There is no limit on your earnings. Wage commissions have a minimum monthly guarantee.   Q. HOW DO I GET PAID? A. Each staff member receives a Visa debit card by Ocean Pay where you can access money via ATMs and transfer funds online. Salaries are automatically credited to accounts. The debit card can be used to withdraw money from an ATM machine or pay at any venue that accepts credit or debit cards. Pay cycles vary from cruise line to cruise line, but typically occur bi-weekly or monthly. Another benefit of the Ocean Pay savings account is that money can be wired into a savings account.   Q. WHAT ONBOARD EXPENSES WILL I INCUR? A. Your accommodation and meals are provided for free, and your work uniform is usually laundered for free. If you want to make phone calls, use wi-fi at sea, make gift shop purchases, buy drinks from the bar, and do personal laundry then you will pay for these extras. Q: WHERE WILL I SLEEP ON BOARD THE SHIP? A: You will be allocated a small cabin which you will share with one other person. It is equipped with a bunk bed, telephone, small wardrobe closet, dresser, private shower and bathroom facilities.   Q: WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE? A: Cruise ships offer a wide variety of mouthwatering food and beverage options. The crew dining room is open at all times for staff and all food here is free. If the ship has specialty restaurants, crew are allowed to book in for a paid meal if you want to spoil yourself.   Q: WHAT ABOUT CALLING HOME AND WI-FI? A: Calling family and friends has become easier over time, and on many ships you can call home from the comfort of your cabin. Costs are very reasonable. • EOHCB: Navigating Business Management & Compliance in the Hairdressing, Cosmetology, and Beauty Industry

Our hairdressing, cosmetology, and beauty industry is vibrant and diverse, offering a plethora of opportunities for entrepreneurs. However, amidst the creative flair and client satisfaction, it's crucial for businesses to navigate the intricacies of business management and compliance to thrive sustainably. Let’s delve into the fundamentals of business management and compliance within the industry’s context, exploring practical insights and a comprehensive checklist for business owners. Understanding Business Management: Effective business management is the cornerstone of success in any industry. In the hairdressing, cosmetology, and beauty sector, it encompasses various aspects, including: Financial Management: Proper financial management involves budgeting, accounting, and cash flow management. This includes tracking expenses, managing revenue streams, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. For example, a hair salon owner should keep meticulous records of income and expenses, including staff salaries and statutory contributions to the National Bargaining Council for Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty, and Skincare Industry (HCSBC), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COIDA), Skills Development Levies (SDL), product purchases, and rental costs. Human Resource Management: Managing personnel efficiently is essential for maintaining a productive and harmonious workplace. This involves hiring qualified staff, providing training and development opportunities, and addressing any misconduct and or incapacity issues promptly. In the industry, HR management may include scheduling shifts, managing employee leave, and ensuring compliance with labour laws prescribed by the Main Collective Agreement (MCA) of the HCSBC, Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Labour Relations Act (LRA), Skills Development Act (SDA), National Minimum Wage Act (NWA), and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), etc. Inventory Management: Proper inventory management is crucial for businesses that sell professional haircare and beauty products or use them in their services. This includes monitoring stock level manner and replenishments in a timely manner and minimising waste. For instance, a cosmetology clinic should keep track of skincare products' expiration dates and rotate stock accordingly. Marketing and Customer Relations: Building a strong brand and fostering customer loyalty is vital for sustained growth. Effective marketing strategies, such as social media campaigns and loyalty programs, can help attract and retain clients. Additionally, maintaining excellent customer relations through personalised services and prompt feedback management is essential in the beauty industry. Navigating Compliance: Compliance with regulatory requirements is non-negotiable for businesses operating in our hairdressing, cosmetology, and beauty sector. Key areas of compliance include: Health and Safety Regulations: Businesses must comply with health and safety standards to ensure the well-being of both employees and clients. This includes maintaining a clean and hygienic environment, sterilizing equipment regularly, and adhering to COVID-19 protocols, and doing regular risk assessments for Hazardous Biological Agents (HBA). Licensing and Permits: Depending on the nature of the business, certain licenses and permits may be required to operate legally. For example, a hair salon may need a health license, while a beauty spa may require a liquor license if it offers alcoholic beverages to clients. Employment Laws: Registration with the HCSBC for employers and employees is mandatory. Membership to the Sick Pay Fund and Pension Fund of the HCSBC is also compulsory, with the only alternative being an application and approval through exemption. Compliance with labour laws is essential to protect employees' rights and avoid legal liabilities. This includes adhering to minimum wage requirements, providing safe working conditions, and respecting employees' entitlements such as leave, and overtime pay. Consumer Protection: Businesses must uphold consumer rights by providing accurate information about products and services, honouring warranties and guarantees, and handling complaints effectively. Compliance with data protection laws, such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), is also crucial for safeguarding client data and annual risk assessments must be done, data mapping, and refresher training conducted for existing and new employees. Practical Examples and Checklist: To illustrate how business management and compliance principles apply in practice, let's consider a hypothetical scenario: Scenario: Sarah owns a hair salon in Johannesburg, specialising in organic hair treatments and styling services. Examples of Management and Compliance: Financial Management: Sarah keeps detailed financial records using accounting software. She files tax returns annually and pays taxes on time to the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Human Resource Management: Sarah hires qualified hairstylists and provides ongoing training on organic hair care techniques. She ensures compliance with labour laws by paying staff salaries in accordance with minimum wage regulations of the industry and providing leave as per statutory requirements contained in the Main Collective Agreement. She deducts from her employees and contributes on their behalf to the statutory contributions and benefits of the HCSBC and makes the necessary payment by the 7th of each month as gazetted in the MCA. She also does the same for UIF and SDL monthly, and annually to Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Fund (COID). Inventory Management: Sarah maintains an inventory of organic hair care products and monitors stock levels to prevent shortages. She conducts regular audits to identify slow-moving items and adjusts her purchasing strategy accordingly. Marketing and Customer Relations: Sarah promotes her salon through social media platforms, showcasing before-and-after photos of clients' hair transformations. She offers loyalty rewards, such as discounted services for repeat clients, to incentivise customer retention. Checklist for Business Owners: Health and Safety: Are salon premises clean and hygienic? Is equipment sterilized after each use? Is regular risk assessment conducted and measures put in place to mitigate any risks of exposure to HBA, and or any other diseases which could compromise the health and safety of staff and clients? Licensing and Permits: Are all required licenses and permits up to date? Have any changes in regulations or licensing requirements been reviewed and addressed? Employment Laws: Is the employer and employee(s) registered with the HCSBC, contributing to the Sick Pay Fund, Pension Fund, UIF, SDL, and COID? Are staff contracts compliant with the MCA? Are minimum wage and overtime regulations being followed? Are staff entitlements, such as leave and benefits, being provided as per legal requirements prescribed in the MCA? Consumer Protection: Are clients provided with accurate information about products and services? Is client data handled in compliance with data protection laws? Are complaints addressed promptly and satisfactorily? In our hairdressing, cosmetology, and beauty industry, effective business management and compliance are essential for sustainable growth and success. By understanding and adhering to regulatory requirements, implementing sound management practices, and regularly auditing their operations, business owners can navigate challenges effectively and build thriving enterprises. Taking care of it is a good habit, however, careful attention must be paid to the real needs of the skin to choose the right treatments and products.   The steps are simple and vary according to skin type and the desired result and the time available to complete the skin care routine. If you have long hair, move it away from your face to keep your hair clean.   STEP 1: Cleansing – No. 801 Wet your face with warm water, emulsify a little NO. 801 between the hands and lather over the face and neck with circular movements, avoiding the eye area. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Avoid harsh soaps and cleanse every day.   STEP 2: Exfoliation – No. 802 Apply a little NO. 802 over moist skin of the face and neck, and massage with delicate circular movements, insisting on the T-zone and avoiding the eye area. Rinse thoroughly. Apply 1 to 2 times a week, preferably in the evening and the day before shaving.   STEP 3: Mask -  NO. 806.807.808 Remove the mask from the sachet and apply it to the face after cleansing with STEP 1 and / or STEP 2 . Relax and leave on the face for 10-15 minutes, then remove. Massage with linear movements until any excess lotion left on the skin is absorbed. To be used daily, weekly, monthly or as needed.   STEP 4: Hydration -  NO. 803.809.805 Apply to previously cleansed face and neck and massage with the fingers in circular movements to distribute until absorbed. Gently massage the face with linear outward movements to help smoothen features. Massage with deeper movements to firm the skin.   Apply NO. 803 DAILY FACE CREAM every day, one or more times per day. Apply NO. 809 NIGHTLY FACE CREAM  at night as your last skin routine step before going to sleep.   If your skin needs a wake up boost, apply NO. 805 NO HANGOVER GEL as an alternative to the daily face cream, or in the evening before bed to work on your skin and refresh it during the night. If you have sensitive, acne-prone or oily skin, apply light pressure.   STEP 5: Eye Contour – No.804 Gently apply over the eye area / around to the eyes in the morning and / or in the evening. Gently tap with the ring finger until completely absorbed following an outward line towards the temples.   STEP 6: Skin Lotion – No, 815 Distribute over the skin of the body massaging with the palm of the hand and circular clockwise movements until completely absorbed. Massage with deeper movements to firm the skin. Use daily, weekly, monthly or as needed.   DISCOVER THE MOST SUITABLE PRODUCTS FOR YOUR  LIFESTYLE   FACE FITNESS: FACIAL BEAUTY ROUTINES   The DEPOT® SKIN CARE  routine, consisting of simple gestures combined with products specific for male facial skin care, performed daily or simply several times a week, gives immediate and long-lasting benefits. • Mental Health - Self-Care Strategies for Stylists

Learning which self-care strategies work best for you can require some trial and error, but once you figure it out, you’ll be better able to recharge, reduce stress, and prevent burnout. This helps you to perform your best personally and professionally.   STRATEGIES TO PRACTICE Prioritize self-care   and seek support when needed. Remember, it’s okay to put yourself first – your clients will appreciate you for it in the long run. Make time to unwind  and recharge, whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or taking a moment to yourself. Grounding yourself  before work (or in those moments when you’re feeling overwhelmed) can help you stay focused and manage emotions more effectively. Take breaks . It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the salon but skipping meals or denying yourself the opportunity to sit down and rest for a few minutes doesn’t help you or your clients. Don’t bring work home with you . Setting boundaries between work and your personal life maintains a healthy balance and prevents burnout. Make time to  write down   your thoughts and feelings to help you gain clarity and perspective on your mental health. Find support  – whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues, having a support network to turn to in times of need can make all the difference in your mental health.   If you’re trying self-care strategies and find yourself still feeling stressed or overwhelmed, you may be experiencing symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue, or other mental health challenges.   ASKING FOR HELP In the stylist community, reaching out for help might seem intimidating. As a stylist, you’re often seen as the one who listens, solves problems, and stays strong for your clients. But beneath the surface, many stylists deal with their own mental health challenges. Admitting struggles can be tough, however reaching out is a crucial step in prioritizing your well-being. Reach out to a colleague . Who knows what a stylist goes through better than another stylist? Reach out to a colleague you trust when you’re having trouble with work. They may have insights and advice for how to handle situations or suggestions for coping strategies. Seek mentorship  from a more experienced stylist. They can provide guidance, support, and perspective on managing burnout in the salon. Look for opportunities  to connect with stylists (your peers) who work at other salons to create a safe space for gathering and sharing, either online or in person. Advocate for your own needs  and well-being in the workplace. Be assertive in communicating your boundaries, limitations, and the support you require. Consider seeking support  from a licensed mental health professional if your struggles continue or worsen. Treatment options like therapy can provide a safe space to explore your feelings, develop coping strategies, and work towards improving your mental well-being.   Burnout, compassion fatigue, and daily stress are real and significant challenges for stylists, but you don’t have to face them alone. By recognizing the signs and symptoms of these issues and reaching out for support when needed, you can prioritize your mental health and well-being.    The above article was first published by sexyhair.  Click the link to see the original article  Self-Care Strategies – SexyHair

  • EOHCB: Workplace Safety Awareness & Implementation

What is Safety Awareness? Safety awareness is the proactive habit of considering the potential for harm or property damage before undertaking any task. Simply having safety policies and procedures in place isn't sufficient; it's crucial to ensure that everyone is not only aware of them but also actively incorporates safety into their daily activities. Why is Safety Awareness Important? Building safety awareness serves as the foundation of any effective safety program. It signals to employees that management prioritises their well-being. When safe work practices are emphasized, the result is a decrease in injuries and an increase in overall productivity. Moreover, integrating safety awareness into the implementation of policies ensures their effectiveness and fosters a culture of safety consciousness. How to Build Safety Awareness Building safety awareness involves two key components: convincing employees of the importance of safety and providing consistent reminders about safety practices. Simply inundating the workplace with safety posters won't suffice unless employees truly understand why safety matters to them personally. Messages about safety must resonate with individuals on a personal level to be effective. Ideas to Build Safety Awareness 1. Entry Ways First impressions matter, especially in the workplace. The moment employees and visitors step into your facility, they should be greeted with visual cues that safety is a top priority. Whether it's a safety mission statement, current goals, or safety-related messages, ensure that safety receives the same prominence as other business priorities. 2. Posters/Banners Safety posters are a fundamental tool for promoting safety awareness. To maximize their impact, ensure that posters are relevant to your operations and change them frequently. Moving posters to different locations can also help maintain employees' attention and keep safety top of minds. 3. Clear Markings and Signage Visible and well-maintained markings and signage are essential for guiding employees safely through the workplace. Regular inspection and replacement of worn-out signage demonstrate a commitment to safety and ensure that safety messages remain effective. 4. Talking Safety Daily discussions about safety among team members are essential for reinforcing safety practices. These discussions should be led by direct supervisors and managers, as employees are more likely to follow their lead. Integrate safety reminders into everyday conversations to keep safety at the forefront of employees' minds. 5. Surveys Regularly soliciting feedback from employees about the safety program, policies, and procedures is invaluable for identifying areas for improvement. Utilise various survey methods, such as paper questionnaires or online surveys, to gather feedback consistently and anonymously. 6. Employee Involvement Including employees in the development, implementation, and review of safety programs fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to safety. Empower employees to actively contribute ideas and feedback, making them active participants in building a culture of safety. 7. Proactive Safety Goals Shift the focus from reactive safety goals based on incident numbers to proactive goals centered around safety behaviors. Setting specific safety goals, such as improving housekeeping or equipment maintenance, encourages employees to prioritise safety in their daily activities. 8. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) While PPE is often viewed as a last resort, its consistent use is indicative of a strong safety culture. The act of donning safety gear before engaging in tasks heightens awareness of potential hazards and reinforces the importance of safety precautions. 9. Take Action Building safety awareness requires a systematic approach and ongoing effort. Start by assessing one area of your workplace at a time and identify opportunities to enhance safety awareness. Whether it's updating posters, conducting supervisor training, or setting new safety goals, taking proactive steps is key to fostering a culture of safety in the workplace. How to Create an Effective Inspection Checklist: Creating an effective inspection checklist involves a smart and systematic approach. Start by identifying potential issues to prevent, categorise them by importance and likelihood, outline specific project, equipment, or facility needs, and list pointers to avoid errors. It's akin to building a versatile tool adaptable to various situations. The typical structure of a checklist provides a backbone holding everything together. It includes a header with essential information like the inspector’s name and date, space for special notes or instructions, and specific points to check and mark off, ensuring organisation, clarity, and efficiency. Checklists are beneficial for a range of professionals, including safety inspectors, facility managers, quality control personnel, and equipment operators, serving as a reliable tool for compliance, safety, or efficiency tasks. Customizing pre-made checklists to suit individual needs is encouraged. Pre-made lists serve as starting canvases, allowing for the addition or removal of items and adjustments to fit unique requirements, ensuring they align with specific workflows. Checklists play a crucial role in enhancing workplace safety by helping identify potential hazards, ensuring compliance with regulations, and promoting adherence to safety protocols, ultimately maintaining a hazard-free environment, and preventing accidents. In the final analysis, safety awareness is not just a set of guidelines - it's a mindset that should permeate every aspect of the workplace. By implementing these strategies, organisations can cultivate a culture where safety is not just a priority but a shared responsibility among all employees.
