  • Style Inspiration: Neutral Ground by Kerrie Di Mattia, Australia

Neutral Ground is inspired by a realisation that we place limits on ourselves, our creativity and more importantly, limits on our clients when we see gender attached to hair! Last year we adopted Gender Neutral pricing in our salons & it was with this change our LBGTQI clientele grew tenfold. Sadly, along with that growth it became evident that within our rural regional town there was a definite lack of understanding & tolerance surrounding our local queer community. That's what it is, it's gender neutral. We're catering to everyone, and also we want people to be comfortable asking for any type of haircut, whether it's feminine, masculine, or androgynous. I wanted to bring awareness to & provoke conversation around hair & gender with a collection of simply styled, uncomplicated images focusing purely on beautiful hair on beautiful people who choose to just be themselves. Hair isn’t masculine or feminine, it’s wearable art, a suit of armour & a form of expression that gives you the freedom to lead with & look the way you feel! Each model belongs to our local community, some LBGTQI & some not, but all completely on board with what I have created. The room was quite simply full of such a calm & loving energy, which I hope I captured in the images. There was a freedom & cohesion in their complete acceptance of one another! The hair was complemented by seamless glowing skin, the styling directive was to keep the fabrics & tones neutral, understated & organic in order for the earthy natural hair colours of each of the images to shine. HAIR: Kerrie Di Mattia MAKEUP: Bill Fitzpatrick STYLING: Candice Battersby PHOTGRAPHY: Amber Toms POST PRODUCTION: Peter Orlik ASSISTANTS: Lauren Di Mattia Meg Lamrock, Ava Kroehnert Sandi Skennar, Di Mattia & Co Team PRODUCTS: JOICO Australia/NZ White Sands Australia

  • Business Blog 3 July 2023: Training and Education

We are a skills-based industry. Training and education are the best ways to demonstrate an 'investment in people' philosophy in your salon. Not only do they develop the skills to satisfy a growing client base, improving the service levels in the salon virtually guarantees your client database will keep growing and your salon will experience lower staff turnover. There are three key areas to focus training - mind skills, people skills and technical skills. Mind skills These include attitude and with the right mental attitude that anything and everything is achievable. Attitude is a choice we make and by making the wrong choice, often leads to disappointment and failure. On the other hand, making the right choices often produces amazing results. The key to attitude is gratitude. If you start each grateful for your blessings - you woke up this morning, you have a job, and you are surrounded by people that love, respect and admire you. Why would that not lead to greater success? People skills Your ability to communicate with your clients, to be able to tell your story and to listen to theirs in terms of their problems, needs and desires. People don't care how much you know until they can trust you to hear them and know how much you care. What better environment for you to market your knowledge, experience, and expertise in pursuit of a satisfied client. The law of attraction works better with the right mental attitude and good people skills. Technical skills All professionals need to hone their skills whether it is doctors, lawyers, airline pilots, stylists, or beauty therapists. By not updating your skills you run the risk of becoming redundant. After five years you can become someone who either has one year's experience repeated five times or someone with five years’ experience - your choice. After all, you are only as good as your last haircut. Is training and education a good investment? If you're not sure, consider the cost of ignorance. - Terry Miles, MD of MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za

  • EOHCB: How to Know If Your Employees Feel Safe at Work (Psychological Safety)

While some managers may not understand the significance of psychological safety for effective teamwork or problem-solving, it's rare for team leaders to admit that they're not actively trying to create a safe environment. However, in some work cultures, traits like toughness, aggressive challenge, or the ability to adapt quickly are highly valued. As a result, team members who don't feel safe might be considered to have a lack of fit with the group and their concerns may be dismissed. What these leaders may not realize is that a lack of psychological safety affects everyone on the team, even those who appear to fit in. This lack of safety can be very costly for both the team and the organization. Team members may adjust their behaviours and responses, resulting in an ineffective team. If everyone on the team is doing this, the team leader may not recognise the extent of the disengagement and unproductive behaviour that has taken root. To determine if team members feel safe, managers and leaders can look for indicators similar to those used by researchers to measure psychological safety: Employees actively share opinions that differ from those of their colleagues or manager People use clear, direct, and respectful language without excessive caveats or an excessive attempt to avoid offense Feedback is given when requested, both positive and negative, and negative feedback is seen as an opportunity to learn and collaborate There are multiple channels for employee feedback During status meetings, people regularly share aspects of collective objectives that are at risk or not going well Few bad surprises occur, as leaders are aware of non-compliance with company policies and procedures For learning, innovation, and growth to occur in the workplace, interpersonal trust, self-awareness, and psychological safety are crucial. Psychological safety should not be viewed as a mere job perk but as an integral part of every company's culture and future. Psychological safety must be a top priority in the workplace if businesses want to succeed. More importantly, psychological safety contributes to an inclusive, diverse, and accepting workplace where team members feel comfortable expressing themselves. Ultimately, the quality of a company is reflected in the well-being and satisfaction of its team members. • Business Blog 28 June 2023: It’s More than Turnover

Business is all about numbers and the LAST number you should stress about is TURNOVER. Rather focus on the numbers that matter and watch your turnover grow. How many clients visit the salon on a monthly, yearly basis? Is that number growing or shrinking? Every salon loses clients and, if you don't have a new client strategy, your client data base will continue to shrink. The most effective new client strategy is referrals. If clients really are loyal to you and your business they will willingly recommend their friends and colleagues, maybe all you need to do is ask them - and back that up with a dynamic loyalty programme. Monitor the average docket value of each staff member. Clients are shoppers and will buy anything professionally recommended by an industry expert that really cares about improving the health of their client's hair. To optimise turnover, new clients should be booked first to staff generating the higher docket values. Docket values grow in direct relationship to the amount of training staff receive. Your colour business should be no less than 40% of turnover. Your client database is probably around 65% female and 35% male and virtually every client has colour. So the question is, if not by you, where are they having their colour done? We will blogging about building a strong colour business in one of our next blogs. And by the way, how many of your clients have a treatment with every chemical service, when in fact they all should? Sell treatments, promote treatments, include the treatment in the cost of a colour service, but clients MUST have a treatment after a chemical service. Could you imagine having an operation (the equivalent to a chemical service) and not having the anaesthetic and the painkillers and the antibiotics? Focus on retail sales and monitor both individual and salon ratio of retail to services. Retail should be 20% of your turnover and yet most homecare products are bought at the supermarket - why is that? There is no more convenient place for clients to buy their home haircare products than in the salon environment! And they will, provided the salon creates the selling environment. The number of clients leaving the salon, having pre-booked their next appointment, should be growing as stylists get used to promoting this business building, customer service strategy. No matter what your turnover is, you will always make a profit PROVIDED you monitor the numbers on a daily basis and keep costs in line with turnover.
