- How to Prepare for a Bridal Hair Trial - 5 Tips for Success
Caralee Pridemore, Sam Villa Ambassador, specializes in bridal services and says the ONLY way to meet a bride's expectations is to go to TRIAL, and has these 5 tips for success. How is a stylist supposed to meet a bride's expectations on her wedding day? It's a tall order, and bridezilla or not, there's a lot of in the bridal hair market to make things PERFECT! Caralee Pridemore, Sam Villa Ambassador @caraleestyles, specializes in bridal services and says the ONLY way to meet a bride's expectations is to go to TRIAL, and has these 5 tips for success. 1. Arrive Ready: Have guests wash hair with a volumizing shampoo, massage a dime size of conditioner throughout and dry hair before arriving. Starting with a clean canvas allows styling products to be layered to build a solid foundation for hold, without older product buildup getting in the way. 2. Products: Advise against using softening products like leave - in conditioners and masks, they create too much slip. The goal is to get the most grip out of hair so the style will last all day/night. So, applying a blowout cream on ends, volumizing mousse at roots and then blow drying hair upside down would be the best styling option to create tons of volume and a nice foundation for an updo. 3. Texture: When up styling, the more texture the better, it creates fullness and longevity. One of the easiest ways to fashion texture is with the Sam Villa Signature Series Textur Professional Texturizing Iron. If a bride is hesitant, explain that by crimping key sections with light compression 1 - 2" off the scalp, the hair cuticle expands and creates massive volume. And, since it is only used in certain areas, other hair around the hairline lays over it hiding the markings yet exploding with sky high lift. 4. Extensions: If a client wants a half up half down style with fullness, but doesn't have a lot of hair, offer extensions. Discuss which option is best, permanent or short term (wedding only), and think about their budget and add on fees. Hair padding = add on fee, day of prep = add on fee, etc.... 5. Accessories: Accessories help to tell the story and set a vibe. Is the wedding rustic chic, posh, boho, beachy, or urban? There are unlimited options when it comes to accessories, have some on hand to show what could work, or advise them to bring what they have already chosen. And don't forget the veil!!! Have them bring it for the trial, along with pictures of the dress, as the neckline also comes into play. "Schedule trial runs 4 - 6 months prior to the wedding to make sure you and your guest are a good fit and can meet each other's expectations," says Pridemore. Looking for inspiration? Check out Caralee Pridemore's coiled Dutch braid with cascading curls. Step 1: Section hair at the nape and work up and around the head. Use the Sam Villa Texture iron 1 - 2" off scalp and about 3 - 4" down the hair strand to amplify volume. Use the Sam Villa Pro Results 3-in-1 Blow Dry Hot Brush and run it through the ends of the hair. This pumps up volume while removing unwanted frizz, creating the perfect canvas. Step 2: Alternate curls all over the head using the Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron and Wand 1". Step 3: Backcomb the crown and pin the section in the center. Starting from the right, take a large section(depending on hair type) and create a dutch braid. Cross it over the pinned center section placing it to the left. Use Verb Volume Dry Texture Spray and Powder to increase the size of the braid and expand curls. Step 4: Repeat Step 3 but take the Dutch braid section from the left and cross over to the right. Pin in place. Step 5: Create the last Dutch braid on the right and cross back over to the left. Step 6: Once all of the braids are pinned in place, add final details, such as decorative bridal pins or accessories (a leaf vine was used here). Finish with AIIR Professional Flexible Hold AIIR Spray for longevity. Article credit: Samvilla.com

- EOHCB: Managing COVID-19 Grief
With the COVID-19 Pandemic affecting each and every one of us differently we are looking at the different stages of COVID-19 grief and how to accept the new normal that we find ourselves in. Stages of COVID-19 grief: Denial: “The COVID-19 pandemic does not affect me.” Anger: “The COVID-19 pandemic is imposing on my life and taking away my normal activities.” Bargaining: “I will wear my mask and follow the guidelines and then everything will get better, right?” Sadness: “I don’t know when the COVID-19 pandemic will end.” Acceptance: “The COVID-19 pandemic is here; I have to live with it and figure out how to keep going.” Steps to acceptance: 1. Check in with yourself How are you currently feeling? At what stage of COVID-19 grief are you? TIP: Do not compare yourself or your own situation to others who have it “worse” 2. Remind yourself that: We are all in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and yes, it is hard! Take everything day-by-day and do your best. There are things you can do in the comfort of your own home that can help your feelings and thoughts. 3. Radical acceptance and moving forward: When you accept the current situation that you are in, you can be honest about how you feel. Accepting your situation allows you to focus on how you are going to respond to the situation. Always focus on what you can control, follow the COVID-19 regulations and protocol’s, limit news intake, and most importantly self-care. Daily guide to assist when you feel overwhelmed: Sleep 8 hours. Eat well and stay hydrated. Exercise. Self-care. Limit news. Follow COVID-19 regulations. Check in with someone supportive. Make time for positivity and laughter. How to stay optimistic: Set goals for yourself. Try to find the positive in a negative situation. Practice gratitude. Connect with positive and supportive family, friends and colleagues. Do an end of day check-in and ask yourself: “what positive outcome can I take from today?” EOHCB www.eohcb.co.za/contact-
- Get the Look: Afro Fade from Jim Shaw, TONI&GUY Billericay, UK
Jim Shaw, owner of TONI&GUY, Billericay and award winning men's hairdresser. With this image it was all about creating a style that was true to myself and my signature look – clean and precise. Precision for me is about creating looks with strong outlines that keep the hair look fresh and on trend and play a real emphasis on the hair, whilst also complimenting the face and the bone structure of the model or client you’re working on. Precision cuts help to create a striking finish and when the image is cropped correctly and tight, it further emphasises the sharpness of the hair. For this look in particular, ourmodel Marvin’s bone structure was as strong as the linear finish we created within his hair, it was exactly what we wanted to create in terms of strength and finish. Steps for creating the look To create this look I started by using clippers to create a fade haircut, leaving length on top but shortening the sides of the hair. Guards were used to gradually fade and blend the hair for a precise and clean finish. Once the clippers have been used to fade the hair, I then like to use them to clean up areas around the neckline and hairline to create more precise, sharp lines. I then always like to go in with scissors to get closer to the hair and to clean up the hair look and ensure it looks neat and tidy on top. Using the clippers, we took out a chunk of the hair on top and then neatened this up again with scissors. We did this to create more of a unique and statement look that further draw your eyes to the hairstyle. To finish, I used American Crew Fibre to keep the shape we created in place and provide the hair with high hold and low shine that allowed the hair to look more natural in appearance and although little to no product had been used.

The Services SETA is following the staggered approach in implementing these short skills programmes. Currently, training for 1750 learners is being rolled out in these areas and there are still outstanding learners as per the contracts with the service providers. (h) New Discretionary Grants windows: No new funding windows have been opened recently. The training needs that were identified by the previous chamber committee are still being kept as the training needs of the chamber until they are reviewed in the next meetings once the chamber committee is established. This means that should the organisation be looking at opening a funding window, this wishlist of training needs will be put forward. The Education, Training and Development Quality Assurance unit “ETDQA” was previously accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority “SAQA” in accordance with the SAQA Act 58 of 1995. The scope and functions of the Education, Training Quality Assurance “ETQA” units have changed in line with the mandate of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations “QCTO”. The Development of Occupational Standards and Qualifications is one of the Services SETA’s priorities in supporting the stakeholder to ensure that there are Occupational Qualifications to respond to skills development priorities of the country. The availability of occupational Qualifications facilitates Skills Development that supports the Labour Market needs Occupational Qualifications means: A qualification that is associated with a Trade Occupation or a Profession resulting from workbased Learning and consisting of Knowledge Standards, Practical Standards and Work Experience Standards. The Services SETA, having been nominated as the DQP (Development Quality Partner) has managed to successfully develop and register 6 Occupational Qualifications with the QCTO in the last 4 years, of which the Occupational certificate: Hairdresser (102497) being one. When Occupational qualification are developed and successfully registered it also takes the place of the historic (legacy qualifications). This DOES NOT mean that the qualification is no longer valid. It only means that a new qualification is being taught. All qualifications when registered have an end date. When industry stakeholders provide comment and request for an extension of that specific qualification it will be submitted to the QCTO with a request to extend. With the hairdressing occupational certificate, the request was for the legacy qualification to be replaced.
