  • Business Blog 2 August 2023: How to Sell Your Expertise

The definition of an expert is “someone to whom other people go to for advice on problems, needs and desires”. When I first heard this at a seminar on creating success, I thought that this exactly describes stylists and therapists who spend years studying to gain the skills, knowledge and experience all for the single purpose of giving their clients the best hair and skin they can have. They are selling an intangible thing called well-being. I then wondered why stylists and therapists do not earn the kind of money that recognised experts in other fields do. The most overwhelming reason is that stylists and therapists do not see themselves as experts in their fields and are not focused on selling solutions to their clients. Consequently, they are not seen as experts by their clients. To be successful one has to learn to become an expert in three main areas – Art, Science and Well-Being Creativity (Art): Much of the work we do involves working with physical form – hair-types, length, volume, skin types, face shapes, fashion, suitability, manageability and most importantly, the client’s image. Stylists can be likened to picture framers. A mediocre picture in a really good frame is so much more appealing than a good picture in a bad frame. This creative aspect of our work is individualised for each client so don’t forget to tell them so! Science: This is where our work becomes interesting and also where it is extremely important that clients understand that their hair and skin are being continually traumatised by pollution, the sun and wind, seawater and swimming pool water, hairdryers and styling irons and of course, shampoos, cosmetic coloration, perming and relaxing – the list is endless. Like the pharmaceutical industry, product suppliers spend a lot of time and money to give the salon industry products that help us be creative in our work whilst offering protection for the hair as well as the ability to restore the integrity of damaged hair. Educating clients about the science behind your work will make them recognise your expertise. And if this is not enough, remind them that many of the chemicals we work with on a daily basis are actually banned from aeroplanes! Hospitality (Well-being): We all know how nice it is to go to a five-star hotel or restaurant or to fly first class. It’s just something about the way you are treated that makes you feel so important. If you want your clients to come back again and again and to spread the word about your business, make sure it includes the level of hospitality and not just about a good haircut. This area of expertise requires consistency to be really effective. Be sure it is a main focus of your salon’s success culture. – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za

Service revenue per site up on average from last year but down slightly from last month Retail revenue per site down on average from last year and from last month The downward trend in total revenues and client visits does appear to be seasonal based on previous years trends but this year has probably been compounded by some external factors like the continuing loadshedding, inflation and interest rate hikes and bad weather to name a few. So the goal will be to see the winter through and work hard to ensure that spring and summer make a good recovery. Want more Personalized Business Information? • Business Blog 31 July: Successfully Responding to Change

There are only two natural fears in life - the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All other fears are a result of having learned to fear them either through education or by personal experience. For businesses, by far the most threatening is the fear of change. This is because change is constant - in fact, change is the only thing in life that’s guaranteed. So the question is not ‘are things changing?’ but rather ‘how do we respond to change?’ Understanding the Serenity Prayer helps. 'God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.' The opposite of courage is fear and in the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the U.S.A., ‘...the only thing we have to fear is... fear itself.’ What Will it Take to Make a Change? I remember the story of a man walking past a house veranda on which sat a man and lying in front of him was a dog. It was obvious that the dog wasn’t happy as it kept whining and making unhappy noises. When asked what was wrong with the dog the man replied that the dog was lying on a nail. I said, surely that must hurt, so why doesn’t the dog move. And he replied that it wasn’t hurting bad enough YET to make him move! Unfortunately, a lot of us are like that. We know there are problems in our business or that some things could be done better but, because of the fear of change, a fear of failing, a fear of moving away from our comfort zone, we just ‘don’t get off the nail’. We think that moaning and complaining about it is actually doing something- helloooo! It is the definition of insanity to believe that you can do the same thing over again and get a different result. Change: A Matter of Making Good Better However, philosophy aside, change for the sake of change can be both confusing for people and could ultimately damage your business. The motivation for change should always be in order 'to make good, better'. And the opportunities for change are abundant. All you have to know/think/believe is that making a change is going to 'make good, better'. The more detailed information you have about your business the easier it is to identify areas that need changing. Re-Invention: Facing the Challenge of Change Successfully In a previous blog we discussed the necessity to periodically 're-invent' yourself, something you will not be able to if you suffer from the fear of change. As a salon software/business solutions provider we are often confronted by prospects who are frightened of change - whether it is to go from a paper system to digital, or to upgrade from their existing salon system to one that will 'make their successful business, better', it is the fear of change that provides the greatest challenge. At MySalon Software we recognise that fear-of-change, which is why we invite salons wanting to change the way they run their businesses to 'try-before-you-buy'. After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And fortune always favours the bold! – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za
