Heroine is the new collection from six-time-consecutive New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year Danny Pato, photographed by long-time collaborator Mara Sommer. The creative concept behind the colourful shoot came from iconic heroines from across pop culture - manga, video games, comic books and super hero films. “Heroine is a celebration and exaggeration of the queen, the goddess and the warrior”, said Pato. Hair was inspired by bursts of colour powders and by the ink-in-water artwork of Alberto Seveso. A variety of hair textures are celebrated, with theatrical colours expressing the boldness of each character. Classic hair forms are exaggerated – mermaid waves, the flat top, the shag and the bob are given a super-expression. The collection forms part of Danny’s finalist entry for New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year 2023 at the “holy grail” awards platform for ANZ, the Australian Hair Industry Creative Awards. One can spend a fortune on team building, weekends away, coaching sessions - only to have it all fall apart when someone leaves or goes 'off the rails' at work. This is often because staff bring their personal issues into the business, and when they do, the karma in the salon suffers. This can lead to problems often resulting in the loss of good staff members. And yet it’s not difficult to build a team to ensure the continued success of your business. The single most important thing is to have a value system, often referred to as a mission statement. These are the values that together make up your 'salon culture'. These values normally include respect, love, discipline, punctuality, and professionalism, but often include many more. These are the 'rules of conduct' that staff must adopt once they are in the salon. To put it simply, tell your staff there’s a hook outside the salon where they must hang all their personal issues before entering the salon. This really does help create an overall positive work atmosphere. Respect everybody's rights. Everybody has the right to be happy and successful as well as having their own opinion on things. But NOBODY has the right to stop somebody else from having the same rights. This often means not speaking about sensitive issues such as religion or race in the workplace. Collective people power. If one does a calculation of each team member's experience in the industry you might be surprised to find anything between 40 and 100 years collective experience. That is very powerful when the team is focused on creating the 'perfect salon experience' for each and every client. Collective pride and dignity. Everybody's role is important - reception, operator, apprentice, stylist, owner, are all on the same team when it comes to giving the client the ultimate salon experience. The best analogy that describes teamwork is to imagine your team as an orchestra. Why it's good to fight “with” your staff. That sounds like something you should try to avoid at all costs and, in a toxic environment where staff and management are, at worst, sworn enemies or, at best, on opposite teams, I suggest you do exactly that. However... Successful businesses are made up of staff and management all fighting on the same side for the same thing - to be successful. It is inconceivable that the salon is successful, but the staff are not contributing to that success. The problem is that staff don't always receive feedback on the things they do well. In fact, most feedback tends to be negative. A natural result of performance reviews is helping staff to set growth targets.
