- Theresa Advises: Growing your Colour Business in Tough Times
I have had many stylists ask me what they can do to become busier in these economic times. Firstly, we need to understand that a large percentage of our clients still have their hair done in “these economic times”, they just have their colour done less often - and we as stylists allow that. We should encourage our clients to see us at least once every four to six weeks by doing proper consultations and explaining the dynamics of a colour’s lifespan. Doing this will set us apart from the rest. As was the philosophy of the late, great Vidal Sassoon: don’t be average like everyone else. Technical ability allows us to step up in these times: knowing how to encourage extra services and follow up appointments. The new Wellaplex is an excellent example of what to use to do both these things. Upsell the colouring process by adding the Wellaplex and then invite your clients back for a standalone treatment in between colour appointments. Use add-on colour services like an Illumina glossing to boost the vibrancy of colour between regrowth touch-ups. Use quieter times for education and take value in what your educator suggests.

- Spoilt Salon: Hair as Art Show
In May 2018, Spoilt salon owner Shoneez Warrington hosted an original show at Youngblood Art Gallery on Bree Street. Here, Spoilt Hair & Nails showed off its creative flair with a celebration of hair as art. “The inspiration for our show was the love of art and hair,” Shoneez explains. “We were inspired to see if we could combine the two into an exhibition, which is what we achieved. This show was all ours and all creations were done by our team, from outfits to hair, and from the original idea, right through to the final execution.” Although the main aim was to show off the salon’s creative side, the event was also a wonderful teambuilder that brought Spoilt staff closer in creative collaboration, while wowing all the guests. The Spoilt team are already dreaming up ideas for their next show! Spoilt Hair & Nails, Green Point 021 434 7112

- Hair Heroes: Victor Algranti
By Clinton Valjeaux, Owner: Jeauval Hair Salons While at school, before I started my career as a hairstylist, I saw Victor on TV – a celebrity hairdresser working his magic on the Miss SA finalists. He was a showman personified in the industry, although understated at times. Later I had the privilege of meeting him, and so began our friendship, which has lasted more than 25 years. Victor owned and ran Hair & Beauty magazine for many years. He contributed ideas towards the creation of the Hairstylist of the Year competition, and he gave input to our first complete Jeauval product line. Victor, I salute you... you are an industry icon, a talented hairstylist, and now a businessman and product developer. Your valuable contribution to the South African hairdressing industry deserves to be recognised. As an icon and role model, you have inspired with your incredible commitment and achievements. Being the humble man you are, I hope you enjoy the surprise of seeing this Hair Heroes profile in Hairnews! God bless you for many more, Sir Victor! Your honoured and privileged friend, Clinton Valjeaux
