  • Colour Recipe: Radiant Red

Who says blondes have all the fun? Anita, from Hair @ the Hub in Centurion, transformed an outgrown blonde style into the most vivid, amazing, passionate red... the perfect colour for the stunning upstyle she created. Here’s how she did it. Started off on a 6 level with highlights on mid lengths to ends. Bleach bath with Wella Blondor powder bleach to a level 8 ratio The bath was 1 part bleach and 5 parts 4 % Wella Color Touch. She wanted to be a 77/44 on the colour chart but if we had to just apply a 77/44 all the orange in that colour would have been dominant so we used: Half 77/44 and half 77/46 (yes I know I mixed a warm and a cool but it brought that colour right in the middle and it looked like a 77:44 on the colour chart Formula 1/2 77/44+1/2 77/46 + equal amounts of 4% Wella Color Touch As an alternative option, instead of a bleach bath if you did not want to perform this, you could do a colour renew for 45 minutes. • Redken Own It Awards - Results & Winner Interviews

The Redken Own It Awards finals were held on Saturday 9 September at Melrose Arch. This was a fabulous, colourful evening, in true Redken style. It included a presentation by the Redken South Africa art team, a stage show by the iconic guest star Justin Isaac who judged the finals, and the work of the super-talented finalists, live on stage. Watch: Redken Own It Awards - Hairnews Highlights Video Winner Interviews Chellaine Naude: Senior Winner Originally from Johannesburg, Chellaine has worked in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town before finding her ideal workplace at Shag High Voltage Hair. She is a newcomer to the competition world. Q: What inspired you to enter the Redken Own It Awards? A: We were encouraged to enter by our bosses! I have never been someone who wants to show others what I am capable of, and this was my first time doing anything like this. Q: How did you decide what look to create on your model? A: I played around with ideas until I came up with something I thought was amazing. I love cutting, and made the cut the focal point of my look, with a colour that complemented it and didn’t look too busy with the dramatic cut. Q: What was the colour formula and what products did you use? A: I used two colours to obtain a deeper red with a copper reflect on the lighter pieces. The deeper red was Redken Chromatics 6RR with 20 vol. I lifted highlights round my model’s face and at the back, with Redken Flash Lift and 20 vol, and then glazed all over the head with semi permanent 6AA to get a copper shining through the red. I wanted it styled as straight as possible so I softened and texturised the top section, keeping the perimeter solid, and then used 1-United and Iron Shape, styled with Diamond Oil and a little Triple Take hairspray. Q: What was it like on the night of the finals? A: It was very intense but there was a great energy backstage, everyone was nervous and excited. All the contestants were amazing – what an incredible, talented team to compete against. Q: What is your motto for everyday success in the salon? A: You never know enough. You can always learn, from a junior stylist or from people who have been in the industry for years. You never stop learning and by keeping learning, you will become a better stylist. Stay humble and true to yourself. Kirsten Thomas: Junior Winner Kirsten Thomas started hairdressing in 2014 at THASA (The Hair Academy of South Africa). She won the THASA Top Student award in 2014, the Top Theory award in 2016, and graduated as top student with 98%. She was a semi-finalist in the Junior Redken Own It Awards in 2016. Q: What inspired you to enter the Redken Own It Awards? A: I love the thrill of being in the spotlight and showing off my talents, by setting trends and keeping up to date with new industry dynamics and expanding my expertise. Competing and stretching my goals to the max is what makes me tick! I love the Redken brand and their products and the ongoing resources they provide based on inspiration, fashion and innovation. Q; How did you decide what look to create on your model? A: I was inspired by the romance and magic of the Autumn seasonal cycle which is when we traditionally release our mane of richness by incorporating strong vibrant colours, shades and tones. Q: What was the colour formula and what products did you use? A: I used free hand balayage on the ends, foils around the hairline. I did a stretch root application (4Bc plus 20vol peroxide – Chromatics) and a colour melt technique on the mid lengths and ends - colour 1: 07G plus 05NW – colour 2 : toner 9AA plus 9G Q: What was it like on the night of the finals? It was super amazing to be in the same room with so much talent in the industry. Justin Isaacs was really cool and an inspiration, with his contagious high energised vibe, skills and knowledge. It was a well-organized show and very exciting to be a part of it all. Q: What is your motto for everyday success in the salon? A: Life may not be perfect, but your hair can be!

  • Rent-A-Chairs Beware Part 3: Landlords, Clients and the Law

What rights, obligations and legal requirements does a salon owner have, in terms of landlords and clients, if rent-a-chairs are using the salon? Stephen Delport of the Bargaining Council explains. Why do salons choose to have people renting a chair instead of being employed? a. They think they will be exempt from paying contributions to statutory bodies. b. However, this places the most vulnerable employees at risk. c. If the situation goes bad and the rent-a-chair leaves, they will often claim benefits. d. The growth in the trend of Rent-a-chairs is not good for the industry. If you would like to address the situation within your salon, or would like to make sure you are operating within the law, contact the HCSBC on 0861 427 227 or queries@hcsbc.co.za or go to www.hcsbc.co.za, and we will do our best to help you!
