The Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty, and Skincare Industry (HBSI) Pension Fund is not just a legal requirement—it’s a business obligation with serious consequences if ignored. Employers are at the centre of making sure their employees’ futures are protected, and compliance with the Pension Funds Act is non-negotiable. Your Legal Responsibilities as an Employer By law, every employee between the ages of 15 and 60 in this industry must be part of the fund. Employers are required to: Deduct the employee’s contribution (6% of salary, 6.5% in KwaZulu-Natal). Match this contribution with an equal employer payment. Pay both contributions into the fund within 7 days of deducting from salaries. Failure to comply with Section 13A of the Pension Funds Act is a criminal offense. Company directors and owners can face personal liability, and the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) publicly lists defaulting employers. Why Compliance Matters for Employers Legal protection: Paying contributions on time keeps your business safe from fines, prosecution, and reputational damage. Employee trust: Staff rely on these savings for their retirement, as well as benefits like funeral cover, disability, and critical illness payouts. Industry stability: Over R7 billion is currently owed in unpaid pension contributions across South Africa. Staying compliant helps prevent the industry from falling into the same trap. The Risks of Non-Payment Directors may be held personally liable for arrears. Employees may lose out on essential benefits like funeral cover, maternity protection, or disability income. Your business risks being named and shamed by the FSCA, damaging its credibility. Legal proceedings and financial penalties can threaten the sustainability of your business. Best Practices for Employers To stay compliant and protect your business: Deduct and pay contributions by the 7th of the following month. Keep accurate payment records. Provide transparent communication to employees about their fund status. Monitor compliance regularly to avoid arrears. Section 14 Transfers If an employee’s funds be transferred from any other fund to the HBSI Pension Fund this process is called a Section 14 Transfer. Should the employee lodge a claim while the transfer is still in progress, the employee would claim from both the “old” fund as well as the HBSI Pension Fund if they already contributed towards the fund. When we think of strong cuts, we usually imagine something harsh rather than beautiful, but one doesn’t have to come at the expense of the other. For Akin Konizi, international creative director of HOB Academy and leader of the British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year, the real skill lies in achieving both at once. “A great haircut should make a statement, but it should also flatter the client,” he says. Akin shares his top five tips for creating cuts that are both bold and beautiful. 1 Start with architecture A strong haircut is built, not styled. Before you think about softness or finish, you need a solid internal structure. This means understanding head shape, bone structure and natural fall. If the architecture is right, the beauty comes naturally. I believe that decoration without structure is temporary; you must design the cut from the inside out. 2 Respect the hair’s natural behaviour Strength doesn’t come from forcing the hair to do what you want it to do, it comes from working with what’s already there. Allow your cutting to be guided by natural growth patterns, density, texture and movement. The most beautiful cuts are the ones that look styled even when the client does nothing with it. 3 Precision creates softness There’s a misconception that precision cutting leads to harsh results but it’s the opposite. Clean, accurate lines allow you to control weight and balance, which is what creates softness. A casual approach to cutting creates accidental texture while precision cutting creates purposeful movement; it’s about creating a look that is refined rather than severe. 4 Balance strength with movement A strong cut needs to be balanced with elements of fluidity. Whether it’s subtle graduation, invisible layering or carefully placed softness around the face, these details stop a cut from feeling static. 5 The finish should support the cut If a haircut only looks good after heavy styling, it isn’t truly strong. A great cut should reveal itself in the finish, not rely on it. I always check my work with minimal product or styling. If the shape holds, the balance feels right and the hair still looks beautiful without effort, then the cut has done its job.

By Jim Shaw This season, rigid styles are being replaced with messy textured layers, adding some natural movement to the hair for that effortless cool ‘lived in’ effect you see celebrities embracing. These cuts allow you to add some individuality to your client’s look no matter their lifestyle. Soft Mullet The soft mullet, also frequently known as the modern mullet is a perfect shorter alternative for a modern, edgy twist on the retro 80’s classic. It’s a wearable everyday style that is designed to grow out naturally, while the hair remains long in the back, the sides are often tapered or faded so the sides are shorter to frame the face. By using choppy layers, you can add volume and texture to the bulk of the hair. This style is cool, effortless and most importantly low maintenance. Short Mod Cut The short mod cut is defined by its root volume, textured fringe and tailored sides, achieving a modern undone look through choppy lived-in layering that is kept long around the ears. Using texture makes the look much more relaxed and avoids a blocky, flat silhouette. This style is perfect for those looking for an option that allows for some individuality with a low-maintenance hair routine; all the cut needs is a bit of sea salt spray or matte clay to enhance the hair's natural movement. Messy French Crop The messy French crop is a relaxed version of the traditional French crop, keeping the same structure of a slightly longer top with shorter tapered sides. The messy element comes from incorporating texture through choppy, uneven layers to the crown, which naturally adds dimension to the hair. This style is perfect for the unpredictable nature of autumn as it mimics the winds natural movement of the hair. Messy Curtains With soft layers and a balanced middle part, messy curtains are achieved as the hair falls around the forehead. This style is perfect for those looking to add a nostalgic feel to their cut. Styling can be achieved by applying a mousse or sea salt spray and blow-drying the hair with a middle part, finishing with a texturising powder or clay for some movement throughout the curtains.

Birds is the evocative new collection from nine-time-consecutive New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year Danny Pato MNZM, photographed by long-time collaborator Mara Sommer. For Pato, the conceptual shoot is a symbolic celebration for the part birds play in his creative world. “Birds grace our skies and treetops with their extraordinary beauty, filling the air with their songs and warnings,” explains Pato. “Since ancient times, humans have literally and figuratively imitated birds to express qualities of identity: beauty, power, grace, fear and tenderness. “I have used some of these qualities as metaphors for birds and humans sharing the same world”. The collection forms part of Pato’s entry for New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year at the 2026 Australian Hair Fashion Awards. Pato is no stranger to recognition, recently becoming the first person outside of Europe to win the AIPP Grand Trophy in twenty years, and becoming the first ever hairdresser invested into the New Zealand Order of Merit.
