  • Styles: The World by Olga Garcia, Spain

The World embraces the diversity of women in the world and their different ways of becoming brides. That makes it a fresh, versatile and creative collection when it comes to playing the bride. The looks convey comfort as a desire not to be corseted, but to let personality flow. Therefore, neither extensions nor fillers are used, but hair is expressed through its textures, with a romantic and racial touch. The bangs are the main axis, the protagonists in each hairstyle. Since when placed close to the face they are always visible, they were chosen as the focal point of the look. These are not collected, and go unnoticed by being on the nape, where they are more difficult to see. The collection is a tribute to the women of the world with different bridal models, with a unique personality, more confident, so that their day is very special and they can enjoy the moment in its fullness. • EOHCB Covid-19: Occupational Health and Safety Directive for Vaccinations

The Minister of Employment and Labour has published, in the Government Gazette, a new consolidated COVID-19 Direction on Occupational Health and Safety in the Workplace (Revised OHS Direction). The Revised OHS Direction replaces the Direction that was published on 1 October 2020. Access to the revised Consolidated OHS Direction can be obtained on the EOHCB website under the resources tab (OHS IN THE WORKPLACE - COVID-19 VACCINATIONS - UPDATED DIRECTIVE - 11 JUNE 2021) Apart from a number of minor technical changes, the principal changes contained in Revised OHS Direction concern the measures employers will be required to put in place in so far as the vaccination of workers is concerned. The Revised OHS Direction was engaged on at length at NEDLAC with all social partners providing input on how best to ensure that employers discharge their general statutory duties, as contained in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (OHSA) which is to “provide a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees and persons other than those in his employment who may be directly affected by his activities are not thereby exposed to hazards to their health or safety.” Although the Revised OHS Direction does not make it mandatory for all workers to be vaccinated, it does make provision for those employers who, as a result of operational requirements, intend to make C19 vaccinations mandatory to do the following: Within 21 days from the date of publication of the Revised OHS Direction, to identify, by way of a written risk assessment, those employees who by virtue of the risk of transmission through their work or their risk for severe COVID-19 disease or death due to their age or comorbidities, must be vaccinated. Once the employees in step (1) have been identified, an employer must amend its COVID-19 plan to include the measures it will implement to ensure the vaccination of those employees (as and when they become eligible for vaccination in terms of Government’s phased roll-out plan). In amending a COVID-19 plan to make provision for mandatory vaccinations, an employer must take into account the guidelines set out in Annexure C of the Revised OHS Direction and must also take into account the constitutional rights of its employees. If an employee refuses, despite the risk assessment conducted by an employer identifying that employee as high risk, to take the vaccine, an employer must follow the steps contained in paragraph 5 (2) of Annexure C. There is nothing contained in the Revised OHS Direction which prohibits an employer from dismissing an employee who has been identified as high risk and who has refused to be vaccinated (and cannot be reasonably accommodated) but employers are encouraged, before considering such action, to seek labour relations support through the EOHCB given the complexities of such a dismissal. Most notably, employers are alerted to the fact that there are provisions contained in the Revised OHS Direction which apply regardless of whether an employer has decided to make vaccinations mandatory or not. In brief, these are as follows: Employers must provide their employees information on the nature of the COVID-19 vaccines used in South Africa, the benefits of being vaccinated and the nature of the side effects that can be experienced when a person is vaccinated. Employers must assist employees to register on the EVDS portal (when employees become eligible to register for their vaccination). Employers must give employees paid time off work to be vaccinated if the date and time allocated to an employee is during hours that the employee is ordinarily at work. The EOHCB encourages all employers, in the interest of health and safety at workplaces, to regularly provide their employees with accurate and up to date information concerning vaccines as to ensure that employees are in a position to make an informed decision when they become eligible for vaccination. Keep up to date with the latest industry news and competition updates by liking EOHCB’s Facebook page HERE. Web: www.eohcb.co.za/contact-

  • Introducing Cerese Bouwer and Kyle van Wyk, Kao South Africa Ambassadors

Kao South Africa is proud to introduce two talented and dynamic brand ambassadors to the industry. Meet Cerese Bouwer, Kao Salon Brand Ambassador Goldwell KMS, and Kyle van Wyk, Kao Salon Brand Ambassador KMS. Cerese Bouwer: Kao Salon Brand Ambassador Goldwell KMS Ever since starting her hairdressing studies at Terenzo International Academy, Cerese Bouwer admits she has been on an incredible journey. “Hairdressing has completely changed my world,” she says. When she had just started high school, her stepfather (also Terence’s stepfather) said that she was a born hairdresser and should go into the industry. “Terence is still one of my biggest role models because he never stops innovating,” she says. Four years ago, Cerese worked for a salon that introduced her to Goldwell. She fell in love with the brand. “There is always something new being launched, and it is so innovative. They push stylists and creatives and colour artists with new technology and liquid tools, which keeps the industry alive and exciting. In 2019, in KZN, Cerese decided to open her own salon, Cerese Hair Design. “Six months later along came lockdown! It was a stressful time but we managed to survive and bounced back better than ever. I since purchased my own property where I moved my salon. We have a choice of outdoor stations, two qualified stylists and two incredible assistants. I am so proud of my amazing team – we are humble and happy working together.” The salon, based in Hillcrest, was fortunately not directly affected by the recent riots. “A while ago one of my clients asked me what I wanted to do career wise, and I told her I wanted to be a leading hairdresser. She said, “But you’re in Hillcrest. How can you?” That pushed me even harder to try,” she says. Cerese has since built a reputation as the “blonde doctor” of Hillcrest thanks to her specialisation in blonde. The majority of her clients are blonde, and she does a lot of colour services. “For a while I didn’t even know I had this title. A client called in a panic asking for the “blonde doctor” and I thought she meant the medical rooms across the road. But no, it was me!” Cerese adores Goldwell’s wide variety of lighteners that are effective and versatile and which respect the hair’s condition. Bondpro is one of her go-to products for a healthy blonde result. “The colour and blonding tools are incredible. It’s all about lifting and reconstructing together,” she says. Technique wise, her favourites are full blonde transformations and freehand balayage. She’s pleased that lockdown gave clients more time to catch up on international trends, and clients who were previously “stuck” on ash blonde are now open to trying copper, strawberry, and the warmer golden tones as they have seen them overseas. “It’s easier to promote them when clients understand them,” she explains. She was thrilled to become a brand ambassador for Kao. “It is easy to represent such an amazing company and brands. Ever since I was introduced to the Goldwell range, and learned about brand ambassadors, I had a dream that I would be a brand ambassador for this incredible company.” Her first reaction was to burst into tears. “It was a very emotional time for me. I am thrilled to represent a brand I believe in. Eight months after losing my father, among all the chaos of moving premises and building my business, the news was overwhelming.” When lockdown allows, Cerese would love to travel overseas to meet more of the Kao salon family and to go to the Goldwell factory to see how the products are made. “Watching the scientists working on the colours would be a dream come true,” she admits. “From a personal point of view I would like to say – never give up on your dreams. No matter where you come from, you can be anything you want to be. Push for it, put in the extra hours, go through the meltdowns and tears. Don’t give up, because if you believe in your brand, your brand will believe in you.” Follow Cerese’s Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ceresehairdesign Kyle van Wyk: Kao Salon Brand Ambassador KMS Kyle van Wyk is a second generation hairdresser, and creativity and the love of hair runs in his family. Today, he co-owns Texture Incorporated, a salon in Strand, Cape Town, together with his mother Suzette, and a team of two other amazing hairstylists. “My love for KMS started in 2013 in my sister’s salon,” Kyle explains. “I didn’t know it too well but as I worked with it I started following the brand. I fell even more in love and started stocking it. Especially with today’s emphasis on social media, the finish of a style is so important. KMS is so innovative with their Start, Style, Finish progression. It has everything you need for hair prep and all kinds of styling, and it’s so easy to create the latest trends.” Kyle loves to experiment and is never happier than when trying out something new. His current favourite product is Therma Shape, a heat protective styling product that speeds up the blowdry process. He also loves the new KMS Solid shampoo bars for their green, eco- friendly ethos and innovation. “It’s a brilliant concept,” he says. Kyle is very proud to be an ambassador for KMS. “I’m looking forward to the content creation, the videos and photos. It’s an honour, that has given me an extra push in my career and inspired me to keep my work to an even higher standard. It has made me more disciplined, and encouraged me to strive for greater perfection. My clients tease me that I am now famous! They are very proud of me and see it as a big achievement that I have accomplished.” Kyle is looking forward to doing more collaborative shoots with other salons, and getting more involved in creative work. “With lockdown restrictions it can be more difficult to do the shoots in the way you want, so this is definitely a plan for the future. I will be so excited when lockdown lifts to a level where this is possible and we can return to a new normal,” he says. Another goal is getting into education and doing stage work and holding seminars. “I am very shy by nature and prefer one on ones with my clients but I would like to push myself out of my comfort zone and do classes and seminars. Being an ambassador has motivated me to do this.” Follow Kyle’s salon Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/textureinc For all local enquiries about Goldwell and KMS brands, please call 011 312 5070 or email kevin.tabilo@kao.com

  • Groomed Academy Interviews Mike Taylor

Eric Way, founder of Groomed Academy South Africa, is currently in the UK. His first stop was at the magnificent Mike Taylor Academy in Poole, where he interviewed Mike himself. Mike is a massively experienced barber and businessman, who brings his expertise to the online courses available through Groomed Academy, which are run in conjunction with the Mike Taylor Academy and now offer dual certification in South Africa and the UK. This means even more career choices and exciting international prospects for barbers who graduate! Eric: Congratulations on the phenomenal wins in the Modern Barber Awards! Mike Taylor – Winner: Best business leader in Modern Barber awards Academy – Winner: Best training in Modern Barber awards What does this win mean to you and what gave you and the academy the winning edge? Mike: The Modern Barber Awards are the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate the quality of training we deliver. Winning for the third year in a row really validates all of the hard work that we put into our education and it’s great to show that not everything is in the big cities! We work really hard to differentiate ourselves from other academies and ensure that our training is the perfect example of how education can meet commerciality. We don’t work like a conveyor belt system, we care for each of our learners and believe we have a personal responsibility to train them to a high enough standard to get a job when they leave. Eric: Why did you start the academy and what it has taken to build Mike Taylor Academy into what it is today? Mike: Mike Taylor Education has been developed over a number of years and I believe that is what has made it successful. We have taken no shortcuts, we’ve developed slowly over time to ensure it’s done right. We’ve grown a good client base to ensure our learners have enough clients and we will never overbook our courses so that we can make sure that all of our learners are getting enough practical experience throughout their course. Eric: What are the most important qualities and skills for a modern barber to succeed? Mike: I believe that the most important qualities and skills are having strong foundations. Too many new barbers aren’t taught the basics. It’s all well and good knowing how to fade now but short hair won’t be in fashion forever so understanding the foundations will put you in good stead for life - not just the next few years. Eric: What is the skill that most barbers lack and the one that needs most work in today’s market? Mike: Apart from the above - Hygiene! I really believe cleanliness is so important in the barbershop and not enough barbers keep their tools clean and sterilised and keep the shop clean and tidy. With the COVID pandemic, one positive thing that may come out of it is that peoples’ levels of hygiene have hopefully improved. Eric: How have barbering trends evolved over the past few years? Mike: I can definitely see more of a men’s hairdressing vibe coming back into barbering. Colours and perms are big with men currently and being able to do a blow-dry is vital in today’s barbershop. Eric: Let’s talk about post-pandemic services. What the client is expecting in these times? How can today’s barber fulfil their needs? Mike: I believe that cleanliness is key. Not everyone looks for the cheapest barbershop around - people want quality. Throughout the past 18 months hygienic and cleanliness in the barbershops has improved massively and in my view, many of these changes should stay - and will stay in my shops and academies. I think as a whole, we’ve all been educated on how easily germs can spread and many people will be more conscious of cleanliness and infection prevention moving forward. Eric: How can barbers take a more business-minded approach to their daily work in order to increase their turnover and client retention? Mike: Barbers shouldn’t be afraid to speak to their clients about what would/wouldn’t work for their hair and offer advice on retail and other services. We are the professionals and most clients like to be educated on what will work for them. I always explain to my learners that men are happy to pay £100 (nearly R2,000) for a nice aftershave so why wouldn’t they want to spend £15 (R295) on a hair product?! Usually, it’s not that clients don’t want to spend the money, it that clients just don’t understand why they need this product or that shampoo etc. Eric: In South Africa we are currently faced with Level 4 Lockdown which has resulted in many clients not returning to the Barbershops and salons, what would be your suggestion on how to keep South African barbers and hairstylists motivated during these tough times and name a special offer you feel could be very attractive to lure clients back in to the premises? Mike: I think its key for clients to feel safe. If you are wearing the correct PPE, social distancing properly, washing hands between clients etc then you are doing all you can for your clients. In the UK we have many clients that feel socially responsible to support small businesses and throughout lockdown our barbers received messages of support from their clients asking to buy gift vouchers or prepay for appointments to help financially support them. In these times people want to help people so as long as you’re doing everything you can then the clients will return. To stay motivated - make the most of these lockdowns and quiet times and up skill. There is so much online education around at the moment including our online Education Zone so even in lockdowns you can update your knowledge, watch new techniques and get inspired.
