  • Twincare Professional Outlet Cape Town wins TPO of the Year: Interview with Owner William Grimes

Every year the Twincare Professional Outlet of the Year is awarded. In 2020, this prestigious title was won by TPO Cape Town, owned by William Grimes. In this fabulous interview, William gives inspirational business advice as well as sharing the history of this TPO, his passion for the industry, and some of his most adventurous moments during the challenging times of lockdown. Read and enjoy. TPO Cape Town Details: Address: Unit 9, Highwaypark center, Gold Street, Northgate Estate, Brooklyn Tel: 083 228 2229 Hairnews: You have just won TPO of the year, congrats! Please tell us how you won, and also about your previous wins. William: Thank you! This kind of recognition is very motivating. It is based on the highest percentage growth achieved over previous year’s purchases from our Head Office, Twincare International. Being the biggest depot in the country makes it even harder for us as we have to grow so much more than a smaller depot. This is now the third time we have won this award (2013, 2018 and now 2019) and what makes it even more special is that we won it the year before as well! Two years in a row of best depot growth in the country! Not to forget that part of the prize is attending the a Trade show overseas where you get to give an input on what Twincare imports. I will be attending Cosmoprof Bologna next year. It is amazing to see how big these shows are, and then to try and find the next BIG THING in our industry amongst thousands of stalls. It gives so much perspective on why it is so expensive to import from overseas and then the difficulty of predicting how much to bring in…complying with minimum orders etc. It makes me appreciate what Twincare does for us. Hairnews: I understand your business is celebrating a special anniversary this month - please tell us more about it. William: Yes, we are turning 10 years old this month. A decade of fun! Last year Facebook reminded me that I bought the depot’s bakkie 10 years ago, so we launched a full renovation from depot to more of a shop lay-out. We were even planning a ‘Decadent Decade Dinner’ for all the friends me made in the industry over the last decade, only to find out we bought the bakkie a year before opening and turned 9 last year! LOL! But changing the layout of the depot has made a huge difference. Our average docket value per visitor has grown by more than 60% since changing the shopfitting compared the same period last year before renovating. This is amazing! This is one of the part of owning a business I enjoy the most, monitoring the effect changes make to your turnover… Hairnews: How are you finding business post lockdown and have you had good months since lockdown lifted? If so what would you say the reason is and what have been your bestsellers and your surprise sellers? William: Initially our turnover dropped by 60% and I was really worried, but persistence and adapting to the ‘new normal’ ensured that we boomed to record highs! So many hairdressers left salons to go mobile or work from home and could no longer comply with big minimum orders from Head Office. They all then started buying from us. During lockdown when we could only sell ‘Hygiene products’ the business had to borrow money from savings to survive. But when the industry opened in June we hit a new record month! 10% higher than the highest turnover we have ever done in a month. And when people started buying in for approaching season and to avoid price increases, we hit a new record again and another 10% higher than ever before! This came as a total surprise. Currently our biggest challenge is to buy enough stock in and the right stock for the ‘new normal’. We have increased our stock holding by approximately 30% and my staff knows I want an explanation if we are out of a line item. Since Lockdown we have had the approach that we cannot afford to lose ONE sale due being out of stock! Sounds easy, but difficult when the company is forced to stop paying me for a few months to increase our cash flow for purchasing so much more stock. But the resulting growth is currently sitting Year to Date at just under 20% in spite of the COVID period lost sales! Which is incredible. The biggest surprise brand in my depot is Moroccanoil by far. It has grown by 200% compared to same period last year, mostly due to our biggest salon client’s online store. It seems the exclusivity of Moroccanoil made a lot of people buy it online. The other reason for Moroccanoil’s incredible growth is the weave market, our second biggest Moroccanoil client owns the biggest weave salon in Cape Town city center…this is a new developing market for the original argan oil! Hairnews: We all have those stories during lockdown! What did Cape Town TPO do to assist salons during the difficult times of levels 4 and 5? William: Some of the stories of hardship during the initial levels were really heartbreaking. When we were allowed to sell shampoo, conditioners, cleansers, toners and moisturizers as ‘hygiene products’ by the COVID Committee, Twincare announced the amazing relaxing of all brand rules and allowed all stylists to sell any brand (whether they were a stockist or not) to their clients to assist them. We jumped onboard and delivered for hours after work a shampoo to this address, a moisturizer to that address and repeat. I remember one evening after driving around for more than two hours delivering to hairdressers client’s houses, I stood in the rain outside this mansion in Oranjezicht waiting for the lady of the house to walk all the way to the front door, with my two hungry dogs in the car waiting… and no take away food or delivery food being available. I thought to myself, this is not what I signed up for! But we did what we needed to do and look where we are today! There was also this lady in Seapoint doing hair in her flat to put food on her table without her block’s Body Corporate’s permission…and we had to meet in the basement of the building like drug dealers. I would phone her when near and she would open the parking area’s door from her flat allowing me to drive to the darkest spot in the basement parking where she will get into my car to get the products to do hair. She is now one of our most loyal clients. Hairnews: What are your main principles of running a good business and how have they contributed to your success? William: As Twincare’s Stav always puts it; there is no magic in business. Keep doing the right things and you are bound to be successful. I can only speak as to what is important to me personally; I watch my cashflow daily and it influences every decision I make for the business I HATE not having ALL the line items in a range! Stock holding is sooo important, but the right stock! Once a day I ask Gerard(my depot co-ordinator) what we could not supply to any client during that day and WHY A good relationship with my supplier and landlord! Both of these helped me tremendously during the initial stages of the lockdown! Twincare was very patient and understanding with my payments towards my account and my landlord suspended my rent completely! One thing Twincare drilled into us when I joined is ‘deliver on your promises’…at my depot we really try to exceed expectations and failing that… COMMUNICATE! And lastly I always tell my staff that in our industry small things don’t mean a lot, it means EVERYTHING! The wrong product delivery can not only upset the client, but also make the whole order unprofitable. Hairnews: What sets your TPO apart and gives it the winning edge? William: This is very simple…our relationship with our clients! Our whole industry is ‘relationship driven’ and I have been fortunate to have had staff that understands this vital component of our success. Believe me there have been days where I have gone home or sent staff home when we were not in a good mood. It is so nice when clients love being in our depot and visiting us instead of ‘shopping’. Hairnews: What made you decide to get into the hairdressing game as a non-hairdresser? William: I think my whole life set me up for where I am today. I was a Trade Advisor to the government on imports and exports when I fell in love with a hairdresser… we started opening salons together and he worked on the floor whilst I ran the financial and personnel side of the business. It was here where I learned so much about running a successful salon which enables me today to advise clients when they are opening their salons as I have been there many times myself. At a stage I wanted to go work for either REDKEN or PAUL MITCHELL and phoned Twincare International first as they were then distributing REDKEN. Stav interviewed me and appointed me as an educator under the legendary Darrel Watt. In a few months I will have been with Twincare for 25 years! And learned so much from both Stav on the business side of supplying products and then of course the best training master on the structure of hair, law of color and lets not forget science behind perming from Darrel Watt! Twincare allowed me to shadow Darrel for 6 months before starting to train on my own, it was amazing! Every day I use what he taught me when clients ask advice on the floor of my depot. This knowledge imparts confidence in clients that they can trust my advice, which in turn makes more sales for the depot. When we lost REDKEN we gained my other passion brand namely PAUL MITCHELL. The Universe knew which company to send me to… I am proud to be associated with Professional Only products and with a company that became my family over the years. So when the opportunity came to open a Twincare Outlet in Cape Town I jumped at it, and here we are 10 years later! Everything I learned through the years are applied daily in my depot and dealings with our clients. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter of my life holds for me…I am truly a blessed man! CANSA is determined to reach their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Facts about Breast Cancer in South Africa 1. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among South African women, with one in 31 women diagnosed in her lifetime. This statistic spans all race groups. 2. The older you are, the greater risk you face when it comes to developing breast cancer. However, the disease can and does strike women under 40. 3. You should examine your breasts every month, and go for regular mammograms from the age of 40, because when detected early, breast cancer has up to 95% chance of successful treatment. 4. One of the greatest risk factors for breast cancer is obesity, especially after menopause. Other risk factors include being a smoker, not being physically active, consuming alcohol, and age, among others. 5. Women who have breastfed, especially for longer than a year, may face a lower breast cancer risk than women who haven’t ever breastfed, studies have found. 6. A high-fat diet and one that is very dense in animal protein (especially red meat) can increase your risk of breast cancer. Fill your diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and healthy proteins like fish and seafood, white-meat poultry, eggs and legumes. 7. Studies suggest that women who suffer from stress are twice as likely to develop breast cancer than those who don’t experience stress. 8. If you want to help reduce your risk of breast cancer, do the following, starting right now: stop smoking; limit your alcohol intake; exercise at least moderately (aim for three times a week, for 30 minutes each time); find out what your healthy weight is and stick to it; always wear sunscreen when you’re outdoors, in every season; revamp your diet, cutting out junk food, sugar and high-fat foods, and try to keep stress to a minimum. • Business Advice: Don’t Cancel your Life Insurance

Lockdown has really damaged the economy and the Hair and Beauty industry has been feeling the pinch. Or should we say the PUNCH. Times are tough. The pandemic has affected the income of millions of South Africans. But as people scramble to find ways to reduce their monthly expenses, there’s one monthly expense which should always be on the list: your life insurance. Not having any life insurance or cancelling what you currently have will not only remove the benefits it offers and leave your loved ones at risk, but it could be harder to get life cover as time goes on. Remember, depending on the cover you have, Insurance policies don’t only pay out on your death. If you become ill or injured permanently or temporarily your income could be protected and there are also options for severe and critical illness payouts. Policies differ and so do the offerings from Insurance companies. You take out insurance for one main reason: to protect income so that your family’s financial future is secure if anything happens to you, and to allow them to keep paying for things like education, the home loan and day-to-day expenses. If you don’t have a policy or cancelled a policy, that income protection goes away, leaving your loved ones at risk should anything happen to you. If your income falls away, would it create financial stress to your family? If the answer is yes, you should do whatever you can to get cover or hold on to your current life insurance. If you are over 55 or have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart conditions, pre-cancerous illnesses etc., holding onto your current policy is a very good idea because getting exclusions on a new policy is a huge risk. If you have something simple like high blood pressure or arthritis or any other low risk illness that you have recovered from or being treated for, in that instance a brand new policy at a low monthly premium with low premium increases per year is a good decision. You could speak to your own Financial Advisor about both options or contact me and I will be happy to advise you further. Candice Daniels Cell: 082 962 2999 Email: candiced@brightrock.co.za

  • Gavin Botha: Why Formal Salons Will Survive and Thrive Post Lockdown

Industry icon Gavin Botha, co-owner of Tangles in Rosebank, Jhb, speaks to Jassy Mackenzie on his view of the industry post-lockdown, why he believes clients will come back to the formal salon environment and why this environment is so crucial to a thriving industry. He discusses why too much fragmentation, one-person shows and freelancers are detrimental to the industry. Before and During Lockdown Before lockdown began, there was an atmosphere of fear in the country as we prepared for the unknown. With lockdown imminent, salons worked like crazy in order to service clients before it was imposed. Lockdown and Adapting to Change Before lockdown our industry had a well organised structure with every part of the structure playing an important role – from the EOHCB and Bargaining Council, all the way through the salon, the landlord, the clients, and including the suppliers. However if there was one thing lockdown taught us it was that in order to survive, businesses had to adapt! We have to regroup and rebuild to restore our world and grow. Working Illegally to Keep Food on the Table In a crisis situation, with UIF slow to pay out, I had to do whatever I could to survive and pay the bills. Fear set in as I travelled door to door with my boot packed with stock and equipment, rinsing clients over baths, just to provide a service. I was not at my best! Cut and colour were the only services offered, none of which were catwalk-worthy! This was pure survival mode. Back to Work and Seeing the Industry Fragment The EOHCB and Council finally persuaded government to reopen the industry with strict safety controls. I was so happy to get back to work with the salon at 30 percent capacity but I was concerned by what I saw – all across the country, contracts were broken, stylists were not returning to work, salons were closing down, and hairstylists were setting up as freelancers and one person shows. The problem is that these new freelancers were not complying with all the regulations! The Disadvantages of Home Visits and Home Environments Home visits are limited in the services you can offer and they are also a higher risk to the hairstylist as you are entering an unsanitised environment. I question whether home visits provide the same quality of service. In a salon, you can provide a safe, warm, friendly atmosphere that helps the client to relax and enjoy the service, as well as escaping the pandemic for a while in a sanitised environment. In a salon you have a full backup staff and this provides a special, seamless experience that guarantees the client will return. A formal salon environment supports the industry through the correct legal contributions to the industry organisations. These organisations are in place to protect the industry and work for the industry. There is a lot of wrong being done by going solo! Salon Safety at Tangles At Tangles we are a “home environment” in that we operate from a private house. However we do so as a fully staffed, fully equipped and very spacious salon. I found in our environment, and in most formal salons whether they are in a shopping centre or in private property, that the environment is spacious by nature and already well ventilated. In addition, hairdryers provide additional movement of air. In this environment if you are responsible and maximise safety precautions, it really is a minimum risk environment. Best of all you can do this with a full backup service, with every person in the salon working to make the client feel special and well cared for. The Limitations of Going Solo or Freelancing Having done this out of desperation during lockdown I can say from experience that going solo is not always the right solution. Yes, you make a quick buck, but it is a much more fragile setup. A salon service is all about a motivated group effort – from the front desk to the styling station to the basin. Running a full salon comes at a cost, as it costs a lot to be correctly stocked, but it means that you can offer every service to every client who walks in your door! Plus, the wheel of fashion turns, and inevitably products that have stood on your shelves for a couple of years will suddenly back in fashion again! Additionally, by going ‘underground’ you may be avoiding paying the correct contributions, tax or VAT. This means you are not supporting the industry or contributing to the fiscus and this means you are part of the problem rather than helping make South Africa better. It is also worth noting that salons who were not doing things correctly were the ones who found themselves with the most serious problems when lockdown arrived. Keeping Standards High No Matter Where Being in a centre is expensive. Rentals are high and it is not viable for every salon business. However the alternative is to create a formal, viable, thriving salon business in an actual property – even better, invest in the property and you then have an asset that can be sold at a later stage if needed. Wherever your salon is located you need to keep it an inspirational environment. This is much harder in a small or home salon but it is so important. Even though we consider ourselves at Tangles to be a full, professional salon, I am always aware that I need to dress just as if I was heading out to a shopping mall, and not the way I would “at home”. You are walking into a “look” when you walk into a salon. The environment is all about fashion. Doing hair in a client’s home when she is in her pajamas is not inspirational and it doesn’t help you perform at your creative best. Chair rentals are an option for salons who need to supplement their income and who are finding it difficult to attract the right staff, but it is important to remember that people often undervalue their chair rentals. You need to include lights, water and maintenance. Also, you need to be prepared for “drama” if the wrong person rents. You need to have a very watertight contract in place. Working to a Bigger, Brighter Future My take home message is: Do not move home if you are working for a viable salon! These salons are like gold and they will become destinations once again (and already are!) And even if you have to make a move, think carefully about what you are doing it. Always try to plan for growth. Do you really want to stay a one person business? There is no community work ethic, nobody to bounce ideas off, no support or laughter, a smaller range, and you can end up getting too “intimate” and relaxed with clients and less professional. Even if lockdown has left you in a predicament, you should look at how you can regroup and regrow. Get together, unite, attract like minded people. Turn your one man show into a two or three man show. Strive for greater things and do not remain stuck in a limited environment. There is so much more that you can do and be! And please be aware that it is your responsibility to register yourself formally and contribute correctly. It’s all about supporting our industry and each other.
