  • Business Blog 24 July: Costs, Breaking Even, Targeting & Making a Profit

At the end of the day, aren’t we all in the business to make a profit? But that isn't going to happen indefinitely until we learn two very basic, but very important business skills. Budgeting and Targeting. Budgeting is the only way to have some sort of control over costs in relation to turnover. You MUST understand exactly how much it costs you to run your business. Costs & the Break-Even Point In your business you have fixed costs and variable costs. Examples of fixed costs are rental, salon insurance, management costs and fixed salaries, which are pretty much the same every month. Examples of variable costs are commission, cost of sales (stock), utilities such as electricity and water which fluctuate depending on how much business you do. Other variables which can be fixed are things like cleaning materials, refreshments etc - even toilet paper, the costs of which must be budgeted for. On your budgeting you should also make an allowance for maintenance and repairs (just in case) as well as marketing. Once you have calculated these costs you have a set of budgets, but most importantly, you know your salon's break-even point, i.e. how much it costs you to run your business. Target Setting & Profit This is where Targeting or target setting comes in. You know how much it costs you to run your business, You know how many days you will be trading in the forthcoming month, You know how many productive staff (service providers) you have working for you, And you know how many clients you have on your client data base. By dividing your break-even turnover target by the number of trading days, you know how much turnover you need to do EVERY day to cover your costs. So now you should target the amount of profit you want to make. This is where it gets really interesting! The Importance of Staff Soft Skills By integrating all the soft skills your team has such as: Pre-booking clients before they leave the salon ensures at least 1-2 additions visits to the salon annually. Up-selling via consultation, education, and making professional recommendations to your clients EDUCATE your clients on the importance of maintaining their hair between visits to the salon by using professionally recommended (prescribed) home care products. Motivate your clients to act as your ambassadors by referring friends and colleague and reward the via your Loyalty Programme. When it comes to making turnover, Targeting is important. When it comes to making profit, Budgeting is crucial. – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za

  • MySalon Software: The All-in-One Software System for your Salon

There have been a number of exciting things happening at MySalon Software the past few months! MyBusiness We have had many requests to have all the great features in Salon Software be made available in a generic business system. Earlier this year we launched MyBusiness. Suitable for any kind of business that is looking for a Cloud-Based POS, CRM system that requires financial report. MyTime More and more clients are asking for the convenience of booking appointments on-line. So we launched MyTime, an on-line bookings platform clients can access from their phone or PC in which they can REQUEST an appointment from time-slots available on your appointment book. Clients are advised that theirs is an appointment request and is only confirmed once they receive confirmation from YOU. Loyalty Programme Recognising and rewarding clients is proving to be an essential tool for building a loyal client data base. Our loyalty programme allows clients to earn and spend points as well as earn bonus points for referring new clients. They can even gift their loyalty points to friends and colleagues. Business Blogs Sharing knowledge and know-how has always been the number one goal in the development of our software. We continue to share tips and ideas from our 'business toolbox' via the #1 industry newsletter HAIRNEWS (www.hairnews.co.za), as well as via our web-site (www.mysalonsoftware.co.za) This month's Star Feature PROFIT - Protecting your profit line. Profit or loss is on the line every day you open your doors and is nothing more than spending less and increasing turnover. In simple terms, if you spend 99c for every R1 you make you will never run at a loss. To make sure your costs are in line with your turnover, if not, increase turnover or cut back on spending. If you check your Statement of Income (income statement) on your system on daily basis and make decisions accordingly, it will be difficult NOT to make a profit. • EOHCB: Staff Wellbeing - Why it Matters and How to Foster it in the Workplace

In today's fast-paced and demanding work environment, staff wellbeing has become an increasingly important topic. It refers to the overall physical, mental, and emotional health and happiness of employees, and it has a significant impact on the productivity and success of a company. By prioritising the wellbeing of their staff, organisations can create a positive and supportive work environment that leads to increased job satisfaction, reduced stress and absenteeism, and higher levels of engagement and motivation. Why is staff wellbeing important? A healthy and happy workforce is crucial for any company. The physical and mental health of employees can have a direct impact on their performance, as well as their ability to handle stress and stay focused. In addition, when employees feel supported and valued, they are more likely to stay with their current employer, leading to reduced turnover and increased job stability. Moreover, when staff feel stressed and overwhelmed, it can lead to physical and mental health problems, such as burnout, depression, and anxiety. These issues not only affect the individual, but they can also have a ripple effect on their colleagues and the overall work environment. By promoting staff wellbeing, companies can create a work culture that values the health and happiness of its employees and supports them in their personal and professional lives. How to foster staff wellbeing in the workplace There are several ways organisations can promote and support the wellbeing of their staff. Here are a few strategies that can be effective: Encourage physical activity and healthy habits - Physical activity is an essential aspect of overall health and wellbeing. Encouraging employees to get up from their desks and move around throughout the day can help to reduce stress, improve focus, and boost energy levels. Offering exercise classes, on-site gym facilities, or promoting healthy habits such as taking breaks for stretching and hydration can all contribute to a healthier work environment. Offer flexible working arrangements - Allowing employees to have control over their working hours, such as the option to adjust their work schedules, can reduce stress, and improve work-life balance. By providing flexible working arrangements, companies can help to reduce burnout and absenteeism and increase employee engagement and motivation. Provide mental health support - Mental health is just as important as physical health, and employers should provide resources and support for employees who are struggling with mental health issues. This could include offering confidential counselling services, providing training for managers on how to support employees with mental health concerns, or promoting stress-management techniques. Foster a positive work culture - Creating a positive work culture can have a big impact on the wellbeing of employees. This can include promoting open communication, recognising, and valuing the contributions of employees, and creating a supportive and inclusive work environment. Encouraging team-building activities, such as regular staff social events or volunteer opportunities, can also help to build strong relationships and improve overall morale. In conclusion, promoting staff wellbeing is a key aspect of creating a successful and productive work environment. By investing in the physical, mental, and emotional health of employees, companies can reduce stress, increase job satisfaction, and support their staff in achieving their personal and professional goals. Whether it is through flexible working arrangements, mental health support, or fostering a positive work culture, there are many strategies that organisations can implement to help improve the wellbeing of their staff. • Business Blog 19 July 2023: Business Is Great - If You Know the Formula

Business Goes Where It's Invited. It Stays Where It's Wanted. And It Grows Where It's Pampered. For salon owners who know this formula, business will always be great. This is not just because they are working IN their business, but because they are working ON it. And it’s not just about the turnover. For many reasons turnover fluctuates throughout the year, but a great business grows client by client. What Are You Doing to Invite Clients into Your Salon? There are so many ways that I sometimes fail to understand why salons complain of not having enough clients. Pre-booking the next appointment. Not only will this guarantee a busier appointment book but could also result in an increase in clients spending of 15% a year. Offer a second blow wave to all first-time cut & blow or chemical clients Up-sell clients to new services - it has been proven that it is easier to sell another product or service to an existing client that it is to get another client into the salon. Get existing clients to refer friends and colleagues - this is the most effective way of getting new clients into the salon and satisfied clients are the best way to do this. Also be promotionally active - SMS, email, salon signage, print media, sponsorships, sell-through promotions. How Do You Show Clients How Much You Value Their Business? Body language - If your hair, make-up, dress sense and attitude are not speaking the same language you are not 'dressed for success'. Time management - being punctual, keeping to appointment times and not keeping clients waiting speaks volumes about respecting the clients' time. Provide a Professional Consultation every time you see your client and be honest with them about their hair and make professional recommendation with integrity, not just for the money. Thank them. Reward them. Pamper Your Clients This really is what separates the top salons from the rest. In the service industry perception is reality and if clients don't feel they are being pampered to the point of believing that it is all about them, this lack of pampering will stifle the growth of your business. The key is to pamper with a purpose and the purpose should be to give every client the best hair they can have. This can be best achieved if you always have something new to offer your clients which is why top stylists attend seminars and continuously look for inspiration for their work. However, stylists can do nothing new for their clients until they get their client's permission. In this sense, pampering is how you make your recommendations in a way that the client can ‘SEE’ the benefits. Communication is a key element of pampering. A stunning recreation of the Essential Looks done by Zane du Plessis from Zane Hair Studio. Click the image below to see the Instagram post. For this stunning transformation, I started with a pre-lightened base and refreshed the copper tones using the following formula: 🎨 Igora 6-4 + 6-77 + 6-88 🎨 (Perfect for adding pigment while maintaining brightness, especially with 10% grey hair) To add dimension and create seamless blending, I used a neat trick: I sprayed water where the color ends. It worked wonders! 💦 After rinsing, I used the BC Color Freeze range for a glossy finish, applying Vibrance 7-77 + 7-57.
