- Style Inspiration: Working Woman by Jamie Wiley, USA
“Working Woman”: a tribute to women in the business world Inspired by women in the business world and with a nostalgic touch of the nineties, this hairdressing collection pays homage to the triumph over barriers that had previously denied their entry. The protagonists in this collection boldly challenge established norms, defined only by their own guidelines. In "Working Woman", we explore the exceptional ability of these women to masterfully balance and merge their multifaceted roles. They are wives, mothers, friends and, above all, successful professionals who have made their way in a traditionally male-dominated world. The collection captures the essence of the confidence and determination that these women exude in their business environment. The hairstyles reflect their strength and elegance, using crisp, structured lines that convey a sense of power. The cuts and styles highlight each woman's individuality. They emphasise their professionalism and sophistication. Colours draw inspiration from the nineties palette, with bold and vibrant tones that symbolise the energy and passion of these women in their quest for success. From blonde tones to dramatic contrasts in dark shades, each style reflects their unique personalities and their courage in facing challenges and overcoming barriers. "Working Woman" stands as a collection that celebrates the strength and determination of entrepreneurial women, paying homage to their ability to set their own course and succeed in all aspects of their lives. With this collection, we want to inspire all women to continue to pursue their dreams and harness their inner power to achieve whatever they set their minds to. - Local Inspiration by Anrich Botha from Agora Hair
Teasey lights for days on this first time blonde, done by Anrich Botha from Agora Hair in Pretoria. Click the image below to see the Instagram post. We have done one very subtle balayage previously but nothing nearly as dramatic as this! Still keeping it low maintenance we did leave a lot of natural root for a softer grow out. This is all thanks to the back combing method using my amazing @cooboard. It may look scary but if done right the back-combed hair brushes out like a dream at the basin. 🙌🏻 For this rosey-golden colour I used Fanola 9.0 + 9.1 + 8.3 + 0.1% Vio intensifier. Each client receives their own personal custom formulaton that can't just be squeezed out of a tube. - Business Blog 10 July 2023: Listen to Your Salon
How good is your sense of listening, not hearing but actually listening? For example, many people base their diet and lifestyle by listening to their bodies. Most people listen to their conscious (value system) when making a decision regarding right and wrong. In fact, we 'listen' all the time to our cars telling us we're great drivers and how cool we look in our designer sunglasses. And, of course, clients listen for compliments and admiration for the cuts and styles you create for them every time they have their hair done that reassures them that they are dressed for success? What we are really hearing is a vibration of energy that tells us these things. So when was the last time you listened to what your salon can tell you? Here's an exercise you might want to try. At the end of the day when you've turned off the lights and about to leave the salon, STOP. Turn the lights back on, make yourself a last cup of coffee, slowly look around your salon and visualise your salon as seen through the eyes of both clients and staff - and listen! Are you satisfied with the quality of the coffee you offer to your clients (the one you're drinking right now), Are you happy with the salon décor, considering your staff have to come to work every day and work in a creative environment? Does your salon décor provide the safe, relaxing, or elegant atmosphere your clients desire? Are the magazines current or do clients have to page through the same old magazines every time they come to the salon? Does your retail display invite clients to buy? Does the toilet seat need fixing? (I get this one all the time) If you are listening, then make a list of all the things your salon tells you that needs attending to - all the things you can't see when your salon is filled with other people's energy. This exercise allows you to tune in to the energy in your salon and gives your salon a voice! All you have to do is listen. - Terry Miles, MD of MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za

- EOHCB: 5 Ways to Improve Employee Wellbeing
The Occupational Health and Safety Act, of 1993, requires the employer to bring about and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a work environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the workers. Risks associated with the health of workers also include employee wellbeing - which is that of the physical, mental, and emotional state of individuals at work. Wellbeing in the workplace has a profound impact, not only on the job but on employees’ whole lives. It is common that the effects of workplace stress spill over at home, in relationships, and in a person’s self-perception and esteem. The same applies when stress spills over at work. Caring for the wellbeing of employees can lead to an enhanced sense of self and enjoyment of life which will impact the working environment and professional relationships positively. The benefits of employee wellbeing – Employee wellbeing is linked with higher satisfaction at work, improved teamwork, and healthy social connections among the entire workforce. When employees are happy, their productivity increases. For an employer, this translates to a more stable workplace environment, reduces costs related to absenteeism and turnover, and better business continuity. There are many elements of running a business within South Africa today which has become challenging. These elements also impact the contractual obligations entered into by the employer and employees and implementing these 5 ways to improve employee wellbeing and enhance satisfaction and productivity in the workplace, can assist to mitigate the challenges faced by both the business owner and the individual rendering services. 1. Identify possible stress drivers Determine how the workplace is stressing out employees. There are many causes of work stress, and some are easier to solve than others. Some commons drivers of stress in the workplace include but are not limited to: Boredom or unchallenging work Long hours Feeling a lack of autonomy or control Workplace harassment or discrimination Poor equipment or work environment Lack of opportunities for advancement or promotion Job security 2. Implement employee mental health programmes Employers can be proactive about improving employee wellbeing by offering programmes specifically focused on mental health. This will assist in improved job satisfaction. This could be a mentorship programme, where employees pair up in a buddy system to support each other, or where employees are provided dedicated time off to focus on their mental wellbeing, without the risk of losing any benefits. Stress management workshops can be provided during working hours, such as learning healthy communication skills, nutrition and fitness courses, or relaxation techniques, such as journaling or meditation. A mobile application can be used to track and facilitate calm breathing, lowering heart rate, and reduce the symptoms of stress during their workday. 3. Encourage mindfulness in the workplace Mindfulness is a form of meditation that helps people become aware of their thoughts and feelings as they occur, and learn to calm the mind and have the physiological symptoms of stress. Mindfulness has become popular as a tool for wellness, and many workplaces encourage mindfulness to help boost employee wellbeing. A study found that mindfulness meditation in the workplace improved productivity by 120% and absenteeism dropped by 85%! Even just 10 days of meditation has been shown to reduce aggression by 57% and increase compassion by 23%. Encouraging mindfulness in the workplace is one of the most effective ways that employers can help improve the wellbeing of staff. Employers can refer workers to free meditation mobile application subscriptions, meditation workshops, and sessions in the workplace, or subsidise employees to attend mindfulness courses outside of the workplace. 4. Offer fun activities to recharge employees Offering fun activities for employees, whether it is a “chill-zone” in the workplace, a non-work related outing, or creative social gatherings is a great way to let employees unwind, recharge, and connect to one another outside of their daily and contractual responsibilities. Having fun at work is really important to help create a healthy, balanced environment. Employees don’t want to feel that they are simply paid to render services; they want to be part of a workplace community and feel that their contribution is appreciated and rewarded. Laughter and light-hearted activity releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone, and helps to build creativity. It is a fact, people who enjoy what they do will naturally do it better! 5. Recognise employees for their hard work There two things that all humans have in common – the need to belong and feel appreciated. This is also true and relevant in the workplace. While most employers assume that workers leave for a better-paying job, only a small fraction of workers get an increase at the new workplace. What’s more, a large portion of employees say that they would work harder if they were more appreciated. Recognising employees for their hard work is the most essential thing an employer can do to improve wellbeing. Things like bonuses, gifts for employees, and “Employee of the Month” – type of awards are all important, however, there is more to it than that. Appreciation should be built-in into the workplace culture, meaning that employees must be recognised every day, even for the small things. Seemingly fleeting gestures, such as a “You are a Super Star!” message or an impromptu meeting to thank the team, or even just looking an employee in the eye and asking how they are doing and whether there is something they need right now – all these are quick yet powerful ways to show recognition and make staff members feel seen and cared for. Placing employee wellbeing at the top of the list of priorities is not just good for employees, it is good for business too! - Business Blog 5 July 2023: Avoiding Conflict in the Salon
Very few things can destroy a business quicker that internal conflict in the salon. This can be between staff and management or between workers themselves. The person that suffers the most when there is conflict in the salon, is the client. The fact is EVERYBODY has the right to feel safe, to be happy, and to be successful and NOBODY has the right to take that away from them. The problem, I think, is in the word RIGHT. Individually one has the right to have an opinion about something whether it is religion, or sexual preferences or any other principles they choose. They just don't belong in the workplace where, if you think about it, the only person who has those rights is the client. After all we are there to satisfy THEIR problems, needs and desires, not the other way round. What is the First, Easy Step? The first step is to have an imaginary 'hook' outside the door onto which staff must 'hang' their personal issues. Once you enter the salon you should be totally committed to the idea 'what more can I do to make the business more successful?' The Next Step involves Love & Respect Everything thereafter must be guided by respect, love and passion. Respect for yourself, for your colleagues, and the right of the salon to be successful. Love what you do and do it well. When a client asks for a cup of coffee, she should get a cup of love. Passion is an energy in which anything can be achieved. Keep Everyone’s “eyes on the prize”: Focus on Opportunities & Performance Goals Other ways of keeping morale high and everyone’s 'eyes on the prize' is by creating opportunities to give staff feedback about both the successes of the salon, and, yes, things that need to be improved. Regular staff meetings are great as long as they end on a HIGH. Staff 'one-on-one' performance reviews allow you to focus on individual performances and should always end up with setting new performance goals. Even disciplinary action can be useful if you are able to be constructive and get the staff member to see the drop in their performance and get them to commit to improving performance. Open Communication Lastly there are two company policies that are really useful. One is an open door policy where management is approachable should staff have issues they wish to discuss. The other is a speak-up policy whereby if anyone believes a colleague or even management are doing things that are immoral or illegal or could in anyway put the business at risk, they are obliged to speak-up. Fill your salon with respect and passion and open communication, with focus on the kind of positive vibe you want to create the safe, successful, confident environment your clients will seek out as their haven away from the rest of the world. - Terry Miles, MD of MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za
