- Omicron Update: Explosive Growth in Cases - Hospitalisations Close Behind
Making an Informed Decision about Vaccination – What you need to know A Vaccinated Industry is a Safe, Sustainable and Successful Industry Omicron cases are growing really fast. Like explosive, skyrocketing, vertical growth fast. If we continue this rate of spread, I would venture to say that there is no modern day virus that has spread this fast and this far ever before. Bottom Line: Case counts are going to get very high. As high as our testing capacity can take. While the severity of disease is reduced (due to immunity or intrinsic changes, we don’t know), the mere number of infections will increase hospitalizations. - American epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina, Dec 17 2021 While Omicron seems to be outpacing the Delta variant and MAY be milder in individual cases, it’s only been less than 4 weeks since the discovery of the new variant. We still can’t say what the outcome will be in another 4 weeks. To paraphrase in a South African context, please use caution this holiday season. While the percentage of double vaccinated South Africans is increasing, there are still 60% of South Africans, so many vulnerable and immunocompromised, relying on the rest of us, the small “herd”, to protect them through no choice of their own. While your individual risk may be low, Omicron presents significant societal risk to so many. And the more who remain unvaccinated, the more the uncontrolled Omicron cases create a large pool where more variants can develop, possibly ones that are even more resistant to vaccination. And the Festive Season has only just begun, with Gautengers already moving out to other provinces to enjoy gatherings of friends and families. Omicron Update: Dec 17 “Omicron in Europe is well on its way. The UK continues to breaks case records. On Wednesday, the UK reported 78,610 new cases—their biggest one-day increase on record. Then, on Thursday they broke that record again and reported 88,376 new cases. France also recorded their biggest one-day increase on record with 65,713 cases. Denmark has the highest case load they’ve ever had. In all of these places, Omicron is largely driving explosive spread, but Delta is still around too. “ Click HERE for full article. There is no way to know whether South Africa will follow those trends. Current news seems to indicate double vaccinated individuals, while more susceptible to Omicron than Delta or Beta, appear to experience the milder cases. There is still not enough data to show the exact numbers on this yet, though. But a critical aspect on those who would like to rely on their own immunity lies in the fact that there is no guarantee that previous infection will protect from reinfection with Omicron. Omicron: evidence shows it evades immunity from earlier infection more than other variants Dec 19, 2021 Omicron is far more infectious than Delta and has spread like wildfire through the UK, Gauteng, and Europe, and now the US. Click HERE for full article. Omicron spread about 70 times quicker than Delta in human bronchial samples, a lab study found Dec 16, 2021 Are cases going to be milder? The jury is still out and it’s too soon to tell. “Still, the findings are in line with reports from the European Medicines Agency and US CDC that, so far, Omicron seems to be spreading faster but cases have been mostly mild. Click HERE for full article. However, deaths and hospitalisations have also been reported after Omicron. Even a less severe virus can seriously harm and kill many people if it spreads across vast populations. The World Health Organization has warned that it is still too early to conclude that Omicron is "milder" than other variants. "We're concerned that people are dismissing Omicron as mild. Surely we have learned by now that we underestimate this virus at our peril," WHO leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday. Whether Omicron will cause more virus in the upper airways but less virus in the lungs, and whether that will then translate into less severe disease, remains to be seen. Muge Cevik, an infectious diseases expert at the University of St Andrews in Edinburgh, Scotland, argued in a Twitter thread on Wednesday that much remains unknown. "The only thing I am sure of is that Omicron will spread so quickly through the population, making it likely impossible to contain even with the most stringent measures & giving us very little time over the next few weeks. So get your vaccines & boosters!" she said. So far South Africa remains at Adjusted Level 1, and the government has not imposed stricter national restrictions, either on movement, travel or alcohol sales (Heaven forbid!), but this is all dependent on how safe South Africans keep themselves during this time. Please mask up, keep gatherings to a minimum and stay safe during this festive season! - A Message to the Industry from Chris Stofberg, MD, Modern Hair and Beauty South Africa
As we head towards the end of the year most of us start thinking about what we’ve achieved and not achieved and what we would want to do differently or better in the coming year. I’ve never really thought of these as New Year’s resolutions. I’ve always thought of a New Year’s resolution as something very specific and practical, like giving up smoking, losing weight, starting to exercise, and something which most people actually never stick to. But that of course is not the case at all. It’s natural to think about which aspects of one’s everyday life one can improve on, and I’ve been doing this for years, without thinking of it as a New Year’s resolution. These have ranged from drawing up a plan for how to spend my time each day more productively, to mapping out the goals I want to achieve in the various categories of my life. Of course, we don’t always do this only at the beginning of each year, but I think the timing lends itself to it happening far more as we move from one year to the next. It’s clear that the Covid-19 pandemic has given all of us a major wake-up call to review the way we live our lives. Not only have we been made acutely aware of how fragile life is, but even more so we’ve been made aware of the significance of freedom of movement. Millions of people have reassessed their lives with record resignations happening in the USA, prompting the term, The Great Resignation. Microsoft research apparently indicates that 40% of the global workforce is considering leaving their employer this year. The world has experienced a major shakeup, but not everyone is responding to it in the same way. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to work from home have mostly enjoyed it and have seen a definite improvement in lifestyle and stress management. I have however heard of a lot of people who do not enjoy the solitude of working from home, and who need the interaction with colleagues, not just from a social aspect but also for the stimulation required for improved or effective work performance. The biggest realisation for me has been the significance of relationships in our lives. Whether it is with your spouse, your children, your extended family, colleagues, those who report to you at work, or maybe those who you must report to? How we experience these relationships, how they make us feel, what we achieve or don’t achieve through them. This is our life! There simply is nothing that has a bigger impact on us than this. So ask yourself, how’s that working out for you? … I’ve done that. I can tell you there is a lot of room for improvement. But how does one improve that? If I want to get my body fit and healthy, I can exercise, and I can change what I eat. But how do I improve my ability to communicate with those around me in a way that makes our relationships flourish, that we have a positive impact on each other? How do I act to ensure that we’re enjoying each other’s company instead of arguing or in the case of work colleagues, that we’re achieving the level of productivity or creativity that is required? Imagine There is a specific skill that is required to be successful at “managing” relationships. Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer coined the term ‘Emotional Intelligence’ in 1990 describing it as “a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action” In the 1990’s Daniel Goleman became aware of Salovey and Mayer’s work, and this eventually led to his book, Emotional Intelligence. Goleman argued that this skill was in fact the most crucial driver for success in business. Far more than cognitive intelligence. He described emotionally intelligent people as those with four characteristics: They were good at understanding their own emotions (self-awareness) They were good at managing their emotions (self-management) They were empathetic to the emotional drives of other people (social awareness) They were good at handling other people’s emotions (social skills) Thank goodness there is a way for us to improve how we fare in each of these characteristics. There are many books and articles one can read on the topic. But just like there are many gym routines and exercise plans that could help you to get fit, unless you actually perform the exercises over a prolonged period of time, you will not strengthen those muscles. The same applies to the “muscles in our brain”. I have been fortunate enough to link up with Mark Baker again after many years. Mark is the CEO and co-founder of Mygrow, a company that specializes in building emotional intelligence, both for individuals and for teams. This is the third time I’m talking about EQ and promoting this course. I’m doing it because I am absolutely convinced of the benefits, and of the need for this. It is something that every person should be doing. In fact, it should be a compulsory subject at school. Leadership Mygrow offer a 7-day free trial for anyone who wants to experience it first before committing. Simply click on this LINK and take it from there. Finally, a massive thank you to each one of our clients who have supported us during the past year. Although it has been a bit of a let off compared to 2020, this beloved country of ours presented us with new challenges, which I don’t think are going to disappear any time soon. Despite that, and in fact, because of that, it is vital that we prepare ourselves to be able to tackle the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities, which we will only be able to do if we have the strength of mind for it. I wish everyone a wonderful break, as short as it may be, and a fresh perspective on the New Year. To everyone celebrating Christmas, I wish you a special time with your families. It’s my favourite time of the year. The tree and decorations are up and my spirit is lifted. - EOHCB: COVID-19 Vaccinations in the Workplace as an Operational Requirement
COVID-19 Vaccinations in the Workplace as an Operational Requirement and adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. An employer who wishes to move towards a formal COVID-19 Vaccination Management Policy should follow the above process. First take decision to implement the legal requirement with such a management policy based on the nature and operational requirements of the workplace and business. Secondly, engage and consult with the industry trade union about the decision(s) taken based on the nature and operational requirements of the workplace and business. Thirdly, conduct a COVID-19 risk assessment to determine and evaluate the risk(s) that COVID-19 poses to the business and its operations. Based on the outcome of the risk assessment, decide whether it requires mandatory, voluntary, or a blended (mandatory & voluntary) policy to manage the pandemic in the workplace based on the Occupational Health and Safety Act, according to Section 8, the employer must, where reasonably practicable, provide and maintain a safe, healthy work environment that is without risk to employees. It is the duty of every employee at work to take reasonable care for the health and safety for himself as well as other persons. Every worker is in other words responsible to take care of his or her own health and safety. The unsafe acts of the worker may not negatively impact or endanger others. Other persons normally include co-workers, contractors, visitors and even the public. The employee is also duty bound to co-operate with the employer where the OHS Act imposes a duty or requirement to be performed or complied with. Workers are legally bound to comply with the prescriptions of the OHS Act. Employees should always carry out and obey lawful orders and obey the health and safety rules and procedures laid down by the employer. Fourthly, the outcome and decision derived from the risk assessment needs to be communicated to the workforce, future employees/workers, as well as suppliers and temporary employment services with sufficient notice for compliance must be provided. Once this has been communicated, then lastly, the employer must attend to exemptions made by employees, suppliers, and temporary employment services. Employers and employees should treat each other with mutual respect. A premium is placed on public health imperatives, the constitutional rights of employees and the efficient operation of the employer’s business. Exemption applications can be based on an employee’s Constitutional grounds insofar as, the right to bodily integrity in section 12(2) and the right to freedom of religion, belief and opinion in section 13 of the Constitution. Medical grounds refer to issues of an immediate allergic reaction of any severity to a previous dose or a known (diagnosed) allergy to a component of the COVID-19 vaccine. Should an investigation determine a valid exemption application, employers should keep in mind that a dismissal based on operational requirements are always the last resort. An alternative to a dismissal would be to require of an employee to provide the employer with a negative PCR test every 72 hours. The cost of such a PCR test could either be carried by the employer or employee or split equally. This will be subject to negotiation. The employer could advise the employee that as an alternative to a dismissal, the employee is required not only to provide a negative PCR test every 72 hours, but also responsible for the cost of such a test. Employers are welcome to contact the EOHCB to purchase our Vaccination Toolkit which provides for a Mandatory, Voluntary, and Blended COVID-19 Vaccination Management Policy and risk assessment(s) associated. For inquiries, please contact use via: admin@eohcb.com. Annexure C of the Occupational Health and Safety Directive Issued in June 2021 Guidelines if an employer makes COVID-19 Vaccinations Mandatory These guidelines are intended to guide employers, employer organisations, employees, trade unions, conciliators, arbitrators and the courts in determining the fairness of a mandatory vaccination policy and its implementation. These guidelines deal with the key aspects of a policy requiring mandatory vaccination in the workplace. The guidelines are stated generally and departures from them may be justified in proper circumstance. These guidelines are not intended as a substitute for collective agreements or agreed procedures between employers, their employer organisations and trade unions. The key principle of these guidelines is that employers and employees must treat each other with mutual respect. A premium is placed on public health imperatives, the constitutional rights of employees and the efficient operation of the employer’s business. Subject to any applicable collective agreement, a plan as contemplated above that requires all employees identified in terms of that Direction to be vaccinated in accordance with the national COVID-19 vaccination roll out plan, should provide the following: • Every employee identified by the employer as outlined above must be notified of – (a) the obligation to be vaccinated as and when a vaccination becomes available for that employee; (b) the right of an employee to refuse to be vaccinated on constitutional or medical grounds; (c) the opportunity for the employee, at the employee’s request, to consult a health and safety representative or a worker representative or trade union official. Constitutional grounds – are the right to bodily integrity in section 12(2) and the right to freedom of religion, belief and opinion in section 13 of the Constitution of South Africa. Medical grounds – for the contra-indication of vaccination include: a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose or to a component of the COVID-19 vaccine; or an immediate allergic reaction of any severity to a previous dose or known allergy to a component of the vaccine. A blood clotting problem, may also be contraindicated before or after receiving the first dose of a two-dose vaccine. Evidence is showing that being vaccinated during pregnancy is safe. In addition to paid time off (refer Sick Pay Fund or UIF) for an employee who is scheduled for a vaccine during ordinary working hours, if necessary, transport to and from the vaccination site allocated should be provided by the employer. Should an employee have a severe reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine and the employee has exhausted all sick leave and Unemployment Insurance Fund illness benefit, the employer should give the employee paid time off to recover. The Compensation Fund for Occupational Injuries and Diseases will also cover an employee who were subjected to a mandatory vaccination policy in the event of severe reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine. If an employee refuses to be vaccinated on any constitutional or medical ground, the employer should: • Counsel the employee and if required, allow the employee to seek guidance from a health and safety representative, worker representative or trade union official; • Refer for further medical evaluation should there be a medical contraindication for vaccination; • If necessary, take steps to reasonably accommodate the employee in a position that does not require to be vaccinated. Reasonable accommodation – means any modification or adjustment to a job or the working environment that will allow an employee who fails or refuses to be vaccinated to remain in employment and incorporates the relevant portions of the Code of Good Practice: Employment of People with Disabilities published in terms of the Employment Equity Act, 1999. This might include an adjustment that permits the employee to work offsite or at home or in isolation within the workplace such as an office or a warehouse or working outside of ordinary working hours. In instances of limited contact with others in the workplace, it might include a requirement that the employee wears an N95 mask. If an employer cannot reasonably accommodate an employee who refuses or fails to be vaccinated, an employer may only fairly dismiss the employee if it can establish that it is on grounds of operational requirements in compliance with section 189 of the Labour Relations Act and the provisions of this Direction. A dismissal is unfair if the reason for the dismissal is that the employee refuses to be vaccinated in accordance with the plan contemplated above unless the dismissal is operationally required and the employee cannot be reasonably accommodated. Draft Compliance Map for COVID-19 Vaccination Checklist Compliance map - COVID-19 Vaccination Checklist Remember that you need to complete all these actions Prepare a risk assessment template per Area to be assessed. You will also need a list of all employees per Area indicating those who are over 60, those with comorbidities, those who use public transport and those who live on the premises in workplace accommodation. Conduct the in-loco inspection (preferably with the OHS representative and thereafter complete the Risk Assessment Area matrix by answering draft questions relating to sources of hazard (increased risk for exposure to COVID-19) / controls to be considered Make a preliminary observation as to whether mandatory COVID-19 vaccination should be applied to the entire Area, part thereof, all employees or specific employees. Draft a proposed COVID-19 mandatory or voluntary vaccination policy and plan and ensure that you have covered all the "Employer Support to Employees" areas identified. Consult with a representative trade union. Consult with the OHS committee or if no committee exists with the OHS representative. Make a final call on whether the COVID-19 vaccinations should be mandatory or voluntary by incorporating feedback from the consultations with the parties referred to in points 5 and 6 above. Notify employees of the outcome and then specifically engage with the identified employees for mandatory vaccinations and advise them of the findings and that they have the right not to be vaccinated on the three grounds identified and that they can make representations in that regard to HR or the employer. Deal with any objections/ applications for exemption by offering the employee(s) an opportunity to consult with the union representative if applicable, the OHS representative or consider possible medical evaluation for cases with alleged medical predispositions with the vaccinations. Support employees by, inter alia, assisting them to register on the EVDS and enabling them to get vaccinated via paid time off and the like. Deal with the employees who applied for exemption by looking at reasonable accommodation and ultimately if there are no alternatives, dismissal for operational requirements. For record purposes, the EOHCB wishes to express our support and advocacy for vaccinations in workplaces. Due to the nature of our industry and the risk of exposure to COVID-19, vaccination against COVID-19 is of utmost importance, not only to protect public health imperatives, but to improve and sustain economic recovery and growth within our industry. - Styles: Persephone by Shelley Lane, UK
Influenced by Greek mythology, the collection Persephone is an exciting fusion of daring textures, ethereal hues and sensual flowers that represent the fearless and feminine spirit of the Queen Goddess of the underworld, also known as the Goddess of Spring. Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is the goddess of spring and summer as well as the Queen of the underworld as a result of her relationship with Hades, by whom she was kidnapped. It is one of the most popular myths that try to respond to the natural processes of the climate cycle with the descent and return of the goddess causing the change of season. The collection manifests the contrast between femininity, sensuality, the indestructible power and strength of a regenerating goddess of life and at the same time queen of the underworld. An expression that is transferred to hair in the shape of a flower bed from which antlers emerge. A combination of wire and hair has been used for each piece. The avant-garde technique stands with shapes, textures and volumes, the use of various braids, layers, curls and a smooth lob with feathered ends. It is a minimalist costume expression that includes floral motifs, rose petals to provide sensuality, colour and freshness in contrast to the skin tone, and crystals that try to express the strength and regenerative power of divinity.
