- Renaldo’s Return with Reuzel Look & Learn
Joburg barbers and hairstylists were buzzing with excitement in August as MHB Studio hosted a spectacular hair event. The sold-out Reuzel Look & Learn session drew a full house of clients, all ready to be wowed by the latest in hair and beard styling, thanks to Reuzel Scumbassador Renaldo Da Silva , who had recently returned from training at Reuzel’s world-renowned Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier . Clients began arriving at 11.30 am, eager to see what was in store. By noon, the event was in full swing, kicked off by MHB’s Managing Director, Chris Stofberg, and National Education Manager, Elizma Crous. The Star of the Show: Renaldo The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Renaldo. Fresh from Rotterdam, he took centre stage and immediately captivated the audience with his demonstration of Reuzel's signature haircuts and beard styles. His first model, Grant Jenkins from Bliss Hair, showcased the Executive Contour Haircut – an immaculate, timeless look that had everyone buzzing. Next up was the Executive Contour Beard, a style that proves once again that attention to detail is key. Lunch and Learn After the first two models, guests enjoyed a light lunch, which gave everyone a chance to chat about the morning’s demonstrations. Renaldo returned after lunch with the third model, showcasing the Textured Crop – another classic style, but edgy and shorter. He wrapped up the session with the Vanguard , a daring and bold slick-back look. Caption: Left: East Side Barbers: Harlan, Sivan, Andrew, Jordan and Fanie. Games, Prizes, and a Special Guest But the fun didn’t stop there. The event closed with the Reuzel Wheel of Fortune game, where everyone walked away with a Reuzel product, ensuring no one left empty-handed. The excitement peaked with a lucky draw for the limited edition Reuzel X Kyone Clipper , won by Tracy Knox from Moulin Rouge, adding a memorable highlight to an already fantastic day. Special guest and Mizutani Scissors Import Specialist, Andrew Todd brought his expertise to the event, showcasing a range of Mizutani scissors. His table was a popular stop, with many taking advantage of his advice on the best purchases and tips on scissor care. Looking Ahead The Joburg event at MHB Studio wasn’t just a demonstration, it was a celebration of skill, creativity, and community. The success of the Look & Learn session has set the bar high, and we can’t wait to see what Renaldo and the Reuzel team have in store next! For those in Cape Town, keep your eyes peeled – there just might be something exciting headed your way! Reuzel Instagram Facebook Modern Hair & Beauty Facebook Instagram Website

- ESP Industry Index - July 2024
ESP ☁️ Industry Index Whilst individual businesses will have their own ESP Business Intelligence indices, it's good to compare that to the industry index to create a call to action using ESP ☁️ type technologies. July 2024 ESP ☁️ Index Notes: Service and Retail turnover are both down year on year and month on month due to a decrease in the number of client visits. This is despite an increase in the average spend per visit. While the pressure on the number of clients is always concerning it is good to see that this is being mitigated by the average spend per visit. So the focus is to get schedule occupancy as close to 100% as possible. This starts, as always, with offering great services and products at the right price but continues with efforts to retain clients. Using ESP ☁️ type technologies create opportunities to answer these calls to action: Feedback follow ups with clients, especially new clients. Also make sure that you act on that feedback in order to win back clients where necessary. Rewarding loyalty Effective marketing campaigns Making it easy for clients to book via online bookings Effective consultations with clients to make sure you understand their needs Automated appointment reminders Using gift vouchers to win new clients Analysing your client retention to track new and regular clients and which staff are successfully retaining them Email: info@espconnect.africa
- KAO Joins Salon International 2024
By Kevin Tabilo: Country Manager for KAO South Africa I started in this industry in 2014 and I immediately fell in love with it. From when I learned about a Colour Wheel to doing my first in salon treatment - shame that model had a proper bath at the salon that day, I knew that it was my calling and I knew that it would be very difficult for me to go back to anything else after dealing with hair stylists every day. Yes, my role has changed now but I will always be a shampoo salesman at heart, and I am deeply passionate about uplifting and growing this amazing industry of ours. It’s what gets me up in the morning and fuels me and my team. So with that being said, I can also remember that my first visit to Salon International was way back in 2014 actually (below) and I just remember thinking, “wow, this is so cool, a trade show for stylists and industry suppliers.” I was instantly hooked and even tried to convince my bosses at the time to join and be part of it. Fast forward to 2019, and I was not only attending but also working for a company that was actually exhibiting and I found it so much fun over those two days. We also had an awards evening that night, that turned into mainly us (the people that worked there) partying but we had a lot of fun. I even remember making a funny video of me giving away the wrong type of bags because people were there for these specific bags and I completely disappointed the mob of a crowd. This was pre-Covid and attendance was still good for the show and we did quite well as a company back then. Of course, then COVID hit and let’s not even get started on that as I am sure we are all sick of hearing the Post-Covid story. Our industry has taken a huge knock since COVID and not just our industry, but the whole global economy. We all know that inflation has been through the roof, fuel prices have spiraled upwards, and the cost of living has increased by double digits in some cases. Until recently, even the Rand was severely weakened by the Global situation. This has put all of us as suppliers under pressure with managing our costs and also making sure our price increases are manageable each year. We have unfortunately also seen a decline in people joining our industry (globally) and Gen-Z’s just don’t see the value in working in enterprises where they have to work with their hands. I think they would all be rather working remotely from a beach in Bali (even me, by the way!) but there is still a huge demand for people with trades and creative people are never going to be replaced by AI. Ask anyone who wants to move overseas how much easier it is to have a trade as opposed to a normal degree. I also don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t trust a robot to do my hair, not for a long time… if ever! We have found ways to make AI work for us and use technology to make our employees’ as well as our clients’ lives easier and for that I am forever grateful. I have been lucky enough to be the generation (Millennial) that has lived gone through the pre-tech bubble and then gradually seen the advancement of technology over the last 30 years or so. So why am I telling you all of this and why should you care? Well, I was invited by Yolanda Knott who is the CEO of Salon International in South Africa to attend Pro Beauty last year September. I took some team members with me, and yes, I was excited again. I was excited to see that hairdressers were still attending the event and I immediately had the idea that if I could, I would definitely want to disrupt the suppliers that have been there year after year. After speaking to some other MDs of haircare companies and having some great discussions with Sandile and Yolanda, I decided that we were going to join this year. The aim? To uplift the industry and get young stylists excited about what is happening from us as suppliers and also to continue to support our ongoing partnerships with Intercoiffure and more specifically Foundation Guillame (the young and upcoming student) - the future of our industry. It would be a great opportunity for us to also do some great show deals and of course newer brands in our portfolio like Varis, our premium hot tool and brush range. The main aim will also be to have a Colour pod where we can highlight some of our new Colour trends with Topchic, Colorance, Elumen and our Lightening services. Goldwell is world renowned for its great Colour and we wanted to make sure that it gets the attention it deserves on what we believe will be the biggest stage this year. We are even more excited that our first year doing it will also be at a brand-new venue and I promise you that you are going to love the Kyalami Convention Centre. Being a massive petrol head, I have been to the car shows here often and they never disappoint. We will have a total of 3 stands this year including a Goldwell Colour Pod , a KAO Brands stand, and a Varis styling station where you will be able to try and play with our new tools and brushes. We also have confirmed guest artists like Bernadine Bennie and Hilke Minnie, and of course our full complement of Educators. We would love to see you there this year and, as the excitement mounts and the buildup happens, we are just beyond ecstatic to be representing our beloved brands and to hopefully see you all there. We want to put our money where our mouth is, and we have committed ourselves to building an incredible community of hair artists. We believe this is the first step of many to making that happen. Come and say hi, have a coffee with us and let’s make this an incredible two days for our industry. - Bargaining Council August 2024: Appointments, Sick Pay Fund & Membership Exemptions
Appointment of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Council Board At the Council's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 23 July 2024, Mr Dane Frost was appointed as Chairperson and Mr Johan Steyn as Vice-Chairperson of the Council Board for two years, 2024 - 2026. Please join us in congratulating Messrs. Frost and Steyn on their appointments. Sick Pay Fund: Rule Changes and Revised Claim Form On 20 May 2024, the SFMC approved several amendments to the Rules of the Sick Pay Fund, which had been agreed upon by the Parties to the Council and which align with the BCEA. For your convenience and ease of reference, a summary of the changes is included below and a copy of the Rules highlighting the changes may be accessed via this link Sick-Pay-Fund-Rule-Amendments . Summary of Changes Sub-clause 5.3 - reference to the prescribed minimum wages/salaries and the wage schedules have been included for purposes of clarity. Furthermore, it is expressly stated that nothing in Sub-clause 5.3 prevents a member from claiming the difference between the amount paid to the member by the SPF and the actual basic salary/wage of the member from the Employer where the contributions to the SPF are based on the prescribed minimum, but such member receives a wage/salary in excess of the prescribed minimum. Sub-clause 5.5.1 - provision is made for a member to transfer 3 days from their 6-day period leave entitlement of 33 days to their 7-day period leave entitlement of 33 days, or vice versa. Sub-clause 5.6 - when submitting a claim to the SPF, a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner, a registered nurse or a registered traditional healer (“the practitioner”) will not apply if the member has been absent from work for less than 2 consecutive days or less than 2 occasions (for 2 consecutive days and less) during an 8-week period. Sub-clause 8.3.2.4 - the requirement to submit, with the claim form, a salary advice slip/payslip which indicates both the member`s gross and nett salary and proof that the contributions to the SPF have been deducted, is deleted. Sub-clause 8.7 - provides that the SPF will execute its best endeavours to make payment to the member in respect of a claim, on the member’s usual payday following the claim being submitted, or the date upon which the submission of a claim has fully complied with the requirements. Clause 9 - while a member will have no claim against the SPF if his/her employer is in arrears in respect of contributions to the SPF, the employee is not prevented from claiming payment for sick leave due to illness or injury from their employer and shall notify the Bargaining Council for purposes of enforcing compliance with the Rules of the SPF. If the arrears in the employer’s and members’ contributions are proven to result from an administrative error or oversight on the part of the Council, the member will not be disqualified from claiming. Any exemption that is granted in relation to the collective agreement or these Rules, will only apply from the date upon which the Exemption Board hands down its decision to grant exemption. Reminder Process Period: Exemption from Membership of the HBSI: September to December The four-month period within which exemptions from membership of the HBSI Pension Fund are processed is September to December each year, for the following calendar year. Both applications and appeals (if any) must be processed within this period. If an exemption is not applied for or granted within the period, an establishment will be required to contribute to the HBSI Fund on behalf of employees and enforcement procedures may follow if not adhered to. Establishments are reminded to complete and submit their applications for the 2025 calendar year (whether making a new application or renewing an existing application) as soon as possible. These applications will be processed within the period September 2024 to December 2024 . Existing exemptions (for 2024) will automatically expire on 31 December 2024 , and invoices will be raised in accordance with the Collective Agreement if your application is not received by the Council on time and/or an exemption is not granted. The Exemption Application Form is available to download from the website Annexure-D or you may request an application form via email from exemption@hcsbc.co.za . In our last Chronicle, July 2024, detailed notes on the application process for exemption from the provisions relating to membership of the HBSI were provided and these can be accessed via the following link Chronicle-July-2024 . - My Salon Software: People Stop Spending When You Stop Servicing
There is no doubt that Covid affected every sector of our lives especially retail and services. There is also a strong relationship between customer spending and the perception of service. I noticed this during my recent visit to the UK. Like everywhere else, prices have risen and customers are having to justify the cost of a visit to the salon, or to their favourite restaurant. And UK hair and beauty salon are fighting back…with SERVICE! Ignoring the horror of spending Pounds bought with Rands (23 to 1), it was the element of service which I found very evident in shops, restaurants and hair salons that seemed to convince customers the price of the visit was worth it. You could feel the welcoming energy as you walked into the shop - smiling faces and a body language that showed service was top of their agenda. And the service doesn’t stop after you have entered the shop, staff are focused on ‘what more can I do to improve your service experience’, right up to the end of the your visit. One might be a bit overwhelmed by this continued attention to service but there is no doubt that, even though prices have increased the best way to survive is to make the SERVICE worth the prices you are asking (or keep lowering your prices until you go out of business.) Who would have thought that people are prepared to pay for SERVICE?
