Life Tips:

1. A healthy lifestyle is important, but always maintain balance. Life is short, eat the cake!

2. You will never find the time, you must make the time

3. Your work matters, your consistency matters, your ideas matter, your presence matters.

This year has been pronounced as the year of the blonde and unsurprisingly that’s exactly what clients are asking for. Whether they’re natural blondes, soon-to-be blondes, or want a breath-taking balayage, it’s safe to say that stylists can gear up to transform many a Norma Jean into a Marilyn.

Now, stylists, to achieve the perfect blonde shade takes a lot of skill and know-how. But, bright, healthy blondes are also largely based on first knowing your client’s hair and maintenance habits, then ensuring the blonde hair stays healthy, and finally keeping it blonde between appointments.

So, here are my tips on how to keep your blondes beautiful.

Before you colour your client’s hair

A perfect blonde is made even before colour touches the hair. So, before the very first brush stroke, ask your client how committed they are to follow-up appointments so that your technique considers monthly touch-ups or allows for regrowth. Also, make sure you know how blonde they want to go and consider their natural starting point so that you can recommend a style of blonde that suits them and is easy to maintain.

For those going from dark to completely blonde, remind them that their regrowth will show quicker whether they’ve had a full head colour or highlights. To keep the blonde fresh, they will need touch-up appointments every four to six weeks.

A client who wants natural-looking highlights only needs to be back in the salon every eight to twelve weeks. My advice is to use babylights when doing natural highlight to mimic the brightness of childhood blonde and to give your clients a lower-maintenance option.

The lowest maintenance, however, is a soft balayage. For brunettes and blondes alike, this technique allows them to visit the salon once every four months to refresh their blonde. However, to keep the blonde toned and bright, suggest a colour glossing between appointments.

How to keep blonde hair healthy

Blonde hair always needs a little extra TLC, so when clients ask, recommend home-care solutions that neutralise unwanted tones, brighten the colour, strengthen the hair strand, or add much-needed moisture. Two of my favourite ranges from Wella will lock-down blonde for longer and can be suggested to target your client’s specific needs.

1. For instant vibrancy: Invigo Color Brilliance

Ideal for lending radiance to all hair types, INVIGO Color Brilliance features a Color Protection Shampoo, Vibrant Color Conditioner and Vibrant Color Mask. Suggest your clients use the shampoo and conditioner every time they lather up, then treat mid-lengths and ends to the mask once a week. This easy routine offers up to seven weeks of colour protection.

Part of the INVIGO collection is the Blonde Recharge range, which includes the Cool Blonde Color Refreshing Shampoo. This purple shampoo is perfect for keeping brassy tones at bay. Recommend your clients leave it on for three to five minutes when their strands are looking too warm.

2. For deep hair repair: Fusion

Fusion is one of Wella’s ultimate blonde boosters. When hair has become sensitised after lightening, it becomes dehydrated and brittle, and this is where Fusion does its best work - hydrating and repairing! Specially formulated to penetrate deep into the cortex of each strand, this range instantly strengthens the hair fibre while helping to prevent future hair breakage. There’s an Intense Repair Shampoo, an Intense Repair Conditioner, and an Intense Repair Mask for complete care in this collection.

How to keep blonde hair blonde

Never underestimate the power of a glossing service! Recommend this service to your client if they are prone to brassiness or fading. It’s a quick (think: they can come in in their lunchbreak) treatment that completely freshens their colour and enhances shine. My favourite is a Koleston Perfect Pure Glossing Service - part colour and part deep conditioning mask.

And when your client has been Marilyn-ed remind her to lay off the heat, protect her hair against the sun with a UV protector, and try a water filter to lessen the effects of a harsh water supply.
