- Styles: Pili-Pala by Shelley Lane, UK
Observing nature produces fascination and even emotion. This collection is inspired by the agitated but always delicate flight of butterflies over flowers. This is where the name comes from. "Pili-pala" means butterfly in Welsh. These are present in the images, sharing their magic with them. To shape these butterflies, hairdresser Shelley Lane created a bead with natural hair and Milkshake products. Regarding the looks, they present a strong structure, although with a delicate finish that provides a feeling of freedom of movement. - Gary Rom Hairdressing – Join the Team That's Committed to Your Education and Success
Gary Rom Hairdressing – Dedication and Success For Over 30 Years Gary Rom Hairdressing has been in existence in South Africa since 1988. In the early days, the salon group was called Inter Hair Design, and traded out of 2 branches in Pretoria. I decided to re-brand the name to Gary Rom Hairdressing in 2003, with the simple reason being that all great hair brands worldwide carry the name of the owner. I have been blessed and fortunate in my career to have the honour of training both nationally in South Africa, having trained more than 1000 salon professionals in more than 100 salons countrywide, and also internationally to more than 7000 salon professionals in more than 40 countries around the world. I have many highlights in my career, but two that stand out are: Winning the Global Salon Business award in 2003 for Salon Leadership, the award was handed to me in Los Angeles – a proud moment as more than 70 countries took part, over 1000 entries, and one winner. Assisting L’Oréal Professional to launch Kérastase into India, the second most populated nation on earth, pioneering the way for salon professionals to understand retail and at the same time profit from a leading luxury retail brand, making a difference to the quality of the lives of these salon professionals, and their families. The Gary Rom Hairdressing Focus – Education These highlights are the result of an unwavering dedication to education. A structured and process driven approach is critical to the salon industry, ensuring along the way that service delivery from salon professionals that choose to work in the company is of the highest standard. This level of consultation and client approach ensure that hairstylists who work for the Gary Rom brand live better lives, earning an income that is equal to, or greater than that of top salon professionals worldwide. I have focused my career on education, understanding early on in my life that there is no end to education, that the quest for knowledge is key, and that passing on this knowledge to my teams will prepare them to become salon owners and market leaders in their own right. Apprentices are Our Future The emphasis on education in the brand starts with apprentices, these people are as important to me as top stylists. Apprentices are our future - many have gone on to open multiple franchises in the brand, their careers spanning more than 14 years in the process. Barbers and stylists are educated to understand the finer details of client service, advanced skills training and client approach being the order of the day. Join the Gary Rom Team and Build Your Own Future With 21 salons and barber shops countrywide, and further plans in the next 7 months to add an additional 7 stores to the portfolio, we are looking for industry professionals to join this brand. My promise to those that are interested is that we will throw the full weight of the brand behind your education, enabling you to become the very best version of yourself along the way. If you are a barber, an apprentice or a stylist that has the desire to achieve your full potential in this great industry, mail your CV to gary@garyrom.co.za.

- Spring/Summer 2022 Trend Predictions from Thomas Hill, Director of TH1 Hair
Thomas Hill, Director of TH1 Hair, Predicts the Hottest Hues and Hairstyle Trends for Springs/Summer 2022. REBEL YELL At TH1 Hair we’ve had a huge influx of clients rebelling against playing things safe when it comes to their hair, which I believe is a reaction to the confines and restrictions of the last two years. With this in mind, I believe the forthcoming season will be the perfect blank canvas for those looking to stand out from the crowd. Unafraid and unapologetic, rebel cuts will take many forms, in both cut and colour, but I think we’ll see clients looking to add a bit of ‘wow’ factor and look at me appeal to low fuss, low maintenance buzz cuts (which were seen across the S/S22 runways at shows including Chanel Couture and Alexander McQueen). Case in point? Shaved hair with a pop of added colour interest and daring dye designs. Think a burst of colour placement, as pictured in my Craft collection (left) or a flash of bold detail, as seen in my Indistinguishable collection (right). These both set the sartorial tone for the forthcoming season and are perfect ways to help those clients looking for that little bit ‘extra’. CURVE APPEAL The Octopus trend has really been gaining legs recently (no pun intended…) and is a trend I see as being a huge hair hit this spring/summer 2022. Named as such because the silhouette rounds with the head shape (similar to an octopus’s body) with the base length resembling the legs, Pinterest declared it the haircut that will be ‘one of the most requested styles at the salon by Gen Z in 2022’ so it’s one to perfect to ensure you’re one step ahead. Seen with a 70s twist at shows including Ulla Johnson this season, what I love about this style is that while it bears similar characteristics to the shag haircut (albeit with a little more length), it also boasts a blend of layers (both long and short) and texture within its slightly longer silhouette. This is something I’m a huge fan of, and it’s a look I created in this image (left) as well as in my Indistinguishable collection (right). The best bit about this style is that it can be created on any hair type, from straight to wavy, and I love the curved finish it creates. This isn’t a look for time-poor clients, however; it’s not a low maintenance style. It requires volume at the roots and a rounded shape to the mid-sections, so advise your clients on how best to perfect it at home with a volume spray to help maximise the root area and a medium round brush for the perfect blow-dry. Advise on a shine spray to finish for some summer- and sea-inspired style. YOU GO CURL! This season I predict a return to natural-born texture with big curls taking centre stage once more. Big hair reigned supreme on the seasonal S/S22 shows, most notably at Fendi, Hermes and Lacoste, showcasing wonderfully wild curls with a rock ’n roll finish (as pictured in my About a Girl collection, right, and my Indistinguishable collection, left. The definition is key, which can be achieved with the right cocktail of products to ignite some lioness-inspired volume and effortless, stand-out style, but it’s also important to keep locks in shape: curls should look effortless and natural but require the right cut, and canvas, as a starting point. The beauty of this trend is that styling is a breeze: advise clients to twist a curl-defining cream into damp locks to prevent frizz and add some definition, either air drying or using a diffuser for some volume and texture; a roaring success on every level! PERI NICE! Very Peri (17-3938) – PANTONE’s colour for 2022 – is a shade I can really get on board with, its ‘back to the fuchsia’ appeal boasting carefree confidence for the new possibilities the forthcoming season offers. Blue isn’t a hair colour for the faint-hearted, but it can be used as light or as dark as you dare, for some serious ‘out with the old and in with the blue’ appeal. it’s very soft and wearable, and after such extended periods of isolation for many, I predict that experimentation with hair colour will be huge this forthcoming season, with Very Peri helping clients find newfound confidence. Nose grazing pastel wigs illustrated this trend perfectly at Loewe’s S/S22 show, and its versatility is found in both darker and lighter tones. Brunettes will look bolder with Very Peri highlights, or bolder colour placement (as pictured in my Wink collection, right), and if clients have been embracing their natural greys, this tantalising tone will help to add some ‘wow’ factor to their colour, as pictured in my Wink collection (right). I also adore a very pale aqua blue and I’m a huge fan of hair imitating art: think hair colour painted in Cubism-inspired abstract sections to create illusional locks. Using hair as if it were a canvas, the end result can be remarkably subtle, serving to enhance the natural shine, every time.
- National Bargaining Council Registration Not Optional
To join or not to join the Bargaining Council? This is a point that comes up frequently in discussions on salon management and compliance and there seems to be a wide variety of opinions with some possible misinformation being circulated. The Bargaining Council has provided some very good information below on the ins and outs and legalities of registration with the Council. If you are an employer, salon owner, legal owner, rent-a-chair or employee in this industry, this is important material relevant to you. COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT: REGISTRATION OF AN ESTABLISHMENT AND REGISTRATION OF EMPLOYEES The Council is continuing to receive feedback that indicates that some Employers and Employees believe that registration with the Council is voluntary or optional. The following points are provided to assist in this regard: In terms of the Main Collective Agreement, prior to the commencement of the rendering of Cosmetology Services at an Establishment, every Employer or the Legal Owner of an Establishment must apply to the Council in the form specified in Annexure “A” for registration of the Establishment and shall, as part of the registration process, also submit a duly completed Annexure “B” in respect of all Employees employed at the Establishment. (Annexures A and B may be downloaded from the Council’s website www.hcsbc.co.za. Alternatively, kindly contact your Agent or Council Offices). The failure by an Employer to pay over Pension Fund contributions, deducted from Employees, to the Pension Fund, is a criminal offence.
