  • Hairdressers Usher in Spring at Salon International 2023

South Africa’s professional hair sector came under the spotlight at the recent Salon International Expo at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand during the first weekend in September, 2023. Visitors were treated to a host of exciting live events, including Twincare’s Spring Collection Runway Show and the Moroccanoil Colour Presentation, which featured a feast of fabulous summery colours, both on short and long styles. Stylists involved in the Spring Collection included Irene of The Zhoosh Cut; Terence of Terenzo Suites; Shawn of Fringe Hair; Lakin of Lakin Hair; Nelita of Hair Impressions; Yvonne of Gold Mane; Stacey of Lush Hair And Beauty; Lina of Solo Tu; Natasha of Bespoke; Lorraine of Lorraine Roseler; Kaylee of Salon Kay; Anita of Hair @Hub; Tasmin of Francos Nicolway; Larochelle of Nudo @799; Sume of Nudo hair lab on Lois; and Michelle of Snapdragon. Label.M and Artero also generated a lot of interest on the Hair Stage, as did the ORS event. Wahl presented the top barbering styles for Spring, with some striking shades on show. Local brand Native Child demoed how their new product works on curly type hair. BabylissPro hosted its annual barbering competition at Salon International. The results of the BabylissPro Barber of the Year 2023 are: 1st - Kyle Titus @ Speakeasy Shop 2nd - Terronova Johnson @ Carolines Hair 3rd – Leandri Ohlsen @ Kuif & Baard. The Biosense Junior Hair Stylist of The Year Competition was held at the Twincare Gala Awards on the evening of 3rd September at Salon International. Eligible entries needed less than 2 years of experience in the industry, with the eight finalists required to present a show at the Gala event. First place went to Sibongile Mdhluli of Paul James, with Nicole Pedro of Collab Hair second, and Britteny Hall of Dianes in third spot. A new feature at Salon International was Barber Connect, a networking and educational programme targeted at professional barbers. Salon International ran alongside its sister event, Professional Beauty Johannesburg. The 2024 edition of both events will take place on 1 & 2 September.

  • EOHCB: Flexibility in the Workplace to Curb Burnout

In recent years, burnout has become a significant problem in the workplace. It is a condition that results from chronic stress and overwork, causing physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a sense of reduced personal accomplishment. Burnout can affect anyone in any profession, from entry-level positions to top executives. It is a serious issue that can lead to decreased productivity, high staff turnover rates, and an overall negative work environment. One way to address burnout in the workplace is by creating flexibility. Flexibility refers to an employee's ability to adjust their work schedule to fit their personal needs. This can include setting flexible hours, or taking time off as needed. When employees have more control over their work schedule, they can better balance their personal and professional lives, leading to less stress and fewer burnout symptoms. To create flexibility in the workplace, employers can offer flexible hours. This means giving employees the option to work outside of traditional prescribed business or contractual hours. This can include starting earlier or later in the day, working part-time, or job sharing. By offering flexible hours, employees can better accommodate their personal responsibilities, such as childcare, appointments, or hobbies. This, in turn, leads to happier and more productive employees. Employers can also encourage employees to take time off as needed. This includes offering limited paid time off or allowing employees to take time off for personal reasons. By allowing employees to take time off as needed, they can recharge their batteries and come back to work more focused and productive. In addition to these options, employers can also implement other workplace policies to promote flexibility, such as providing wellness programs, encouraging breaks throughout the day, and offering employee assistance programs. These policies can help reduce stress and improve overall employee well-being, which can reduce the likelihood of burnout. In conclusion, creating flexibility in the workplace can help reduce burnout and promote employee well-being. Employers can offer flexible hours and encourage employees to take time off as needed. By implementing these policies, employers can create a happier and more productive workforce. It's a win-win situation for both employees and employers alike. • Style Inspiration: OTT by Kristie Kesic, Cobelle Creative, Australia

Shoplifter is a New York based contemporary artist, known for her sculpture artwork, wall murals and site-specific installations. I was captivated and consumed by her imaginative, mind-expanding works and discovered her artwork is created from real and synthetic hair. I immediately had the impulse to create a colour collection inspired by her work. The way hair is abundantly layered to create structures and separated into multicoloured tufts is a force of self-expression. In parts it is jagged and erratic; in others the colour blurs to into ethereal shape. It highlights how hair can be used as a shield or alternatively a way of showcasing yourself to the world. Shoplifter was quoted describing one of her collections as “…one exuberant, colourful, playful, fluffy immersive installation”, that she just wanted to be Over the Top. These words captured my imagination and O.T.T was created. O.T.T is a collection of images that are playful, beautiful and exuberant. Images with bold colour that captured the eyes and draws you in. Shapes and colour pairings take you on a journey of colour combinations, divided into different sections progressing from dark tones to euphoric colours. Overall creating a visual that is Over the Top (O.T.T.) with its playfulness and beauty.
