  • 50 Years of Changes

Marlien Onderstall has been working in the hairdressing industry, with the Maison Costa group, for more than 50 years, and this superstar remembers when the industry was very different. “When Maison Costa introduced hairdressing for men, there was a separate downstairs section where they would go. At the door, the men would look left, right and left again to make sure nobody was watching, and then they would quickly walk down the stairs and come to the salon. Even if their wives were upstairs, they would not contact them or come into the ladies’ section. Everything was done in great privacy – there were curtains by the backwash stations and at one time there were also curtains in the styling stations.” How times have changed and how society has progressed over the last 50 years!

  • Hairnews: Day Two in Bloemfontein

What a super day out in Bloemfontein... it was wonderful to meet the local EOHCB manager, Reita Crawford, and to visit so many, so different salons. There were salons based in malls. Salons that had moved from malls to houses. Salons that had moved from houses to malls... It's no wonder everyone in Bloemfontein has such fabulous hair. The day started with a visit to Salon Hannelie, in Fichardt Park. This really beautiful salon was the epitome of a really professional home salon, that makes brilliant use of its space. Hannelie, the owner, spoke to me about the vital role that the EOHCB plays in assisting businesses, and how important it is for every salon to be a member. We also did a salon video tour - watch out for it in the next week or two! Then it was off to meet Mark Trisos, who is the owner of the famous Maison Costa salon chain. Mark is an experienced businessman, who believes salons should be run as businesses if they are to succeed. He shared a wealth of advice which will be shared in a future Monday Business newsletter. Then I had the chance to tour all four of the Maison Costa salons. These stunning salons are brilliantly branded and have a really strong and positive culture - due to the fact that Maison Costa grow all their staff from apprentices, rather than hiring experienced staff - and they have many hairdressers who have been with the group for decades. Award winning icon Marlien Onderstall has celebrated her 50th anniversary working for this group. She is pictured here together with Mark. After that, I paid a flying visit to a small and simple salon where the vibe is all about friendliness and fun - Heavenly Hair in the Joy Centre, McCabe Street. And then it was home... to get out tomorrow's news report. There were so many salons I didn't manage to visit this time round, or would like to revisit... so Bloem, we'll be back! But what's that sound I hear now? I believe it might be a well earned glass of wine, calling me!

  • Lynette Manning Mould - An Industry Great Passes Away

By Garry Frasca and Nicky Roberts It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a dear friend and a hairdresser. Lynette Manning Mould passed away on Saturday evening at home and with her family. I first met Lynette at a company conference in the Drakensburg in 1985 and stood and listened in awe as she presented the models and trained us on the new perm Dulcia Vital. Lynette was mesmerising and from our very first meeting it was as if I had always known her. Lynette achieved many milestones in her career that spanned 44 years. Lynette was part of the team that represented South Africa at the World Hairdressing Championships in France in 1982. She was also Chairperson of what was then The International Hairdressing Club for three years and spread the word of hairdressing to all who would listen. Lynette will be remembered for her ability to listen and guide in her gentle but firm way and at the last count about 21 apprentices passed through her hands at Vogue Hair & Beauty in Boksburg. Lynette travelled the country doing demonstrations, her forte being long hair up-styling, a joy to watch. Lynette always found the time to spend with everyone who came into her space, I never once heard Lynette say a bad word about anyone. Lynette was the epitome of the consummate hairdresser, always beautifully turned out, never a hair out of place, beautifully manicured nails. Every client who left her chair must have felt special. I have been blessed to have known Lynette for the last 32 years. Although Lynette was no longer actively involved in hairdressing she still managed to do some of her old regulars and she had started a new venture with her daughter Tarryn - cake making for all occasions, specialising in fondant flowers and branching into butter-cream icing. For those of you who knew Lynette you will smile knowing the passion she would have put into this new venture. Lynette never said goodbye on the phone without saying give my love to Nicky, thank you. Your laughter will echo in our home forever. Lynette you leave us with heavy hearts but a lot of beautiful memories. There is going to be a lot of colour in heaven and angels with the best up-styles ever. Our condolences go out to your family, Robin your husband, Tarryn Griffiths your daughter, her husband and to all your family and friends. Lynette's Memorial service will be at 2pm on Thursday 6th July at Trinity Community Church in Sunward Park.
