  • Style File: Writhe

From the é SALON Creative Team, Australia, comes a collection that won the top honours at Australia’s 2017 Hair Expo Salon Team of the Year awards. “Writhe” is inspired by black and red art, in particular the abstract artworks of artist Russell Mills. Mills paints predominantly black and red portraits with the faces in focus yet the bodies are blurred with brushstrokes of red smudged throughout the works. What appealed to the é SALON Creative Team most about these paintings was the exaggerated shapes of the hair; they were inspired to create these shapes but to add an editorial aspect, something that was embellished and yet relatable to their salon work. • Shawn Odendaal Style Stunner: Whiter Shade of Pale

This incredible colour which defines and draws attention to the immaculate, trendy cut, was created by Shawn Odendaal at Paul James Hairdressing, Alberton. Cut: The cut was performed with a Wahl Bellina clipper. Colour: The client’s original base was a level 2-3. I used Matrix Light Master to bleach it up twice with 20-vol developer and Fibreplex treatment added. The processing time was about 50 minutes each time and this took it to a white colour, level 10. I then toned it with Color Sync 10v and 8a, and Blue Boost Color Sync with Sync Developer, 20 min. I dried the hair with a ghd dryer and styled it with Schwarzkopf Texture Clay and Matrix Style Fixer hairspray for the finishing touches! The client was very happy – the inspiration for the look came from a photo he showed me, and I gave him what he wanted and more!

  • Hair Trivia: Chaetophobia

Chaetophobia is a rare phobia which causes an irrational, abnormal and persistent fear of hair. The word is derived from Greek khaite which means ‘loose flowing hair’ and phobos meaning aversion or fear. People with chaetophobia have difficulty even looking at hair. A Welsh teenager, Emily White, who suffers from the phobia can’t even touch her own head because it makes her feel sick, and is unable to go on dates with boys unless they have shaved heads. Doctors believe this phobia can be linked to a fear of dirt or germs, with hair being perceived by the sufferer as dirty. However it can also occur in men who are starting to lose their hair, and have the phobia triggered as a result of anxiety. Sufferers can also fear animal hair and be unable to own pets. Intensive psychological therapy, medication, and the use of support groups are used to treat this phobia.

  • Yvonne Bryson: The Importance of Photo Shoot Work

Everyone knows that photographic work is important and beneficial – but why is this so, and what are the real benefits? Yvonne Bryson, artistic director of Pasquale Intercoiffure in Kempton Park, explains: It is the most amazing feeling of accomplishment when you've done a collection on a model before it has even hit the streets. There are so many benefits from doing it this way. And even if your look is over the top for salon work, once you've actually learnt how to do it, you tone it down and commercialise it to suit your clients needs. The techniques you learn to do always come in handy. You always discover easier ways of working than what you've been doing for so long and it makes your job interesting and so exciting. Clients love it when you use new techniques on them, be it colour or cut or styling. And when clients ask for something by name, you'd better know what it is. Social media is at everyone's fingertips and clients sometimes know more than you. They've become more visual than ever before, so if they show you a look, it's awesome when you know how to achieve it instead of talking her out of it because you're too embarrassed to say you don't know how.

  • Stop Press Announcement: Creative Colorist Medallists and Interviews for Goldwell South Africa Color

Congratulations to the talented medallists in the 2017 Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge. Gold medal winners Salome de Wet and Bernadine Malan will be flying to Barcelona in October, to represent South Africa at the Global Zoom World Championships. Wishing you all the very best! Gold Winner Salome de Wet – Scar Hair, Cape Town “Be the change you want to see in your craft”. Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? I just love what this competition has to offer. To compete on an international level was a lifelong dream of mine. Competition work helps you grow. It keeps you up to date with trends and encourages you to try new things. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? I just loved the Influx collection this year. I was inspired by the beautiful sunsets we get here in Cape Town combined with colour palettes, shapes and textures in some minerals and pearl shells. I studied up the collection, combined it with my mood board and model suitability. What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? I used Goldwell Silklift, Topchic, Colorance and Elumen. Silklift is such extremely gentle on the hair. You get clean lift and great condition. Elumen is my absolute favourite colour to work with when doing creative colour. The technology behind Elumen is just mind blowing. The durability, shine and reflect when working with Elumen is incredible. I love that is like a paintbox. All the colours are intermixable so you can create any shade. What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? I think like anything it starts with a passion. I love fashion and keeping with what is happening on the runways. It’s so easy nowadays with social networking. Instagram is my absolute favourite app to use. Online education is also available everywhere now. There is this big movement happening in our industry to share. I think it is brilliant. I keep up with various artists and make time to find inspiration by seeing what they are doing in their countries. I’m so lucky with my everyday clientele in the salon. My clients can be quite experimental and adventurous with their hair. They give me the opportunities to perfect my skill and take it to the next level. I also continuously attend education. We are very lucky to have had some international cutting and colouring artists teach at our salon lately. Competition work is such a great way to stay on trend. You are forced to study up a collection and find your own inspiration to design your work of art. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. Be the change you want to see in your craft. As a previous gold medallist, what do you expect from the international competition this year and what will your strategy be? I’m truly blessed to be competing at Globalzoom for the 5th time this year. Over the last few years I have loads of success but also made many mistakes. Every year I approach the competition by reflecting on all the areas where I can grow. To get a fresh outlook is very important. Internationally the competition is extremely strong. I am making sure my model’s hair is in the best possible condition. A serious training schedule is a great way to make sure your work is perfectly executed on the competition day. Silver Winner Yvonne Bryson - Pasquale Intercoiffure, Kempton Park, JHB “There are no shortcuts when you want to achieve the best”. Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? I entered on the spur of the moment last year after I did a shoot and realised that I used only Goldwell. I tried my luck and got a Bronze! The exposure I got from Goldwell was incredible, and the salon was marketed at minimal cost to Pasquale on social media. I decided to enter again, but to prep and follow the criteria as best I can. I did an enormous amount of research on In Flux, and noticed that two of the Looks trended towards a fashionable and current Mullet (which I'm obsessed with!) My model did not have a lot of length in her nape and hairline for the wispiness seen in the collection so I tried my utmost to create a Mullet with the length I had. It was impossible to get the softness that the collection required, but my ultimate goal was to do the best look that I possibly can. That way I would have a stunning end result/entry rather than an embarrassing one. When I finished my shoot, I wasn't happy with my colour or styling, as it was too commercial looking for me, so two weeks later I organised a reshoot and redid my colour from scratch, same makeup; garment and cut. If I wasn't happy with the second shoot for the competition I would not have entered. But I would still have had a great photo to use for marketing purposes, worth the time and money spent. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? I was intrigued by the following insert from the Color Zoom Collection: "Be enchanted by the fluidity, discover the darkness, let the iridescence illuminate" What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? I am obsessed with colour! Elumen is one of my favorites to use in the salon. Goldwell has an app that guides you with colour "cocktails" that the experts created, which is easy to use. I felt like a kid playing with paint! I loved it! What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? I'm obsessed with hair fashion. My down time in-between relaxing and clearing my mind, is research on hair. I don't really follow trends, but when I see great work, I download it into an album to backtrack later. I watch videos of cutting, styling, colouring....there is always room for improvement, you can never learn enough and you will never know it all. Nothing you do is perfect, there will always be something to improve. I love looking at all types of fashion shoots; all or any stylist's work; artistic and creative photos (not just hair). I'm always trying to figure out how something was done (sometimes I feel it's a curse... :-) Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. Planning! Then know that there are no shortcuts when you want to achieve the best.....deep breaths, and take your time; know when you've made a mistake and do it better next time. (That's two sentences, sorry!) Bronze Winner Donne Christof – Bscene Hairdesign by Donne, DBN “Love what you do... do it to the best of your ability.” Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? Photographic competitions are relatively new for me so every time I find it really a personal challenge as you learn from the year before. After achieving Silver last year I knew I could improve on my entry this year, learning from the last time I was truly happy with this year's entry. Being part of the challenge is also so much fun as you get swept up in creating your interpretation of the theme. Color Zoom is probably “the” Global photographic competition. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? The Northern Lights. I wanted to bring through the fluidity of coloured light in the dark mysterious sky, the crescent moon forming the shape in the fringe. What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? I used a variety of Elumen formulas I had worked out, and yes, I use the entire Goldwell colour range in the salon so I enjoy working with these brands daily. What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? Being inspired by other amazing artists, then creating something new and fresh making it your own. Don't copy others, rather be inspired to find your own way. Know where fashion is headed. Gratefully my mind never stops being creative which keeps one ahead and moving forward, crucial for any creative industry. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. Love what you do, do it to the best of your ability or don't bother doing it, and when passion moves; move with it...

  • Stop Press Announcement: New Talent Medallists and Interviews for Goldwell South Africa Color Zoom 2

Gold Winner Bernadine Malan - DNA, Bedfordview, JHB “I am really passionate about creating beautiful hair”. Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? Last year I had the honour of representing Goldwell South Africa at the Global Zoom event in Stockholm. Seeing the magnitude of this event and how invested Goldwell is in moving our industry forward, motivated me to the point that Color Zoom has become addictive. I am really passionate about creating beautiful hair, and Color Zoom offers the perfect platform to do just that. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? My biggest inspiration from the In Flux trend was the strong, blunt cutting lines broken up by soft texture in the interior. With the colour, I wanted to create mystery by having a seamless blend of colours, almost like oil on water. With the overall fashion and make-up, I was going for a certain amount of androgyny. What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? For my look, I used Goldwell Elumen. What I love most about Elumen is the shine and vibrancy you get out of it. The next best thing about Elumen is just how endless the possibilities are – it’s like mixing a palette of paints. What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? My first advice on staying in the loop on the latest fashion, is attending Goldwell’s amazing seminars, because even the basics are essential in setting trends. Goldwell also offers more advanced trend seminars that give you the ultimate in cutting-edge training. Second to that, social media offers such a wonderful platform for stylists to share and teach each other the latest trends. Don’t be scared to apply everything you have learned in your everyday work to excite your clients and attract new ones. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. You can never learn enough. As a previous gold medallist, what do you expect from the international competition this year and what will your strategy be? From what I saw last year, I am expecting my opponents to come with world class performance in terms of precision in application and tidiness in workspace. My game plan is to streamline my whole application to be as neat and focused as possible. Silver Winner India Choo, DNA, Bedfordview, JHB “Build your own pyramids and write your own hieroglyphics” Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? I chose to enter because I feel Goldwell puts so much energy into the excitement of our industry globally, and there are always new techniques to learn every year, forcing hairdressers to evolve. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? I always make sure I attend the Color Zoom seminars that Goldwell hosts. They give such insightful information and teach the techniques in-depth on the trend forecast presented. As for my inspiration, I had seen a picture of oil on water and decided to base my colour on a similar concept. What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? I used Elumen through the whole shape for this entry. The azure blue and slate grey were my favourite formulas in Elumen, from the In Flux colour formula booklet. What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? Education is where I always start, and I attend many different trainings from many different brands, empowering myself wherever I can. DNA Salon has been a great platform for me as the company always believes in empowering all staff to become the best they can be. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. Build your own pyramids and write your own hieroglyphics – a quote from Kendrick Lamar. I apply this saying to all my creative hairdressing, because to be original and evolve is so important. Bronze Winner Ashley da Fonseca, Funki Hair, Edenglen, JHB “I believe in setting your own trend and staying true to yourself”. Why did you enter Goldwell Color Zoom Challenge this year? It’s been a dream of mine to do competition work. I love challenging myself and gaining new experiences. What was the inspiration behind your medal-winning look? My interpretation of the In Flux collection was the Northern Lights as an inspiration. The bright lights flowing in the dark sky to me had the effect of fluidity, I loved the colours and the seamless flow between the colours. What colours did you use and did you enjoy working with those brands? I used Goldwell Elumen , TCC and Colorance. It is such a big range, and there is so much you can do with it. I especially like the Elumen. It is such a unique colour and there are so many benefits to it. It makes the hair so shiny, improves the condition of the hair, and there are no limits to what you can do with it. What does it take to keep ahead of trends and be a trendsetting hairdresser? I believe in setting your own trend and staying true to yourself and who you are. In this industry there are a lot of trends to follow which makes it easier but also harder to be a trendsetting hairdresser. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one sentence. Inspired to exceed your expectations.
