  • Images 1 Student Triumphs

Five months ago, Nicole Pearce started her education at Images 1 Hair Academy in Port Elizabeth, as part of the Services Seta-funded training programme for disadvantaged candidates. This talented and ambitious stylist had no previous experience – but thanks to her hard work and the amazing tuition she received at Images 1, she has achieved amazing success. Nicole entered the Sof n’ Free Young Xpert Challenge, and ended up winning the title! “This competition has changed my student’s life,” explains academy principal Anny Britz. “She had never been out of Port Elizabeth, let alone boarding an airplane to Johannesburg, staying in a luxury hotel, and taking part in a production with the likes of Somizi Mhlongo, Amanda Black and Kwesta, as well as some of South Africa’s top hairstylists.” Nicole’s life is forever changed. The young, unemployed, single mother of one now has a magnificent R30,000 cash prize and many doors opened for her, and a bright future awaits. Thanks to Images 1 Hair Academy and Services SETA for providing the education that made this fairytale possible, and to Sof n’ Free for putting together this amazing competition.

  • Rent-A-Chairs Beware

Stephen Delport, CEO of the Bargaining Council, has put together a series of educational videos explaining the risks to salons who operate as rent-a-chairs rather than employing their staff. This series is to help salon owners understand the difference between employees and rent-a-chairs according to the South African Labour Relations Act. There is an important difference between the two and this has implications for the stylist and the salon owner. A person is presumed to be an employee if: a.The manner in which they work is subject to the control or direction of another person. b.Their working hours are subject to the control or direction of another person. c.In the case of a person who works for an organisation, that person forms part of the organisation. d.They have worked for the other person for at least 40 hours per month over the last three months. e.They are economically dependent on the person for whom they work or render services. f.They are provided with tools of the trade or work equipment by the other person. g.They only work for, or render services to, one person. Why do salons choose to have people renting a chair instead of being employed? a.They think they will be exempt from paying contributions to statutory bodies. b.However, this places the most vulnerable employees at risk. c.If the situation goes bad and the rent-a-chair leaves, they will often claim benefits such as leave pay, and will then state that they were an employee according to the list of requirements above. d.The growth in the trend of Rent-a-chairs is not good for the industry. If you would like to address the situation within your salon, or would like to make sure you are operating within the law, contact the HCSBC on 0861 427 227 or queries@hcsbc.co.za or go to www.hcsbc.co.za, and we will do our best to help you!

  • Smoky Grey Colour Recipe from Shawn Bubb at Cutting Edge, Klerksdorp

Shawn Bubb at Cutting Edge Hair, Matlosana Mall, Klerksdorp, recently created this stunning smoky grey transformation on a client. Here is his colour recipe. The hair was lightened with Goldwell OP (Oxycur Platin) bleach powder with 30-vol and Bondpro Plus for 45 minutes. Then I did a bleach bath with equal parts 30 vol, shampoo, and OP which I left for 20 minutes. Hair was tinted with Topchic 10A and 10P and 8SB with 20-vol for 30 minutes. It was then toned with Colorance 10BS and 8SB. We love the shimmering, iridescent effect this recipe created.
