  • When Challenge Meets Opportunity: Shift Hair & Beauty and the SA Launch of 72 Hair Smoothing

The Story Shift Hair & Beauty was founded in 2019 by Shaun Wiegand, who is no newcomer to our industry. He describes his story and the journey to 2022. Starting as a sales rep for a leading brand back in 1997, at 21 years of age, and not knowing exactly what career path to take, Shaun had a chance interview with Schwarzkopf and accepted the job, only to be thrown in the deep end with his area list in one hand and a map book in the other – yes, an old map book! With sample products to show-and-tell, he took off to conquer the world and was instantly drawn to the amazing people in the industry. When asked what he loves most about our industry, his answer is simple: “The people. I do what I do because of the people I meet and get to engage with on a daily basis whilst building wonderful relationships in the process. It’s not about selling a shampoo or a tint, it's about being a day-maker! Everyday is different and every conversation is a new experience.” Shaun took some time out for a few years on a personal journey and re-entered the industry in 2019, with his foot firmly on the 'start' line again. “When you find your passion, there you will find fulfilment”. Falling back in love with all that the industry and people have to offer, he started the journey of reinventing himself, and founded SHIFT HOLDINGS. The emphasis being on SHIFT. The idea behind this was to change the way you look at things: “Shift your thoughts, Shift your Focus and you will Shift your life”. 72 HAIR SMOOTHING SYSTEM An exciting opportunity for the South African Industry SHIFT, already importing the conditioning MYCOLOR tint range, discovered the 72 HAIR Smoothing System, a certified vegan range, from the UK and forged a lasting partnership with the Green family and founders of the 72 HAIR brand. Then, March 26th 2020 hit... BOOM, we were in lockdown and COVID-19 had hit us like a wrecking ball. Everything worldwide came to a grinding halt! “Following the principles and foundation of what SHIFT stands for - change focus and do what you can with what you have - the focus shifted to online social media marketing, with the huge support of my partner, Julie Du Toit, a social media expert and very patient, loving supporter of me…Thank you my special person. “Becoming more active on social media gave the leads for salons wanting to see the 72HAIR brand as soon as we opened up for business again. Back on track and building up was un-paused and we were on a natural high again”. Doors started opening, and SHIFT began collaboration with HAIRCAIR in Cape Town, mutually supporting each other’s brands. SHIFT Hair & Beauty now works with multiple leading brands such as LABEL.M by Toni & Guy, TangleTeezer, Bluebeards Revenge, Invissibobble, LaTweez, That’s So Tanning… And with more exciting news COMING SOON, SHIFT Hair & Beauty will be launching two additional international brands in the very near future, so be sure to look out on our social media channels for the exciting launch dates! For now, here is more about the multi-year, multi award winning brand….72 HAIR Smoothing System. The 72 Hair Story: For The Love of Hair 72 Hair believe in keeping things simple. 72 Hair is a keratin smoothing range, specifically designed to tame the frizz out in all hair types. This formaldehyde-free keratin treatment does not chemically change the hair structure, but rather bonds with the internal hair structure to eliminate frizz, and allow more manageability of the hair, whilst strengthening the hair and giving extreme shine. Same-Day Smooth and Tint What’s also fantastic about 72 Hair Smoothing System is that you can tint on the SAME day without any change to the colour pigments. The general trend nowadays is not dead straight hair, but natural looking, manageable hair with movement, with a shorter blow dry time. By changing the development time and amount of time you flatiron the hair, you can either eliminate frizz whilst keeping the curl, or you can extend the development time, and number of passes with an iron to have a straighter, smoother finish, giving more flexibility to your clients’ needs. Long-lasting Effects Being a progressive treatment, it means that the more the client has it done in salon (usually every 12 weeks), the straighter and longer lasting the effect is. As a stylist, you can give your client exactly what they’re looking for with each service. • EOHCB: Why Is Mental Wellness Important?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Mental wellbeing does not have a single universal definition, but it does encompass factors such as: • The sense of feeling good about us and being able to function well individually or in relationships • The ability to deal with the ups and downs of life, such as coping with challenges and making the most of opportunities • The feeling of connection to our community and surroundings • Having control and freedom over our lives • Having a sense of purpose and feeling valued Good mental health is characterised by a person's ability to fulfil several key functions and activities, including: • The ability to learn. • The ability to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions. • The ability to form and maintain good relationships with others. Try these tips to keep your balance, or re-balance yourself. Value yourself: Treat yourself with kindness and respect and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favourite projects or broaden your horizons. Do a daily crossword puzzle, plant a garden, take dance lessons, learn to play an instrument, or become fluent in another language. Take care of your body: Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure to: • Eat nutritious meals • Avoid smoking and vaping • Drink plenty of water • Exercise, which helps decrease depression and anxiety and improve moods • Get enough sleep. Surround yourself with good people: People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive family members and friends or seek out activities where you can meet new people, such as a club, class, or support group. Give yourself: Volunteer your time and energy to help someone else. You'll feel good about doing something tangible to help someone in need — and it is a great way to meet new people. Learn how to deal with stress: Like it or not, stress is a part of life. Practice good coping skills: Try One-Minute Stress Strategies, do Tai Chi, exercise, take a nature walk, play with your pet, or try journal writing as a stress reducer. Also, remember to smile and see the humour in life. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain, relax your body and reduce stress. Quiet your mind: Try meditating, mindfulness and/or prayer. Relaxation exercises and prayer can improve your state of mind and outlook on life. In fact, research shows that meditation may help you feel calm and enhance the effects of therapy. Set realistic goals: Decide what you want to achieve academically, professionally, and personally, and write down the steps you need to realise your goals. Aim high but be realistic and do not over-schedule. You will enjoy a tremendous sense of accomplishment and selfworth as you progress toward your goal. Break up the monotony: Although our routines make us more efficient and enhance our feelings of security and safety, a little change of pace can perk up a tedious schedule. Alter your jogging route, plan a road-trip, take a walk in a different park, hang some new pictures, or try a new restaurant. Avoid alcohol and other drugs: Keep alcohol use to a minimum and avoid other drugs. Sometimes people use alcohol and other drugs to "self-medicate" but, alcohol and other drugs only aggravate problems. Get help when you need it: Seeking help is a sign of strength, not a weakness, and it is important to remember that treatment is effective. People who get appropriate care can recover from mental illness and addiction and lead full, rewarding lives. • London Wellness Academy: Train in June, Board in August - Chantal Mulder on Cruise Ship Spa Life

A qualified hairstylist for almost 20 years, Chantal Mulder tells us of her fascinating experiences in the onboard spa lifestyle and confirms that once the sea life has taken hold of you, it can open doors for your future – whether onboard permanently or land-based career opportunities, near and far. She is currently embarked on an exciting Alaskan cruise! Q: What drew you to the cruise ship spa life? What drew me to the cruise ship spa life was the opportunity to earn in dollars. To travel while doing so was such an added bonus. I quickly fell in love with seeing the world and exploring new places. Q: What did your London Wellness Academy training programme include? I'm a qualified hairstylists so the main focus for me was on hairdressing. I received further training in hair products as well as spa products for massaging and facials. I got training on various hair treatments, mini facials, men’s grooming, teeth whitening, and a few massaging therapies, as well as sales training. Q: What hours can a stylist or beautician expect to work on board? A typical sea day will be 12 to 13 hours with an hour for lunch and an hour break for dinner. It sounds like a very long day and some days it is. You do get used to it and believe me, after work you'll still have energy to go out or go to the gym. Some sea days won't be that busy so then you promote the spa in other areas. The nice thing is you're always surrounded with friends from the spa or other departments. On some port days you get time off depending on your work schedule. Your spa manager will create a schedule to ensure you get your appropriate time off so you can go and explore the beautiful ports where the cruise ship docks. Q: What’s the best part of your day? To explore and experience new destinations and sharing that with your friends onboard. The friendships that you create onboard is incredible. It's a completely different lifestyle and only your friends onboard or other crew members truly understand life at sea. Q: How does it differ from a land-based salon experience? Oh, it's so much more intense but in a good way. The friendships and close bonds are incredible. You make friends from all around the world. You get to meet guests from around the world. The sales training and experience with guests from all over will shape you tremendously. Working with international guests gives you a much different experience and outlook in life. Q: What are the average earnings? You can earn between R30 0000 to R50 000 or more per month depending on how much effort you put in. Retail is very important in the spa and adds to your income Q: What are the career options after completing a contract? You can continue in the spa as a therapist or you can do management training and become a spa manager. You have the opportunity to go to head office, or with your international experience in the spa on your resume, you can go work in a spa in resorts. I know Dubai is a good option as well. It will open doors for you, it's up to you to grab those opportunities! I absolutely loved the spa life, I made the most incredible memories with friends in beautiful destinations. There are hard moments where you will be tired and miss your family, but that's normal - and those fleeting moments will make you stronger and more resilient. This will change your life and will open doors to new opportunities. I've met my husband onboard and we now travel together and work together. I've seen so much of the world and I'm not yet done! Who doesn't want to see the world and make money while doing so? Sign up now for your confidential interview and take the first step to a new life and new adventures! It is the search for rebirth, for the connection with nature. When the pandemic began, all humans "disappeared" from the earth, and thanks to that absence, the earth began to regenerate from the many damages that we have done. It was cleaned, we could say. DELICATE is to return to that wild and natural part of the earth, which we need so much. It is a respite for humanity. • EOHCB: Polygraph Testing in the Workplace

Polygraph testing is a test used to verify a person’s truthfulness and is often called a ‘Lie Detector Test'. The application of polygraph testing is a relatively new concept in South Africa, especially in disputes relating to employment relationships. There is no specific labour legislation at this point to control the use of the test or to protect the employee’s rights against the abuse of the test. Can one be compelled to undergo a polygraph test? An employee may not be compelled to undergo a polygraph examination, unless she or he agrees to it or a collective agreement or contract of employment provides for it. The agreement must be in writing. The individual should be informed that— • the examinations are voluntary; • only questions discussed prior to the examination will be used; • he/she has a right to have an interpreter, if necessary; • should he/she prefer, another person may be present during the examination, provided that person does not interfere in any way with the proceedings; • no abuse in whatever way will be allowed; • no discrimination will be allowed; and • no threats will be allowed. When is the employer permitted to use polygraph testing? Generally, employers are permitted to use the polygraph to investigate specific incidents where - • Employees had access to property which is the subject of the investigation. • There is a reasonable suspicion that the employee was involved in the incident. • There has been economic loss or injury to the employer’s business-like theft of company property. • The employer is combating dishonesty in positions of trust. • The employer is combating serious alcohol, illegal drugs or narcotics abuse and fraudulent behaviour within the company. • The employer is combating deliberate falsification of documents and lies regarding true identity of the people involved. Polygraph results can only be released to an authorised person. Generally, it is the person who has undergone the polygraph test (examinee), or anyone specifically designated in writing by the examinee; and the person representing the employer or government agency that requested the examination. What is the status of polygraph tests at arbitration? Polygraphists have been accepted as expert witnesses whose evidence needs to be tested for reliability. The duty of the commissioner is to determine the admissibility and reliability of the evidence. Polygraph tests indicate whether the subject has answered the questions truthfully but are not regarded as being 100% accurate. They may not be interpreted as implying guilt but may be used to support other available evidence that suggests that the employee concerned did indeed commit the alleged misconduct. In other words, polygraph test results, on their own, are not a basis for proving that someone committed an act or omission as alleged by the employer but may be used as a factor in determining the probabilities. Because polygraph tests are regarded as not being entirely reliable, dismissals based solely on the result of a polygraph test have generally been found to be unfair. Employers should ensure that disciplinary codes and company policies and procedures provide for polygraph testing and also obtain the written consent from the examinee before commencing with such testing. • Styles: The Batik Hair Colour Technique

Comments from Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International Rainbow Room International are renowned colour experts and are known for their incredible colour work that has won them a number of awards and accolades, their predictions on the hottest upcoming colour trends and also their ability to create new colour techniques that are admired within the industry, such as their recent Colour Spill technique that uses geometric sectioning, relaxed colour application and precise colour choices. For 2022, Rainbow Room International have unveiled their latest colour technique, of which they have used to create the hair looks within their latest colour collection – the Batik tie dye colour technique. Although an unusual and unique hair colour technique, the Batik tie dye hair colour technique is a great way for hairdressers to be inventive and artistic and for clients to opt for a more fun and bold hair colour choice. It will be a particularly popular colour choice for clients for festival season and for spring/summer when clients are looking to add more creative colour to their hair looks. This technique is similar to the freehand hair colour technique, where stylists will look at the clients hair and see where the colour should be placed, rather than using traditional foiling methods, however, instead of using a regular paddle, stylists can just like an artist, apply the colour on via sponge to give sections of the hair a striking and pigmented hair colour application. Although freehand hair colour techniques can often be more low maintenance, this one is certainly not. Clients will need to keep the colour maintained at home with colour protecting products and hair treatments to keep the colour sealed in and looking its best and they will need to be aware that should they wish to get rid of the colour, they may require a couple of trips to the salon to take their hair back to a more natural hue. “I love to use this colour technique to give the hair a gradient of colour. Colouring the base of the hair a lighter shade and then using the tie dye technique to add a pattern in the middle of the hair that instead of blends into the lighter hair colour, bleeds into it. It blends beautifully but instead of being seamless, is more striking. For clients who want a more subtle look, this can be done by creating more of a blend in the hair. As the colour starts to wear off the sponge, take this back through the areas you have covered to blend the colour out into the base hair shade. I love to add a vibrant colour to a light blonde to create even more of a show-stopping tie dye look. More vivid hues like yellow are a great choice. These are shades that clients may not want to wear all over their hair but may be more inclined to try in these targeted areas to create a super quirky finish that looks particularly stunning paired with a short crop.” Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International.
