and more frequent heat styling as clients embrace fresh, polished looks. For stylists, this season is the ideal time to focus on protection and prevention — ensuring that every client’s hair remains as healthy and luminous as the styles you create. L’ANZA Healing Haircare provides a full spectrum of solutions, powered by advanced technology and nature’s finest botanicals, to shield hair from UV rays, humidity, and thermal stress. Here’s how you can prepare your clients for the season ahead. 1. Defend Color with Healing ColorCare Trauma Treatment Clients invest in beautiful color — and nothing fades it faster than the sun. L’ANZA’s exclusive Flower Shield Complex harnesses the natural anti-fade powers of flowers, preserving vibrancy across the full color spectrum. Trauma Treatment goes further, restoring compromised strands while providing continuous color, UV and thermal protection. It’s a salon essential for every color client stepping into the sunny months. 2. Shield Against Heat with Healing Style Thermal Defense Spring and summer styling often involves blowouts, curling, or straightening. Thermal Defense provides a weightless barrier against high-temperature tools while locking in style memory. The result? Smooth, polished finishes that last, without compromising the health of the hair. 3. Strengthen & Protect with Healing Strength Neem Plant Silk Serum Weak, fragile hair is especially vulnerable to environmental stress. Infused with Neem Plant and Cystine Peptides , this award-winning serum increases shine by up to 250% while fortifying strands from within. It delivers silky softness without weight, and its built-in UV and thermal protection make it a seasonal staple for clients who love sleek, radiant hair. 4. Prevent Damage Before It Starts with Neem Plant Detangling Primer Knots and tangles can lead to unnecessary breakage — especially when hair is exposed to heat and humidity. The Detangling Primer smooths rough cuticles, strengthens fragile strands, and defends against UV and thermal stress. A perfect prep step before styling, it helps maintain manageability and resilience even in challenging conditions. 5. Luxurious Protection & Shine with Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment For the ultimate finishing touch, Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment delivers brilliance, body, and bounce while shielding hair from UV rays and heat. Its lightweight yet deeply reparative formula ensures that clients enjoy healthy strength and radiant shine all summer long. • London Wellness Academy answers all your Cruise Ship Questions

Are you considering a cruise ship contract but need to know more? London Wellness Academy, with more than 40-year experience in training students for careers at sea, gives us all the information on frequently asked questions. Contracts The contracts for spa and salon staff are a commitment of 9 months. During this time, you will receive 1.5 days off for every 7 days of work. Scheduled days may depend on your ship and itinerary. You will also qualify for one week of vacation time for every month worked.   Cruise Ship Assignments Cruise ship assignments are based on business needs, but all assignments offer personal and professional growth as well as an opportunity to save earnings for the future. Each cruise line is different in what they offer – unique destinations, varied mix of guests and demographics, with so many diverse forms of entertainment!   Embarkation day We recommend you bring a maximum of 20kg luggage. Anything over this amount may be subject to additional fees. On embarkation day, the spa manager or one of the team members meets you and helps you settle in. After an orientation, prepare to begin working immediately!   Accommodation Where you stay and sleep is your sanctuary, a place to escape the work and focus on rest and recovery; read a book; continue studies; plan your future. Except for management, acupuncture and medi-spa physicians, your cabin refuge is shared with a team member. A typical cabin is equipped with a bunk bed to provide some additional space, telephone, small wardrobe closet, dresser, private shower and bathroom facilities. It has everything one would need. Cabins can be personalised by hanging up pictures of loved ones and what inspires you. The space can be made your very own. Dining From the crew dining room to dining on the Lido deck and specialty restaurants, cruise ships offer a myriad of food and beverage options. The crew dining room is open at all times for staff. There is no cost for dining in this crew area. Most ships also feature specialty restaurants at an additional cost. As this is a passenger restaurant, staff reservation confirmations for seating is based on guest demand. On some smaller ships, staff will always dine in the guest dining rooms. Never-the-less, specialty restaurants are always a wonderful option for celebrations, special occasions, or to treat yourself on a whim.   Live The Cruising Life Most cruise lines want their crew to thoroughly enjoy the cruising life. In many instances, this means that crew can experience many aspects of the guests’ voyage. Whilst there may be some areas exclusively for guests, crew can, for the most part, visit the various lounges, watch world-class performances and Broadway shows in the theatres, and more as long as they adhere to dress codes. After a long day with cruise guests, sometimes we want to just relax and be ourselves. For those instances, there is always a crew bar where officers, staff and crew meet to socialise amongst themselves. Most ships, especially larger vessels, also have a crew sunbathing deck with a pool as crew cannot use passenger pool areas. The private crew deck can offer a wonderful escape during time off or a break!   Communications Calling family and friends has become easier over time, and on many ships you can call home from the comfort of your cabin. Costs vary – but they are very reasonable. E-mail is also an option if you subscribe to the onboard wireless plan. For those staff members who have a mobile phone, you can use your phone to place a call whilst in port and many ports offer complimentary Wifi. Finances There is no limit on your earnings. Wage commissions have a minimum monthly guarantee. A great work ethic combined with a positive attitude will mean you are extremely successful onboard. Every week you will have a fresh start with thousands of new potential clients on board, bringing new opportunities every time. Because it is a tax-free environment, retailing is easy as it’s cheaper for clients to buy onboard. Each staff member receives a visa debit card by Brightwell where you can access money via ATMs and transfer funds online. Salaries are automatically credited to accounts. The debit card can be used to withdraw money from an ATM machine or pay at any venue that accepts credit or debit cards. Pay cycles vary from cruise line to cruise line but typically occur bi-weekly or monthly.   Onboard living expenses Staff live onboard rent-free, and meals are provided. All other expenses – phone calls, wireless internet, gift shop purchases, bar bills – are a personal choice.   Does travel, adventure, great money, and new horizons everyday sound like your dream job?  Sign up  HERE  or email Nadine  nadineb@londonwellnessacademy.com  or Daniella  daniella.diem@londonwellnessacademy.com   Find out more by heading to  www.londonwellnessacademy.com Follow us on social media Facebook   |  Instagram
