It’s Halloween season – the perfect time for reds! According to Lloyd Court from seanhanna salons in Wimbledon, reds and Halloween will always be intertwined. “Red is associated with Halloween because it symbolises danger and fear,” he explains. “Orange, particularly, is perfect at this time of year as it’s the colour of pumpkins – even though the traditional Jack-O-Lanterns in the 17th century were turnips.

“This is a wonderful time to introduce coppers and reds to clients; soft tones that can be dialled up or dialled down depending on what your client wants.

Lloyd offers his top tips for getting the perfect Halloween red

1 When working on an all-over red look, mix a few shades together to soften or strengthen each tone to make it a natural-looking copper tone.

2 Reds and coppers look really elevated when utilised in panels, so don’t just think about putting on an all over colour. Use two-three shades in different sections to achieve a really beautiful multi-tonal result.

3 When using copper shades, it’s important to utilise booster shades – you can dial up or dial down your shades however you want. For the long red hair I paid particular attention to adding depth at the root, so I added more base. Then working through the lengths, I wanted one copper to have more vibrancy so added more booster and then with the second formulation I wanted it to be lighter, so I chose a shade lighter without booster to add contrast.

4 For a pumpkin orange colour, it’s important with formulation to mix lots of different shades together to create a really seamless look, especially when blending on buzzed hair. For this look, I started with one shade and then added more pigment to the same bowl as I went through the hair. This allows for creative control and allows you to adapt the shade as you move through the technique.
