- Upcoming Mailer on Friday 7 August: Moving Your Salon Home or to Private Property
Moving salons home was a trend even before the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic itself has put pressure on many salons who were only just making ends meet in shopping centres pre-Covid, or else who have not been able to negotiate new terms with their landlords that will allow them to survive in the “new normal”. Moving a salon to a home environment or onto private property instead of retail premises allows for a saving in rental costs and also for greater flexibility, but it is not as simple as hiring a removal van and installing new plumbing! Moving home requires a change in the way you do business, the marketing you do, how you manage your bookings, how you generate revenue, and it can even mean you need to look for different products and services to meet client’s changing needs. Our “Moving Your Salon Home” mailer covers all the pros and cons of opening a salon at home, and looks at some of the innovative, quality products and services that can help you get off to a fantastic and profitable start in your home environment. We will also interview some of the salon owners who have moved home successfully. Look out for Friday’s mailer and we hope you enjoy the read, and find it inspiring and helpful in these challenging times. You might also enjoy... - Styles: Dual Revolution by Ivan Rodriguez, Mexico
The combination of apparently opposed elements creates a new reality, opposed to the established. It consists of creating a new order in which geometric shapes and tones are challenging, giving way to a new way of thinking. Stripes create new straight lines, opposite and forceful, which become even more differentiated with the colours. Harmony between duality and revolution are the inspiration for a rebellion that is already here. - Salon Costings Part 2: The Home Salon by Simon Clark
By Simon Clark, Simon Clark Hairdressing, Port Elizabeth In my last article I examined the basics required to calculate what a middle of the road salon in Port Elizabeth and arrived at what I am sure we can all agree was the rather unrealistic total of R475.00 for a basic cut. If we look at things rationally though, hairdressers selling their time at a rate of R950.00 per hour is no different from the rate charged by a psychologist who may arguably have lower operating expenses. How did we reach a point where most people in a profession can not charge a basic rate for their time that is equivalent to someone of equal professional standing? I hypothesise that the causes are 2 fold: The first is that hairdressing prices have not kept pace with inflation and that this has been caused by poor costing putting downward pressure on industry prices. Many stylists, from the outset, may be keen to put the blame for the downward pressure on home salons. This got me wondering how much less a home salon can actually charge if they apply a professional approach to their pricing. I roped in a local one to provide me with her basics which where a total rent of R4,200 and a Water and electricity of R2,800. She sees on average 5 appointments a day and charges R200 for a cut. From this I am going to make the following assumptions for the sakes of privacy. We will allocate a 1/3 of her rent and water and electricity to salon costs. We will also use the same allocation for other fixed expenses like the telephone and alarm. Insurance and accounts will stay the same as these are salon specific and unavoidable. I am also allocating a R1,650 marketing and R6,600 management fee as these do not simply disappear because a person is now working from home. The costs break down as follows: If we again apply the same variable costs per appointment R50.00 there are no real savings that can be achieved by moving a salon home and we arrive at a base cost per appointment of R181.28. We double for 50% commission to R362.56 and add our 30% mark up for a profit. There is absolutely no reason why a hairdresser working from home should not apply the same business principles that a big salon does! Which brings us to R471.35. It is business not a charity! This is the frightening bit, according to our numbers the home salon should be charging exactly the same as the shopping centre one to cover what would appear to be far lower costs. The lesson is a harsh one, as an industry we need to urgently get a grip on our costings or we are going to go under fast! Follow Simon Clark Hairdressing on Facebook You might also enjoy... - Turn Your Salon Into a 24 Hour Business
By Terry Miles The salon experience has always been the most important goal for retaining good loyal clients. While that has not gone away, the frequency of client salon visits has been dropping over the years. Now with Covid 19, increasing unemployment and the shortage of qualified hair and skin experts the challenge is going to get greater. Facts: 1. 99% of salon and spa business relies on clients actually being in the salon. 2. Your clients are your clients, whether they are in the salon or not they are still on your client data base. 3. Traditional retail, which relies on shoppers going into shops, is in free-fall while on-line shopping is going through the roof. Opportunity: Taken the above into consideration now is the perfect time to turn your salon into a 24 hour business. How does it work?: Salons and spas will still be open to provide the plethora of services their clients love. Hopefully that will never die. However, if clients know they are able to 'visit' your salon from their smart phone, laptop or tablet, from anywhere, they can be offered or be able to shop additional services for which they don't need to be in the salon. This is e-commerce. What do you need?: The first thing you need is a 4 or 5 page website for your salon. The website should include a home-page which tells them about you, your price list, your e-shop, a current promotions page, a request an appointment page and page for frequently asked questions. If you already have a website you might be able to just add the e-shop and start trading. Your existing website might need updating or, if you don’t already have a website you need to get one. On your e-shop you will list the brands you stock. The client will select the brand and then be able to select from the products listed under that brand. Each item should include a pic of the product as well as a description including the price. The e-shop will have an add-to-cart function and once the client has finished shopping she goes to ‘the checkout’ which shows a summary of her order including final invoice amount. At this point you have the option of selecting one of the on-line payment options or emailing the order through to your salon. The e-shop is a function of your front desk manager and, if the salon is too busy, a second person should be trained to receive the client’s order, create a pro-for a invoice which is sent to the client and upon receipt of payment and then makes the order available for Collection at the salon or delivery via the ever-growing number delivery services that fall into ‘gig economy’. The bottom line is we cannot just sit and wait for business to come to us rather create a shop window that allows you to stay in touch with clients at the same time letting them interact with your business. This means you will never be far from your clients thoughts. An e-shop is not an ‘app’ which has to compete with all the other ‘apps’ clients have on their phones however, a shortcut icon can be added to your clients’ devices which creates a shortcut to your website. During the recent lock-down, salons that have an active website with an e-shop generated turnover because, even though their salons were closed their businesses weren’t. For more information on the e-shop concept contact us. www.mysalonsoftware.co.za aletta@mysalonsoftware.co.za terry@mysalonsoftware.co.za
- Styles: Disutopia by Alfredo Valero
Disutopía, the first collection of this team, refers to the Japanese term dystopia, which is the starting point for the futuristic inspiration of this work. Dystopias describe a dehumanized world, with tyrannical governments that control everything, environmental disasters and other characteristics associated with the cataclysmic decline of society. In art, it has served to alert us on how contemporary societies are heading towards the new order, which has been created from the destructuring of everything human and sensible. Unfortunately, we are heading towards that destiny, an uncertain future in which the creative power of each individual and his own distinction and personalization will triumph over a hypnotized society, where citizens are mere automata. In this near future, only individuality and artistic expression can prevent the complete loss of the human soul and what defines us as thinking, creative and rational beings. This is the starting point of a collection that reflects with its aesthetics an inverted structure to the established, in which reused plastic elements are a protest against the infestation of the environment. For this reason, in Disutopía, hair is the reflection of an identity that does not allow itself to be annulled by social dictates and that finds its lifesaver in the free expression of its individuality, its life saver. Colours boost all of their energy and blend together to shape an emerging and resilient image. The different lengths mark a distance with what is established and this surprising result is the reaffirmation of a self that refuses to be crushed by the dynamics of the environment.
