  • REF Create the Look: Beach Waves, Undone Texture & Perfect Ponytails

The spotlight is on two of REF’s versatile superstar styling products, Ocean Mist and Thickening Spray, which are ideal for creating modern, trendy looks with ease, both in the salon, and at home. Here is more on these products, and the how-tos. Ocean Mist This mineral-rich sea salt spray adds texture, density, and an after-beach feeling to hair, leaving it natural looking with a matte finish and a soft, natural effect. It’s ideal for managing curls as well as for upstyling. Twist sections for additional definition. Allow the hair to finish drying naturally – or alternatively dry it using the cool setting with a hairdryer. Other Versatile Uses for Ocean Mist Breathe Life into Unwashed Hair: Ocean Mist is ideal for keeping hair looking great for one final day between washes. Undone Texture: It can also be used to give braids and upstyles more texture, by lightly spritzing over the desired area and massaging into the hair for an “undone” look. From Groomed Curls to Messy Waves: Using Ocean Mist on hair that has been curled with a hot tool will make the look messier, breaking down the curls into more natural waves REF Thickening Spray This nourishing, volumizing spray is perfect for a quick boost of texture, adding density and fullness to hair, and giving extra body to fine or thin hair. The product remains flexible and touchable while protecting the hair from humidity. If Thickening Spray is used all over the head, before a quick blow dry, it will make the hair look fuller and will make the ponytail look much more styled, improving it 1000 percent! Clients can rough up their hair a bit before pulling it into the ponytail, and once in the ponytail they should gently tug at the hair on the sides and the crown, to create more volume. Love these looks? Why not try the products! Contact us to try out these incredible products, and find out how the REF range can benefit your clients and salon. • Making the Move to a New City: Interview with Kenneth Daniel-Smith

Two years ago, Kenneth Daniel-Smith moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town – but he travels back to Johannesburg twice a month to look after his loyal clients there. This might sound exhausting but Kenneth loves the Cape Town lifestyle. Here’s an interview on why he made the move and his advice for other inland hairstylists considering moving to a coastal city. Q: How do you divide your time between Johannesburg and Cape Town? A: I go back to Johannesburg for a long weekend on the middle and the end of every month. My Jo’burg clients are mostly on a four or six week schedule so this suits them perfectly and they are happy. However as I build my clientele here, I am planning to change this and fly back to Johannesburg just once a month, for a full week. Q: Why did you make the big move to Cape Town? A: I made a lifestyle change in moving here. I found in Johannesburg I was on a treadmill, just working, going to gym and going home. Here in Cape Town there is so much more to do, and although I knew I would earn less while building up my new clientele, the bonus is that so much in Cape Town is free – the beach, the mountain. So it is a better quality of life for me. Q: What is your advice to other hairstylists planning to make a similar move to a coastal area? A: Plan where you stay as rents can be much more expensive than you would think. They are very high in Cape Town for example, so be prepared to live out of town and start off cheaply in a small place. Also understand it will take you a while to build up a clientele and it is not a quick process. Cape Town, like other coastal areas, is also much more seasonal than an inland area, and here the busiest time is from November to February. Q: What about choosing the right salon? A: This is very important and not easy as you are coming into an unknown area. You may find the first one you choose is not the right one for you, so do as much research as you can before deciding where you would like to work – I have found the perfect salon for me at Capelli in Blouberg. • Creative Excellence Awarded at TrendVision 2019

A record turnout of more than 300 of South Africa’s hairdressing community attended the Wella TrendVision 2019 Awards on Sunday evening at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. The event, hosted by Modern Hair & Beauty, was filled with creative excellence, entertainment and fierce hair fashion. Before culminating in the announcement of the TrendVision Color Artist of the Year and TrendVision Creative Artist of the Year, those gathered were treated to non-stop banter by MC Schalk Bezuidenhout. As the opener, Reto Camichel brought to the stage his tactile and form-inspired Reto Sculpt show. Raw clay was used as a means to connect with the 3-dimensional aspect of hairstyle creation. Reto meticulously sculpted upon a model’s head building form and shape and movement within the clay. His show has recently been performed to critical acclaim in Germany and the US. This was followed by the much-anticipated presentation of the TrendVision Color Vision and Creative Vision finalist styles. The audience responded generously to the visual beauty of every piece presented on the stage. What came next was sensational! Intercoiffure, under the leadership of President Ezra Isaacs and concept artist Anita Baatjes, showcased a stunning narrative journey through colour. The storytelling began with the physical interpretation of Wella’s new KPME+ in the form of a spike-haired woodland nymph. The nymph led the audience on a journey that included tones represented by wild animals, a crystal-like snow queen and bright-haired fairies. A surprise twist in the narrative was the unveiling of the KPME+ iconic collection by Johannesburg Intercoiffure stylists. The Intercoiffure show ended in a dramatic flair with a display of highly creative Avant Garde styles. After a short breather, the graduating class of 2019 Master Color Expert Programme was presented with certificates of achievement. Singled out amongst the class of 26 graduates were top achievers, Nelmari Kruger (94,5%), Nicolas Anamourlis (94,4%) and Grant Harper (90%). Wella educators Mariska Treurnicht, Sheila Da Silva and Sybil Johari were recipients of awards for Excellence in Education. Chris Stofberg, MD Modern Hair & Beauty, bade a moving and fond farewell to industry icon and doyenne, Theresa Gouws. Theresa has retired with her husband to the quaintly named Paradise Beach in the Eastern Cape. She will continue to service the industry as an independent educator. TrendVision Color Artist 2018, Guy Kleinhaus took to the stage next. As a charismatic and natural performer, Kleinhaus took an active role in showcasing youth culture. A visual dichotomy of austere and monochromatic clothing offset by fun, vibrant hair colour served to represent a culture with the choice of freedom of expression. Kleinhaus and his cast ended the show perfectly with a flurry of pouty groufies. The show continued with 3 time TrendVision winner, Kelly Greening, showcasing the future of ethnic hair. Greening’s entirely ethnic cast wore gritty and punk-like colour creations that were then converted into entirely new looks with the addition of funky and intricate hairpieces. With the highlight of the evening drawing nearer and the finalists preparing backstage for the announcement of the TrendVision 2019 winners, Modern Hair & Beauty took the opportunity to present its annual Business Awards. Chris Stofberg and Leonard Watts, National Sales Manager presented the following awards: Outstanding Contribution to the Hair Industry: Anita Baatjes System Professional Salon of the Year 2019: Absolut Hair, Cape Town Wella Professionals Colour Salon of the Year 2019: The Salon, Bloemfontein Wella Professionals Retail Salon of the Year 2019: DJ Hairdressing, Durban Kadus Professional Colour Salon of the Year: Hair I am, Durban Kadus Professional Retail Salon of the Year: Salon Zinadri, Free State Nioxin Retail Salon of the Year: Solitaire Hair by Mariana, Limpopo Chad Hanna delivered his trademark classical, balletic creations ... but with a twist. Lending from the fuller styles and precise cuts of the 80s, Chad merged and modernised to deliver styles that emphasise natural beauty and femininity. His cheeky take on the past, using now-defunct video cassette tape, was well-received! The People’s Choice Award Color Artist 2019 went to Juane van der Walt and the People’s Choice Award Creative Artist 2019 went to Carla Klue. And finally, after a flurry of excitement and settling down it was onto the moment everyone was waiting for. Charles Junior Louw, who was bronze finalist in last year’s colour category, was awarded the Creative Artist of the Year 2019. During a visit to Paris, Louw was struck by the shape and beauty of the modern, yet classical glass pyramid at the Louvre and the inverted triangle beneath the surface. Of his winning creation, he had this to say, “I saw the future that day. The pyramid was not an object, it was a shape I could interpret into a soft, striking, modern and edgy hairstyle.” Louw attributes his vision to Stephen Moody, “He inspired and changed my life at a Wella workshop I attended in 2018. He taught me to look and to use what I see to create!” Florin Neacsu is no stranger to winning. He reprised his 2017 achievement by taking the title Color Artist of the Year 2019. The colours of his delicate creation were inspired by tropical pink and white frangipani blooms he encountered in Ubud, Bali. “Nature inspires me. The Banyan tree found in Ubud gave me the inspiration for the swaying veil above the fringe to create the overall softness of the style.” Neacsu planned and prepared his entry over a long period. At first, he practised on doll heads, then he adjusted his thinking and techniques and performed trials on his model before submitting his final entry. His winning work includes three colour techniques: freehand, block colour and contrast framing. American author Zig Ziglar sums it up, “You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must planto win, prepareto win, and expectto win.” Sunday night’s TrendVision 2019 Award winners, Charles Junior Louw and Florin Neacsu planned, prepared and ultimately won the top prizes in hairdressing. They will be attending the ITVA Creative Retreat in Spain in March 2020. Well done and congratulations! Thank you to the judges for their tireless work and dedication: Chad Hanna, Terry Scott, Jean Witte, Ezra Isaacs, Jadie Herbst, Nelmari Kruger, Tristan Hawkins and Jassy McKenzie.
