  • Cruise Ship Update: Interview with Nadine Brits, Part 1

While cruise ships are anchored due to Covid-19, the industry is hard at work preparing for reopening as soon as it may safely occur. Recruitment manager Nadine Brits gives an update on the situation in part 1 of a two-part interview. Look out for part 2 in the next couple of weeks. Q: The first question everyone wants to know – is there a timeframe for cruise ships starting to sail again A: Well this is a question I also get a lot via email and social media, and I usually want to respond by saying: if the Covid19 virus could give us a date when it would retire, then I would be able to answer this question much easier! It is a very difficult question, as the answer changes for us on a daily basis too. Cruise ships have been banned till October in the US (This news we received last Friday only). Some ports in Europe are allowing cruise ships, but this is very limited. I can only advise on what we hope for, and we are hoping for November 2020. But that might be very optimistic. Cruising will however be back with a bang once we have the all clear, that we do know. Q: What changes can hairstylists look forward to when cruise ships are back in business, to ensure safety for all? A: Cruise ships have always maintained high hygiene standards. Sanitization stations have been part of each cruise ship for more than 15 years. They are usually found at each entrance to the ship, and before entering any place where food is served. Each crew member in all departments including each of our hairdressers are trained to sanitize their hands and that of their client’s, prior to any service. This has been happening pre-covid, and post Covid-19 these measures will of course be kept in place, with extra measures taken as well. I presume that testing for the virus at the seaman’s medical stage of the application will become part of the protocol now moving forward, as well as prior to joining a cruise ship. There might even be requirements for quarantine time prior to joining a ship as a crew member or as a guest. Masks would possibly also be part of the protocol at the start of things. Only the highest of measures will need to be practiced, to ensure good business and for ships to stay in business. These are all of course subject to change. Q: Please tell us how you are doing your interviews in the meantime and what people can expect in an interview? A: We are currently conducting zoom/skype interviews, and specifically for hairdressers they will need to submit a video of themselves completing certain services, to be sent to the recruitment manager to view, and to note level of practical skill. More information is provided to each candidate at application level. As always you can apply online at www.londonwellnessacademy.com Get on the waiting list now! • 4 Ways to Add Value to Clients' Salon Experience

By: Elizma Crous, Modern Hair & Beauty National Education Manager Image Wella Professionals Adding value to client's salon experiences should be your number one priority right now. The experience is what brings clients into your salon and what draws them back. In this article, we talk about the opportunity you have add value to client's experiences; why emotions play a significant role in adding value; and ways you can increase your value perception. Opportunity to add value The past few months have been tough. We could not express our creativity, our businesses had to endure immense strain, and we had to quickly re-assess and adjust our approaches and offerings. We faced new fears, not only about our health but also for the survival of our industry. It's been challenging, and it will be for the foreseeable future. However, as the saying goes, "in every difficulty lies opportunity". And we've been allowed to form deeper connections with our clients, to re-imagine ourselves and businesses, and to change what isn't working. We're in a position to add value that goes beyond the actual service and price. More than ever, clients want meaning attached to their spend. They want to know who is behind your brand; what you stand for; how your service differs to others; and if they are valued beyond the transaction. Connect through emotion and increase your offering’s value perception The emotional connection clients tie to products and services have been the base on which many successful businesses are built. It seems to be especially important during years of pandemic or scarcity. Image Wella Professionals Emotion stands between buying an R 5000 or R 50 000 watch. Both tell the time; both serve their purpose. However, the value of the more expensive watch lies with the emotion it evokes. For example, when you buy a Rolex, you don't buy it to tell the time. You buy it because of what it stands for and how it makes you feel. Similarly, your clients don't book an appointment for a haircut, colour or blow dry. They book because of how you make them feel: from seeing your posts on social media to enquiring about your services to the service itself, and finally their post-salon experience. Ways to increase your salon’s value perception 1. Position yourself in the industry Does your salon allow you to grow, reach career goals, and is the business aligned to your values? When you're in the right place or building a business that aligns with your goals and beliefs, you're more inclined to connect with clients with whom you can build long-term relationships. They will choose your service or re-book because they believe in what you stand for rather than be overly concerned about the cost. Conversely, when your position is an ill fit, you'll build superficial relationships with clients. It will be only about the service, which can be found somewhere else. 2. Create a brand Your brand is the way for clients to recognise and differentiate you from other salons. It's more than your name and logo. Your brand shows people who you are, what you do, and why you do it. Image Wella Professionals It's expressed in your visuals online and in your salon, how you write on social media or your website, how you answer the phone, and how you interact with clients. Your brand is the essence of your business. That's why it's so important to think about, develop, and then to live your brand because it attracts your ideal clients and makes them stick with you. There are two types of branding to consider as stylists: Define your personal brand A personal brand speaks to your individuality and what you represent. It culminates who you are, your experience and skills and how you express that to clients. An excellent place to grow your personal brand is on social media. Remember that the person and work on social media should be who you are and what you produce. Your account creates an expectation that a client wants to see realised in your salon. Establish your salon brand The salon brand speaks to the business. Why the business exists, what it does, and how it connects its offering to its clients. Your salon brand will personify your business, and this helps you resonate with the type of clients you want to attract. It allows your business to develop into a tribe that includes the salon owners, stylists, and clients. 3. Consultations The consultation sets the tone for clients' experiences in your salon. It allows you to establish trust between you and them. It also affirms your knowledge and skill and gives clients the reassurance that you have listened to what they want, understand their needs, and that you've suggested ideas that will be best for them. Image Wella Professionals It's a crucial moment in the salon because it's where you secure or lose clients. Learn about your client in the consultation. Spend at least fifteen minutes away from your workstation, next to the client and actively listen to everything the client is telling you. Your consultation will then turn into conversion, and many times this becomes a return client and a long-term relationship. 4. Continued Education Continued education elevates your skills and knowledge. In turn, it increases what you're able to offer clients. Understanding the nuances of your craft allows you to personalise services to individual clients. It will enable clients to receive a service that feels tailored, considers their wants, and what is best suited to them. For example, understanding which toner to use in both shade and brand, or how to mix toners will take a highlighting service from, "oh, you got highlights", to "oh my gosh who did your hair!". You want to create gasp moments and opportunities for your clients to refer their friends. Let us know how we can help you increase your value perception through our education and sales offerings. Contact Modern Hair & Beauty About Modern Hair & Beauty Education We’re inspired when we witness stylists sharing ideas, skills, and a commitment to their craft. • Fascinations Hair: Suppliers of Wigs, Toppers and Easihairpro Extensions

50 years ago an idea was born to John Reynolds, Founder of Fascinations Hair. Little did he know that today his business would be behind two of the biggest hair brands in the world. John Reynolds wig brand, Jon Renau is synonymous in the wig business and if you know of anyone that has worn a wig before, chances are that they will know of Jon Renau Wigs. They are industry leaders in alternative hair and hair replacement. All this from a little company that started in Cape Town, South Africa in the late 1960’s. Today Fascinations Hair is still successfully operating and providing wigs for cancer patients throughout South Africa. They are hair specialists in their field. Over the past couple of years, the Topper Range has taken the market by storm. Toppers are not full wigs and provide top of head solutions for all stages of hair loss. Be it beginning, mid to progressive or advanced. They know how many clients are sitting in salon chairs with thinning hair and female pattern baldness and have solutions to meet these client’s needs. Their newest focus is on hair replacement and bondable Toppers. Once applied, the Topper can then be cut-in and styled to achieve a totally custom look! Bondable Toppers stay on for weeks and allow you to enjoy your life without thinking about your hair. There are no limitations! In 2014 Fascinations Hair launched easihair pro, 100% remy human hair tape in extensions that are now widely used in salons nationwide. Easihair pro is the brainchild of Paul Reynolds, John’s youngest son. Easihair pro are on a mission to teach and educate salon professionals worldwide. They embarked on a campaign in 2019 to teach consumers the difference between the good, the bad and the hairy when it comes to extensions that are available. Price, weight and whether the hair is ethically sourced should all be considered when deciding on which brand you are going to offer your clients. If you are looking for solid brands that have been around for years, then Fascinations Hair are the experts to call on. They offer training in both wigs and easihair pro extensions and if you are a salon professional looking for more to offer your clients, then Jon Renau and easihair pro are brands that you should consider. What to Charge for Chair Rental Quick Video How-To: Bubble Braid by Rafael Bueno Goldwell-KMS Virtual Education Calendar: Free Training for the Week Ahead

  • What to Charge for Chair Rental

By Simon Clark, Simon Clark Hairdressing, Port Elizabeth I have noticed some debate on what is an appropriate charge for renting a chair in a salon with some arbitrary amounts being suggested. The most important point to remember is that you are renting out a resource that you are paying money for. Let’s start with the basics. Say you have a salon with 3 working hairdressers, a rent of R12,000.00 a month, and a water and electricity bill of R3,600.00 per month. If I am being practical, I would say that the base rental for the chair should be R4,000.00 per month just for the space in the salon. You are not a charity and do need to run at a profit, so R12,000/4 + 30% gives R4,000.00 just for the space. However this is not all you should charge for. Remember it is your name on the lease and you carry the can for paying it! You need to take into account the wear and tear on your furniture and fittings at 5-10% so R200-400 on top of the R4,000 gives R4,300.00. If you add an extra hairdresser who is just as busy, it is logical your water and electricity will go up proportionately so you will need to charge at least R1,500 for the water and electricity. R1,200 pro rata for the increase plus a margin to cover your costs. This brings us to R5,800.00 at a minimum and that is just a chair with water and electricity. Are their clients going to be paying via your card machine? If so will you be charging them the commission on the machine? As a simple example R100k through the machine at 2.5% commission will cost you R2,500 per month and that is not counting the machine rental. While we are on it you should also be charging a pro rata rate for the salons telephone and wifi of say R350.00 a month. At this time tea and coffee in the salon is not advisable, but at a future time when refreshments are allowed again, will the stylists be serving their own tea and coffee or will they be using yours? If they see 100 clients in a month at R5 a cup of coffee that is R500.00. Remember coffee shops charge R20 a cup and there are plenty of them that are struggling! Will they be supplying their own capes, towels, PPE etc or will you? How much are you going to charge for that? Do you have an operator or cleaner? Will they be using their services too? A support staff salary of say R6,000.00 a month is a pro rata of R1,500.00 but remember you have all the responsibilities of employment so the percentage should be R2,000.00. So, if we add all of this up a reasonable charge to rent a chair in a middle of the road salon in Port Elizabeth should be in the region of R10,000.00 a month. If you are offering most of the above and charging less, it is no wonder so many people want to rent a chair. It makes good business sense to have someone else pay your costs for you! It might be time to rethink your charges so that you know your costs are all covered and that you are able to remain profitable in the longer term.
