- Theresa Advises – Caring for Post-Festive-Season Clients
Returning to the salon after the festive season always brings its challenges, especially for your client’s colour. Clients want a quick-fix for the dehydration and damage caused by the summer sun. However, it's essential that every client's hair is given TLC before colouring. All clients love extra care, and we also need to build business through the lean times. Glossing, blending, and creative toning are therefore perfect services to delight your clients while building your business. Make sure your client books ahead and has the correct home care to restore her hair to its pre-holiday beauty.
- Q&A with Nuraan Moose, Gents’ Stylist at Partners Hair Design, Canal Walk
Nuuran talks about making clients happy and the gents' trend she's doing in the salon. Q: Why hairdressing? When did the passion start? A: The passion started when I was a little girl, playing with my dolls. I would cut their hair and give hideous styles which looked amazing to me. I chose hairdressing because I like seeing clients leave happy. I learned barbering at the Partners Hair Design Training Academy. Q: What do you most love about your daily work? A: I love interacting with clients and meeting new people as well playing around with different colours and styles. Q: What do you most enjoy doing in-salon? A: I enjoy doing fashion colours and different techniques of applying and going through the process to see the amazing outcome. Q: Where do you see trends going as we move into autumn/winter? A: Vibrant colours - but mainly warm colours with more funky styles as the trends are changing. Q: What colour techniques are most popular among your clientele? A: Amongst our gent clients highlights and foils are popular, but mainly greys and silvers.

- Transformation: Holiday Yellow to Cool Blonde by Eugene Venter, Paul James Hairdressing
For the holidays, senior stylist and manager Eugene Venter created a fabulously funky yellow effect for his client – and then turned it back into a stylish cool blonde when it was back to work time! Here’s how he performed this stunning change. For my summer yellow fun in the sun hair I used Matrix 5mg and 10vol on the roots colorblended into Matrix 7mg with 10vol on the mid-lengths, and did full ombre foils on the ends using Matrix Lightmaster and 20vol. It was processed for 35min. The hair lifted to a light yellow. I toned the hair using half Matrix Color Sync 10g and Matrix Soboost Yellow with Sync Developer and processed it for 30 min. The hair was rinsed and I then put Punked Yellow over and processed it for 30min. After the holidays the yellow had washed out to a pale yellow. When she came back for her back to work hair I only needed to tone her hair (as the base color was still beautiful) using Matrix Color Sync 10ml 10V, 10ml 8A and 5 ml 3VV and Sync Developer. After I toned the hair I used the new Brass Off range from Matrix Total Results. The new range has a very strong blue pigment in it which I used to eliminate unwanted the orange tones in the hair and enhance the violet blonde in the ombre. - Giovanni Battista’s Hair Museum
The stunning, newly renovated Giovanni Battista salon in Riverside shopping centre, Bryanston, features a “hair museum” corner where some incredible collector’s items can be found. Over the years, Giovanni acquired one of only two perming machines that still exist in South Africa, as well as an antique barber chair which a Pretoria salon owner sold to him on condition he never sold it on. Glass cupboards contain early model hairdryers we can barely recognise today, hairdressing scissors that are decades old, as well as brushes, combs, clips and other items. “I always keep my eyes open for old equipment that is being sold, to add to the collection,” Giovanni explains, believing that it is important to record our heritage of hairdressing, and respect and preserve the tools and equipment that were used in previous eras. Look out for a full decor tour of the beautiful Giovanni Battista salon in an upcoming Hairnews.
